Variant Envy: Spider-Gwen #1 Gold Phantom Variant

Featuring an homage to Amazing Spider-man #300, Spider Gwen #1 Phantom variant was a hit. Now, they are going back to the well to release an Encore Edition of Spider-Gwen #1 Gold Phantom Variant

I did well selling the regular Phantoms, so I will be picking these up as well. Also will be submitting some, and one for myself to go with my set of Gwen #1 CBCS 9.8 regular and 9.8 Black and White. (can submit for others too if interested.)

I have seen some of the listings for the Gold Phantom they are all saying it is ultra-rare. Unsure if the phantom group would be required to do the cover at 3,000 copies or they can go less, which ever it is pretty sweet.

It is an Encore Edition, so I am guessing this is a variant for the second print of Spider-Gwen #1. The gold really pops on it and sets off Gwen and the logo. The book will ship April 3rd.

  1. I don’t know…It’s just another of the same cover with a different color. I’m new to Phantom variants but I hope this isn’t a trend. Taking the same cover and just adding a new tint to it over and over again.

  2. Yeah, at some point it’s like…where does it end??! You gotta make a stand at some point. Variants of variants of second printings?? “It’s gettin’ ri–god-damn-diculous.”.

    1. The industry needs to be smarter about where they’re headed with all these variants. Sure it a great time to be a seller – it’s like printing money right now. But they will eventually burn out collectors… of course leading to the inevitable market crash.

  3. Larry is going overboard with these ASM 300 swipes. Now a 2nd printing to the homage, which already had 2 versions??? Plus a 300 swipe for Silk and one other – can’t recall st the moment. That is just too much.

  4. I’m glad I’m not the only one who feels this way about the re-use of the same cover art over and over. What’s next a glow in the dark version like they did with some books the 90’s? I think I will opt out on this one as well.

    I prefer “homages”
I’d like to do EVERY character in the Marvel Universe in this design…
    Sorry.
The 90’s inner child in me demands it.
    The thing with variants.
If you don’t like them. Don’t buy them.
Life is too short to get upset…

    1. I don’t think anyone is upset. More frustrated. It is just the same thing with a different color. How about some new art instead of just a slight color change. As it stands this is just overkill. Remember, if those who are buying your product get frustrated with it, might be time to change things around to keep those paying customers happy.

      1. It is not uncommon for marvel to do a second or subsequent printing of a book with just a color variance. Especially on more popular covers just look at what they did for edge of spider verse. I like the gold personally so I’m a fan of it.

      Exactly..
I actually like it, but I’m still passing this round myself.. just taking a break from Gwen and her variants.
We are now what, on the 5th printing of EOSV #2 and only one cover so far drastically changed (3rd printing)? The others have been the same cover except the slight color..

  6. I’ve BEEN BUYING SECOND PRINTINGS FOR YEARS WITH “slight” color changes…
    This one is pretty drastic.
    AND relevant….
    It’s Gewn’s GOLDEN hair
    🙂

      1. I just wish they did the 1st prints of the Star Wars with the black backgrounds instead of the white backgrounds.. I had to buy the 2nd prints just because I think the black looks better.

  7. I buy a lot of variants. Now there’s a cool cover, and then there is beating a dead horse: repurposing a layout someone else created, for consecutive months. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. Mine is that after 2-3 of the same “homage” in a row (for different books) it demeans the purpose of an homage to simply capitalizing on the nostalgia. It’s good for business I’m sure, which is understandable. Sooner or later the ride will end – best wishes.

      1. But it works though.. there are a lot of people out there that *must have them all* so.. if someone can capitalize on easy money making.. all power to them then!

  8. Yeah I agree with Larry if you dont like it dont buy it. I myself like it and will get a copy for my PC. I used to be the guy that if it was a variant I had to have it. Spent a lot of $. Now a days, if the art looks good and the cover pops out and the price is right, I will get it. No more going CRAZY on variants lol
