Wednesday Open Forum

Wednesday
Wednesday, the best day of the week, new comic book day. It is like your birthday in the middle of each week (well, one where you buy your own presents.)
We open things up to hear from you. A free for all.

We will be starting another give away tonight so keep your eyes peeled for that.
What are your pick ups?
What about back issue raids?
What was sold out at your store?
What was sitting one the shelves in piles?
Or anything else you want to talk about, here is where to do it!

  1. For the first time, I pre-ordered a bunch of stuff from Midtown and it’s going to start coming in. Lots of Joker and Spidet-Gwen variants of the titles I read. It makes picking up books at the LCS difficult! I’m going to see if I can continue my string of luck picking up the Secret Wars variants for cover.

  6. I just have Rebels #3…..
I really wish I would have started buying Saga with the single issues. I’ve been picking it up in trade but it’s hard waiting for the next volume. Same thing with the Walking Dead.

      1. i started buying walking dead in single issues at 127, but then went back and bought used copies of tpb’s to get caught up. im keeping the single issues in my collection (it doesn’t bother me to not have the complete series because the series is so long) and i sold the tpb’s on ebay. you can actually make a nice flip by selling a lot of old walking dead tpb’s at once. i just really enjoy having single issues. with saga on the other hand, i actually made it my mission to collect all the issues (Regardless of print or condition), even though i only started reading it at the new arc. its a much more realistic goal than walking dead. the only tricky part is i told myself i wouldn’t spend more than $10 on a single issue (including shipping).

    1. I started reading Saga when issue #6 hit the stands but was lucky enough to find first prints starting at #2 still on the shelf. I had to buy a minty fresh #1 off eBay but it was worth it for the collection. I bought one of the Image Firsts #1 to read it to start off with.
As for Walking Dead.. slowly putting together a complete set. #1 is gonna be hard to come by (I already got most of the other key issues except #2 and #3 which are pricey just because they’re harder to come by) but my wife told me if I pay off my car by the end of the year by selling comics.. I can sell comics to save up to buy #1.. . yay!

      1. I’ve always had a rule that if I start out with the collected version I’ll stay that way. it’s just me being anal because I either want the individual collections in all single issues or all trades. The Walking Dead is too far along for me to realistically jump in now. I contemplated it with Saga but the cost of the early issues turned me off. So I’ll stick to the trades but I reserve the right to complain about it on occasion :).
Good luck Poyo! That’s one heck of a goal!

        1. Haha.. I had to do the same with Walking Dead as well though. I bought the TPB and then started picking up the monthly issues. I jumped on board around issue #100 and the Walking Dead is what got me back into comic books.
Yeah, I have a ways to go but I’ll get there one day. I might even wait when the show ends (I hope it doesn’t anytime soon) and we’ll see drops in prices for some of the comics as demand loosens a bit on the issues.

      2. The Walking Dead was the first “comic” (really it was the trade) I bought also. I went to the comic store one day looking for something along the lines of tales from the crypt and the walking dead trade is the what the clerk sold me. This was sometime right before or right after the 2nd trade was released.
Some of the prices for that first issue are insane. I remember a highly graded copy sold for 10K a couple of years ago. It would definitely be a cool add to your collection.

        1. I think that was one of the few CGC 10.0 that sold for 10k.. that would be an awesome comic to own… I just wouldn’t pay that much for it though.

      3. I looked it up the other day, I think the print run was only around 7K I think for the first issue and it dropped a couple of K after that. I wish I would have been in to buying single issues back then.

        1. Yup, #1 was a 7,266 print run. #2 dropped to 6,067 print run. #3 was 6,992 and was where it started to go back up as #4 was 7,019 total print run.

  7. Both MRS. DEADPOOL/ HOWLING COMMANDOS #1 1:25 variants at cover and thought it was a good story. Looking at the rest of the Marvel shelf It’s almost like they’re publishing all the odd offbeat concepts and story ideas they’ve accumulated in their vault through the Secret Wars Battleworld stuff and getting it out of their system for what will presumeably be a more coherent continuity after the reboot. I’m hoping there will be some more gems like this in the weeks ahead and I’m hoping to pick them up from dollar bins in a few months – I’m looking at you Marvel Zombies stuff. TANK GIRL #1 1:10 and will be buying ongoing, happy to see it back. There were 5 copies of TITAN #1 and I bought 2 – definitely worth reading if you’re into very “indie” books. I bought 2 copies of my LCS’s logo branded DISCIPLES #1. It has the electric chair cover and the story was great. I saw no copies of WE CAN NEVER GO HOME #3 or IT WILL ALL HURT #1 anywhere today so if they were released I guess I’m going online for those.
Huge stacks of STARVE #1, BATMAN #41, and STARFIRE #1.

      1. Only one shop of the 3 I visited had them and had very few, around 3 of each cover. I wasn’t even going to pick these up but when I skimmed the book, the art looked really good.

  8. This week confused me because I walked in expecting to only pick up a small stack this week and ended up back at my usual number lol.
    Disciples #1
Squirrel Girl #1-4 3rd and 2nd prints (EATS NUTS KICKS BUTTS variant)
    Detective #41
    Batman #41

    Saga #29
    Walking Dead

    Chrononauts #4
    Harley Quinn #17
    Constantine Hellblazer #1
    Big Con Job #4
    Zombies vs. Robots #6
Starfire #1 RI flew off the rack and is beyond double the price on eBay. If you see any in the wild I suggest you capture it Steve Irwin style.

    1. Sorry, that’s supposed to be Ichabod Azrael #4…also picked up a We Can Never Go Home #3. Literall the only one on the shelf.

      1. I am loving Ichabod Azrael.. I didn’t think I was going to like it as much as I do but I think it’s one of the more underrated comics right now.

      2. And yes, We Can Never Go Home #3.. one shop had 4, another had none and the one other had just 1 copy left that I snagged. It’s sold out everyone online as well from what I’ve checked.

      3. Yeah I’m not sure if it was because of print run or demand but that one copy I found was at 8:45 in the morning so I don’t know how many people could have gotten to it before me.
Agreed, Ichabod Azreal was a nice surprise read. I gave it s try the first issue and found myself picking up each consecutive one to follow the story.
Have you gotten into Curb Stomp?

      4. I haven’t checked out Curb Stomp, I think at the time the description just didn’t appeal to me much.

  9. Batman #41
    Birthright #8
    Black Science #15
Captain Marvel and The Carol Corps #1 (candidate for worst title name ever?) – action figure cover
    Constantine #1
    Descender #4
    Disciples #1
    Harrow County #2
    Injection #2
    Lantern City #2
    Rachel Rising #34

    Saga #29
    Silk #5
    Spider-Gwen #5

    Blubber #1
    It Will All Hurt #1
    Titan #1
    Metallic Silence #1
We Can Never Go Home #3

  11. Hey Poyo one of my local comic stores has a walking dead #1 9.8 CGC for $2500. So you’ll defenetly get it by next year if it’s still available.

    1. Nice.. that’s not bad either. Most 9.8 go easily for around 3k. I’ve bought all mine raw so far but the #1 I’m probably gonna go graded for sure when I do.

  12. Star fire 1:25 variant 4x
We can never go home #3 5x
    Disciples #1 8x
    Walking dead
    Captain marvel action figure variant
Howard the duck #2 black and white run the jewels variant 4x

  13. The only book I really enjoyed this week was The Disciples #1. I’m thinking of that I need to pick up some variants before the show comes along.

  14. We can never go home #3 x4
    Disciples #1 x3
    Disciples #1 BAM Variant x3
    Batman #41 x3
    Batman #41 Joker Variant x3
