    1. It would get recognized more if it had something in the title to draw our attention to it. Great idea though.

  1. I like the idea of this. Imagine getting a commision done from a more reputable artist, in the style of banned covers.

    1. Though for $30, I would happily sell homage covers. I think I got a blank Adventure Time, i think that would be hilarious…

  2. hes a real cool artist ,Im doing a exclusive interview for CHU with him that should be done soon

  3. Love how whenever there’s controversy over something like this, the outrage actually makes the work of art more famous, talked about (and now paid homage to) than if it just was left alone.

  4. This along with the Jock cover would have been an instant $10 in the future.
Bleeding Cool interviewed Albuquerque and he said the cover was to be published on a comic aimed at female teenage audience and therefore he pulled it…but I can’t help but wonder how big the uptick in female readership Batgirl is actually getting…and whether or not the previously existing readers dropped the book once they found out it wasn’t aimed at them any longer with the new creators coming on board. However, I do believe his statement saying that he has always defended minorities is a better argument for his decision.
I have been reading the new Batgirl and enjoying it and I am not a teenage girl…and guess what..I also liked this cover as a throwback to another awesome Batman story where a female was tortured by a psychotic killer. I do not believe the point of that story was to glorify torturing or rape, but to show how twisted this mythical villain is and how Batman perhaps is a reflection of this in his quest to rid the world of crime.
The cool thing about stories is they keep going though and somewhere a creator decided that Batgirl would become Oracle in spite of her limitations or what she had been through. When some people found out that the new 52 was doing away with the Oracle they shouted out against it. What about the minorities that are disabled and dug Oracle as one of the only disabled heroes in comics. I am sure that some readers did not read the new Batgirl when DC made the decision to have Barbara come out of the wheelchair. That is the point though…we can stop reading whenever we want and we can also construct our own continuity of what we consider to be cannon. I feel that true comic fans have all experienced this (Austen’s Uncanny X Men?) where we simply choose to ignore some idiotic story of our favorite characters based on our preferences (Sins Past?).
I guess ultimately what I am saying here is the frustration is that this was a cover and not a story going on in the book. It was not the only cover either. If you are a fan of the current Batgirl and wanted to carry on as if the other cover never existed you were free to do so.
The irony is that now that very cover is going to be copied and imitated and I am certain that as we read the outrage, illegal prints will be made and sold at some of the dodgier conventions around my area. I liked the cover because it was a piece of art that throws back to a previous story that I also liked.
    …end rant…

    1. Batgrrl only sold $40k copies, so it’s not like their target audience is huge. The big 2 used to cancel books constantly when sales were that low; I’m aware that Action Comics sold even less in Feb, just saying Baitgrrl doesn’t exactly have a massive following

      1. What was the print run on it before the change over to the new creative team and target audience?
I have a feeling that most of what is being deemed as this new audience is not entirely true and the demographic that actually buys the comic has hardly changed at all. It is all the same money being thrown around to different places.
Here is the way it works. The publisher says, “here is New Batgirl…now with lighthearted stories and less dark.” So orders go up because the retailer thinks this is a new direction and maybe the title will pick up a few readers. Here is the problem with this mentality though….say a book like Batgirl sold 30,000 copies before the changeover, and after the change it goes up to 40,000 and another 10,000 with the second print…does the publisher actually think that the previous 30,000 fans that were buying grim and gritty Batgirl all stopped buying? Do they think that the new 50,000 readers are all teenage girls aged 13-19?

  5. On top of all that…Purple Rain was a pretty sexual movie…that was rated ‘R’…and yet that cover is was fine…even though the supposed readership of Batgirl is all teenage girls who have probably never even seen Purple Rain…or know who Prince is.

  6. Funny and glad he did those! With the extra hype and attention it is too bad none of the proceeds are going to charity. Missed opportunity.

  7. The implied rape doesn’t really bother me. The smeared joker smile, which mirrors a smeared whore’s mouth, doesn’t bother me. What bothers me is that no one has coupled Dr. Light and Sue Dibney for a cover. Same goes for my other requests: The Comedian behind Silk Spectre, The Commander behind Apollo, Bueno Excellente behind Kyle Rayner and random shadowy male figures behind Damage.

    1. “The implied rape doesn’t really bother me” I don’t know why that made me laugh. I feel bad about it but still don’t regret it. I would say make that your catch phrase but I don’t think that would go over too well in the mainstream. doubt they would get it.

  8. For the record, in response to “ocguy72” and the “missed opportunity about the proceeds going to charity. I have given thousands of dollars to help others from my art as well as tons of personal time volunteering for various causes. But thanks for assuming what I do with my time and money.

  9. I’m heading to Vegas tonight. If I hit some games tomorrow morning I’m buying the Leia book. Love it.

  10. Definitely a trend. Lots of blank covers with similar drawings on facebook. Some are actually really good, others are eh.
