One to Watch: Uncanny Inhumans 11 Part 2

We ran a piece last week talking about Uncanny Inhumans #11, especially the 1:25 variant heating up. It is sold out at Diamond, will potentially catch retailers by surprise, and will most likely have a small-ish print run. Since then, the book has been on fire.
Recently closed show the regular cover selling at up to $16.
The Civil War Reenactment cover is selling for up to $18.
The 1:25 Putri Variant has two auctions with bids up to $79 currently.
This is the book to get this week.

  1. Last night, while watching auctions on the Putri variant, my straegy changed from “get the single copy my LCS is already holding for me” to “storm the doors of 2 other LCS and get on that train!”

    1. I am hoping this turns in to a “back the truck up” type money maker. I was sick yesterday and hit my local honey hole where I picked up 2 copies of Aleister Arcane #1, 4 copies of Superboy 19 New 52, and a copy of Kitchen 1. Paid $21 out the door and have already sold the Aleister Arcanes for a total of $76 (neither were 9.8’s). Also hit up a Movie Stop on Friday where I got a ton of Hastings variants for 70% off plus buy 3 get 2 free. I am well past my break even point on them. Trying to save up for Baltimore Comic Con and NYCC.

        1. a vf and a f copy I sold yesterday for $45 and $30 respectively. I have a bad cold and took off work to go to the doctors. My doctor is near my honey hole. I spent $21 yesterday and have already made back $75. That does not include my raid on Movie Stop Friday night where I got a ton of hastings variants at 70% off plus buy 3 get 2 free. It was a good picking weekend.

  2. Here are the print runs for Uncanny Inhumans #’s 1-8. Based on this, unless someone was tipped off early about the 1st appearance of Mosaic, Uncanny Inhumans #11 should be under 30k.
    #1 – 90,528
    #2 – 41,321
    #3 – 43,036
    #4 – 35,308
    #5 – 35,145
    #6 – 32,256
    #7 – 27,088
    #8 – 28,527

      1. Marvel has been hyping this character for awhile, I would think they would have a higher print run then 30k with all the PR they put out for Mosaic

  3. My shops usually never order enough of these to get the variants. So what the heck, I’m bidding, because I can. 🙂

  4. And to think that I seemed to have been criticized last week on here for mentioning that the 1:25 variant was the winner to get. I happened to have pre-ordered that one at $7.99 before all of this got crazy. I was just trying to give you guys the heads up as well.

    1. Well, the 1:25 variant will always fetch a nice price, if the character becomes popular, stays popular and demand is there. But in that case, it usually is out of people’s price range, sometimes from the start. Like now, pre-order secondary market are $80 and up. Shops might hike their prices as well to take advantage.
The long term real winner will still be the regular cover. Most shops will not hike the price as they’ll sell initially at cover. You can’t beat buying a comic at the $3.99 price tag and it turn around to be a $20 or more book.
If you think in terms of just dollars, the variant is still not the winner. If you think of %, the regular covers are still the winners.

    2. I guess another way to put it is say for example, you buy the Putri Variant at $50 and it becomes a $100 book. So you sell it, you make your $50 and yay, you made your money back + $50 profit. Sure you might of bought it for $7.99 originally but I’m talking in terms of once the shelves are cleared and we’re dealing directly with the secondary market.
Now, let’s say you bought 5 of the regular cover all at $3.99 each, cover price. They become a $20 book. That’s roughly 5 books for $20. If you could turn around and sell all 5 for $20 each, you just made $100 again, but this time netting $80 profit.
So you see, the variants might go for crazy money but the real winners are the regular covers that heat up to become $20 or more books. Even better if they become $30, $40 or $50 books.. (think Spider-Gwen first appearance). Sure it was nice landing that 1:25 variant but they dry up quick and they quickly become out of reach for most collectors. For flippers though, those that buy a few extra to sell so they can buy more comics.. the real winners are the books you know you can get at cover and then sell at mad profit prices after they’ve heated up.

      1. I think most of us pointed out that the regular covers will end up being the real winner. Not criticizing, just pointing out, at least that’s what I try to do.

  5. I have two of the regulars put aside for me at my LCS. Will probably sell one for a quick flip and sit on the other one and see where it goes.

      1. Yea, I’ll probably grab a 3rd for another quick flip if there are some left. I really l.ike these quick turnaround books, they help pay for the unhealthy amount of comics I buy :p

        1. Exactly. I think I pre-ordered 5 online, so I won’t have them for another few days after tomorrow but I know I’ll get one tomorrow, since Uncanny Inhumans is one of my pulls at one shop.

  6. Midtown changed to a limit 1 per cover and cancelled my previous order. Just got my cancellation notice.

    1. Strange, usually orders made before they change to 1 per customer are honored. I ordered 5 and haven’t gotten a cancel notification. When did you place your order?

    2. Midtown cancelled two of my orders and reduced a third to one copy of each cover even though my orders were in before the limit restriction was imposed. Gives me grief, but oh well…..now for the secondary market hunt for cheap/affordable copies!

      1. I am hearing this from so many friends now. People who put in orders well in advance of the blowup. Well in advance of the limit. Midtown may have pushed this one too far.

  7. I put my order in on 6/22 when they first came out. I just got my cancellation notice at 1:11 pm pacific time.

  8. Midtown. I am going to chat with them tomorrow since I got my cancellation notice after they closed today.

  9. I haven’t been able to flip anything. Even rebirth is not doing so well for me. Going to get 2 copies tomorrow to see if I can make a quick flip on them cuz I need to buy my boys some pokemon dvd lol.

  10. I preordered from someone on eBay. Just got a message From the seller. Showed me his cancellation notice from Midtown, so no set for me. Looks like I’m in line early in the am!!

  11. No cancellation yet from midtown…but then again maybe they cancelled only those ordering a ton of copies. I only ordered 7 each

  12. I spend $2,000 – $3,000+ a month at Midtown. They are now going to lose ALL of my business if I don’t get my orders filled.
I know what I’m about to say will get me a lot of crap from those who don’t speculate, but I had 100 basic covers, 50 of cover B and 5 of the 1:25 variants all locked up at Midtown. All were bought before they even went up for sale on Midtown website last Wednesday (they take care of me since I spend insane amounts of money) and before I started spreading the tip on this book.
Then about 10 days later, they cancel all of my books, change to limit one, and leave me with one of each cover.
If they don’t fill my order tomorrow, they will lose $25,000-35,000 a year of my money, and you can bet I have a few big time buyers that are also walking away from midtown after this.
If they are going to screw over those that spend more in a year than some people make, in order to make a few happy that are “late to the party”, well then let’s see if those few complainers bring midtown the type of money they are about to lose when me and a few others bail.

    1. If they are not going to fill orders of that size they have no business taking orders that large. Never know this could end up like Death of Splinter sold out and selling well on the 2nd market before its actual release then when released stacks on shelves and eBay flooded with so many copies with people undercutting back to the original cover price.

    2. I hear ya, Brother! I spend the same amount at Midtown per month (don’t tell the wife!). I used to have a Diamond account and was tired of receiving missing/damaged product every week. With Midtown, I receive what is ordered (except for now), the order is accounted for, and the comics are in great shape (for the most part).
My orders that were cancelled today consisted of two 25-copy orders of A&B covers which were placed before their limit restriction. A third order was reduced to only one copy of each cover.
I can foresee this going along the lines of the DC Rebirth 1st print issue where they indicated they were out-of-stock, received a 2nd and then a 3rd print of the issue, and all of a sudden they have stock of the first print again but now selling for a much higher price.
What can you do though! Midtown will still get my business because I can’t see anyone else to take it.

    3. Brian…It sounds like you order a lot… Have you ever thought of getting the proper business licenses so you can purchase through distributors the same as Midtown does? I know that opens the doors to new headaches but it may alleviate other at the same time.

      1. One actually receives the same (or better) discount pre-ordering from Midtown…..35-50%. Deliveries from Diamond were a nightmare for me, but I guess it all depends where you’re located and if you can physically pick up your product from each week opposed to UPS employees tossing boxes around, stepping on them, etc., before being delivered. Headache every single week I tell ya’!

    4. Exactly, and bottom line is that Midtown is a business that wants to accommodate as many customers as possible. That means allowing as many customers as possible to have a chance at ordering/pre-ordering any comic book title they want to each week. It doesn’t really mean they need to make sure people who want to flip on eBay can stockpile as many copies as they want.

      1. Wrong.
They limit at 25 per order. If a book is hot, or assumed to be, they put 1 per person limits in place. This book was order 25 per order all the way until 4pm est today. Then they went back and took books from paying customers to sell for an inflated price later.
Why do you think none were put back up on their site? They will hold them for a few weeks and then put them back on their site at a price that somewhat mirrors the secondary market price.
So the babies that complained about a book they now only want because it’s hot, didn’t actually help themselves, they wound up helping Midtown.
Next time buy a book you want, not complain after a sell out and then want a book only because it’s hot. Thise who do their homework and buy before others shouldn’t be penalized by those who only want in once something is already hot. That’s not how it works.

  13. Anyone figured out the trigger for Midtown cancelling orders…were they just going after the huge orders or did smaller ones get cut also.

  14. Looking like I won’t be able to get to my local shop tomorrow so I gave them a call. Since I have been going to them for over 15 years they were more than happy to hold a A $ B set for me. They were only getting in one copy of the 1 in 25 so that tells me they didn’t order a lot… Called another local place I don’t go to much and was told they aren’t even sure what they will charge for the standard covers, meaning they will hike the price right off the bat….Probably why I rarely go them . Looks like the hype for this guy will carry him a little ways at least! Here is to hoping that he is written well and doesn’t just fade away after a year or so.

  15. Just got back from 2 lcs…picked up 2 reg. cover at one shop, and 1 reg. cover 1 Civil War variant…they only had like 5 of reg cover on shelf upon opening store….has to be a very low print run. Hold or flip? HMMMMM…..

  16. my midtowns were cancelled during shipping…from 7 each cover to 1 each cover. Ordered them on June 22nd before they were reduced to 1 per order. Bad form Midtown.

  17. The cancellations may be a blessing in disguise cause the bey is so over fluded that copies are not moving at all compared to some pre-sale prices.

  18. Back in Feburary, I wrote a list down of all the Inhumans and started chasing their 1st appearances, so it was a no brainer for me to start chasing this comic variant two weeks ago, alas I could not prepay it anywhere like they normally allow me to do. I visited 4 stores this morning and no one got it. I also heard from 3 of store owners that the short shipments caused their best pull list buyer to cancel their pull box from their store because of this. Sad. Real sad. I did get two regular copies, one which was the store copy so it will be my reader, the other, sent away for grading. Oh well, such is life.
