Agent Poyo’s Picks of the Week for July 20th, 2016

As I’m writing this, it is day 4 with the wife out of town and I have not eaten my kids yet being left totally in charge of the little monkey’s. We survived a day trip to the beach where we caught zero fish but I managed to burn my back due to crappy sunblock. As Wednesday approaches, I’m still ticked on my last Midtown order that came damaged, all 20 comics. Okay, one survived major damage where I’m keeping it but the rest are being sent back for replacements and a few were out of stock so I just get my money back. Surprisingly customer service put up zero hassle unlike Anthony’s luck with his Comic Con box.
So enough of my ramblings, let’s get on with the picks, the Poyo Picks, the only picks you should be reading.. forget about those guys Mel and Anthony with their picks, I know what I’m talking about.. at least 2% of the time, maybe…. at least I think.

DC/Vertigo Pick:
Justice League #1 (DC) – A new volume after the Rebirth event. Hitch as the writer and Tony Daniel as the artist, I do like me some Tony Daniel art so this is my DC pick of the week.
Marvel Pick:
Star Wars #21 (Marvel) – I’m picking this not only because it’s Star Wars but because the cover is just awesome. Aja brings us a kick ass Stormtrooper cover. There are lots of Stormtrooper fans out there so I can only imagine these will be gobbled up more quickly than some of the past issues.
Indie Pick of the Week:
Once Our Land #1 (Scout Comics) – “An amazing debut comic from a visionary new creator! Once Our Land is a post-apocalyptic tale set in 1830s Germany. It is the tale of two survivors, Ingrid and Fritz, as they battle each day against mysterious invaders that have surfaced and wiped out everything they once knew. A fantasy, sci-fi, period, and action story rolled into one epic package, Once Our Land is destined to be an all-ages classic!”
This one looks great and somehow I missed this as a Kickstarter which you can find here: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/903481970/once-our-land
You can also still order the HC graphic novel on the creators website at onceourland.com, regular or for a few bucks more signed with a doodle.
Midtown has these listed as being sold out already. A few other shops seem to be getting them later on this month, so be on the look out.
Image Pick of the Week:
Snotgirl #1 (Image) – Bryan Lee O’Malley brings us Lottie Person, Snotgirl. Sounds like it might be distasteful but I bet it’s going to be a hit. It is an ongoing series.
Specs of the Week:
Brickleberry #1 (Dynamite) – It had 3 seasons on Comedy Central. Produced by the funny Tosh.O. It has a loyal fan base so expect those who might not be regular comic book readers seeking this one out to get their fill of Brickleberry since it was canceled on Comedy Central, which I heard was great, I don’t watch a lot of TV so it’s something that been on my radar to try and watch on Netflix or whatever streaming service has it.
Black Hammer #1 (Dark Horse) – A new Dark Horse comic I can likely get behind since it’s the great Jeff Lemire.
“A new story from the prodigious brain of Jeff Lemire (Descender), amazingly realized by Dean Ormston (The Sandman) and Dave Stewart (Hellboy)! Once they were heroes, but that age has long since passed. Banished from existence by a multiversal crisis, the old champions of Spiral City – Abraham Slam, Golden Gail, Colonel Weird, Madame Dragonfly, and Barbalien – now lead simple lives in a timeless farming town. Even as they try to find their way home, trouble has a unique way of finding heroes wherever they are!”
The Honorable Mention Pick:
Chew #56 (Image) – It’s back after a break with it’s final story arc, which makes me so sad to see this great book end but it did have a great run. Hopefully John Layman teams up with Rob! with something all new when this series is done, because they simply compliment one another.
So what are you picking up? Do you agree with my picks? If you don’t, well, I don’t even want to hear about it because Poyo rules and you should pick up everything I pick. =)

  1. Is there any difference besides the print edition between the “Once our land” kickstarter graphic novel vs the Scout Comics publication?

      1. Yes, that is my understanding as well. Although the HC claims it’s 110 pages (with probably a few blanks, credits and such), I’m wondering if the two single issues are going to be close to 45-50 pages each, which would be awesome.

  2. And it looks like Once Our Land is a possible early winner candidate, some listings already on eBay are for $28.89 and up with sold listings already in the $30 to $40 range.

  3. I didn’t actually like Brickleberry Poyo. It seemed to me like it was trying too hard to be kind of like South Park but in its effort to have us yell, “Oh my God, it went there!” It just made me go, “Oh, it’s trying to be shocking but just looks dumb.”

    1. I actually haven’t watched it myself. I do like Tosh.O though so figured if it’s along his lines of humor I’d likely like it. I never got into South Park myself, I found it funny but just zero desire to ever sit and watch it.

      1. That was the thing with Brickleberry, I really expected to like it as a Tosh.0 fan and found myself horribly disappointed. You may of course like it, I just didn’t want you to get your hopes up too high and then be let down. 🙂

        1. I always keep my expectations pretty low on everything.. I do put some expectations on my own picks each week though but for the most part, that’s just the spec part of it. Sometimes I don’t even pick up my own spec’s because I don’t think it’ll be my type of read, etc.
