The Boys coming to Cinemax

Deadline is reporting that Garth Ennis’ “The Boys” is coming to Cinemax.
Copies of The Boys #1 started selling off quickly following the announcement. Recent sales following the announcement have the book going for $30-$45.
The rest of the books in the series are fairly cheap. This has long been a fan favorite book, and may be somewhat difficult to find in the wild.

From Deadline:

After bringing Garth Ennis’ Preacher to the screen with the upcoming AMC series, Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg and Neal Moritz are tackling another dark and violent comic book by Ennis on cable television. Cinemax has put in development The Boys, from the Preacher team of Rogen and Goldberg’s Point Grey, Moritz’s Original Film and Sony TV.
Developed by Rogen, Goldberg and Supernatural creator Eric Kripke, and to be written by Kripke based on the graphic novel written by Ennis and illustrated by Darick Robertson, the series is set in a time where most of the superheroes are corrupted by their celebrity status and often engage in reckless behavior, compromising the safety of the world. It centers on a CIA squad, known informally as “the boys,” whose job is to keep watch on the proliferation of superheroes and, if necessary, eliminate some of them. Rogen and Goldberg, who helmed the Preacher pilot, are set to direct.

  1. This is great news for some reason a couple of months ago I started buying up back issues of this, and know I’m just a couple of issues away from a complete run. I don’t think that any other channel besides Cinemax could do this show, too bad I don’t have that channel. Mycomicshop.com and Midtown still have a lot of these available, including a Herogasm set signed by Ennis.

  2. Cinemax ewwww they still exist. That means all the networks, A&E, CW, Netflix, HBO, Showtime, and everyone else must of passed on this.

  3. Cinemax is owned by HBO. Robert Kirkman’s Outcast, as well as the critically-acclaimed series The Knick and Banshee, are Cinemax originals. In 2011, HBO/Warner Bros. refocused Cinemax to develop action-oriented original mainstream series aimed at males ages 18–49. I love this site because it’s readers frown on negativity based on ignorance.

  4. Oh yeah I read that same article on collider Cinemax this and that Knick, Banshee, Outcast niche program for males. Does that mean I have to praise HBO’s inbred sister cousin Cinemax because Robert Kirkman has a show on that channel that hasn’t even premiered yet. I hope Outcast does well when it comes out but meanwhile ill have to skip all that other great programming on Cinemax
Topless Prophet, Bad Girls Behind Bars, Hollywood Sexcapades #7 Pajama party, Sex Games Vegas for I have sinned, Femme Fatales 24 Hell Hath no Furies, and Snakes on a plane and that’s just tonight’s line up.

    1. That’s true, objective value judgements are best made along gender lines, and arguments based on something as subjective as taste are best made with ad hominem attacks. What’s worrying is that you’re willing to lambast Cinemax for retooling their focus to maintain their profitability, while holding CW, the last great bastion of the female focused teen drama up as a shinning example of “good” television. Taste is taste, and if we’re being fair to the less inbred cousin of Cinemax, HBO, they run plenty of softcore porn too. You don’t have to praise Cinemax, but I don’t think anyone is gonna label Heart of Dixie, Jane the Virgin, or The Vampire Diaries over at the CW high art. What’s more likely is they didn’t think a non-premium Cable channel would green light a project in which one of the main characters is seeking revenge for his wife’s rape by a Superman analogue. HBO would’ve been a good place to shop it, but then it could get Deadwooded/Romed etc. with a “cut the budget or you’re off the air” style edict.

  5. Cinemax, the channel that used to be thought of as a lesser-HBO with nighttime soft-core porn has of course morphed now into a near-equal to HBO…with nighttime soft-core porn. Seriously though, considering how raunchy, “The Boys,” could be that might help.
Also, Simon Pegg absolutely needs to be Hughie, even if I read an article where he mentioned feeling he might be, “Too old,” for the role. Hell, if we can CGI an entire jungle for that new, “Jungle Book,” movie I’m sure we can remove a few wrinkles from Pegg’s face.

      1. I think he wrote that Simon Pegg perfectly encapsulated the innocent yet tough look he was told to create. Everything else came off “looking old”

  6. There are some great shows on Cinemax! Banshee, Strike Back, I even enjoyed Femme Fatale! If the Boys is anywhere as good as the 1st 2 shows mentioned then Cinemax will have a definite hit!
