Comics Picks of the Week for Delivery 9/7/16

Each week hundreds of new comics hit the shelves, each with potential. Some live up to that potential. We pick the ones we think have the best shot at heating up. Here are our picks of the week for delivery 9/7/16:
This is going to be an expensive week. Real expensive. Tons of new books, lots of returning favorites.
Returning Favorites
BEAUTY #10– One of our favorite series here. A STD that gives people their perfect look but they die within a year. The second story arc has been focusing on individual stories.
NAILBITER #25– Another favorites series around here. A town that spawns serial killers. Why isn’t this a tv series yet?
PAPER GIRLS #9– BKV’s crazy good series that involves newspaper delivery girls, time travel, giant monsters, and so much more.
UNFOLLOW #11– Start with 140 people all sharing a huge sum of money evenly distributed. However, if one should die then the money is further distributed. What can go wrong?
Re-Returning Favorites
NIGHT TRAP #3 – The fixed version of the error we reported not too long ago.
The One That Will Get the Press
ALTERS #1 – First series about transgender superheroes. Sure, there have been transgender heroes before, but this is a full book that focuses on them. I imagine stories will hit Tuesday night into Wednesday morning. Already selling out on line.
New #1’s
ECLIPSE #1 – New Image series. In the near future, a mysterious solar event has transformed the sun’s light into deadly immolating rays. The world’s few survivors now live in nocturnal cities. But a killer emerges who uses sunlight to burn his victims, and when he targets the daughter of a solar power mogul, it falls to a disillusioned solar engineer to protect her.
GLITTERBOMB #1 – Jim Zubb’s new Image series. Farrah Durante is a middle-aged actress hunting for her next gig in an industry where youth trumps experience. Her frustrations become an emotional lure for something horrifying out beyond the water… something ready to exact revenge on the shallow celebrity-obsessed culture that’s led her astray.
GREAT DIVIDE #1 – New horror series from Dynamite. People die horrible deaths when they are touched by other people, and the survivors have to deal with the memories of those they killed. Two great homage covers on the book, including one by CHU favorite artist Kyle Strahm.
EVERAFTER FROM THE PAGES OF FABLES #1 – fan favorite Fables returns to comic stands
SKYBOURNE #1 – New Frank Cho series (art and story). Imagine James Bond with fantasy elements. A modern day King Arthur story.
The One with the Walking and the Dead
WALKING DEAD #158 – Whisper War has kicked off and we should be getting in to the opening salvo. Negan has already taken the head off the Whisperers, literally. Just can not pass up a Walking Dead issue as they always end up selling for over cover.
Small Press Pick of the Week
Thin #1– Jon Clark’s Famous Monsters Silver Scream Fest Award winning story finally hits stores. Already sold out at TFAW and Mycomicshop.
Pick of the Week
ANIMOSITY #1 2ND PTG – No doubt the 2nd print on Animosity will go fast, grab copies. It has sold out already and gone through multiple reprints.

  1. I didn’t see anything on Midtown regarding Animosity #1 2nd print which is odd. You sure that is this week? Must be super super small print run?

      1. I never even saw the 2nd print. I’ve been looking on ebay too. The only listings I’ve seen are 1st. I saw a 3rd last week as a pre sell. Either the 2nds are disappearing as fast as they go up or people are holding them.

    1. I’ve seen more and more the weird occurrence where the 2nd print of a comic is worth as much as or in a rare case even more than the 1st print of a comic lately. Am I crazy or is that in fact happening?

      1. It is happening and there are numerous occurrences where this has happened with later prints being worth more than first prints.

  2. I’m interested in, “Eclipse,” and, “Glitterbomb,” because generally the new Image books have all been at least a decent read. Also, I really hope, “Alters,” is good considering that AfterShock can be EXTREMELY hit-or-miss with their comics, putting out some stellar stuff and some less-than-good-stuff. A good idea like the one within Alters deserves a good story and artwork to go with it.

  3. This was a loaded post! lots a great books. I really hope I get my corrected version of Night Trap. My shop never mentioned it to me but hopefully they got the correct information and it’s waiting on me tonight.

  4. Ssalefish has Animosity #1 variants up on the bay for 15.20 +s/h. They’re going quick. Limited to 200 per ssalefish.
Still not seeing #1 2nd prints. There are some 3rds up for pre sell. Already sold out @ midtown.

      1. I just bought the only 2 copies I found on ebay. Both being sold with 1st prints. I don’t know what the print run was on the 2nd print, but like you said there’s been a crazy trend of 2nds being valued @ as much or more than 1sts because of smaller print runs.
If this series gets optioned they’ll go nuclear. Hopefully Bennett has a great story to tell. I remember Patterson’s tv show Zoo last year (haven’t watched it), and don’t know how well that did. With a child as main protagonist though this would be almost better as an animated series or movie.
Still really bummed I missed both of the Variants for Frankie’s comics. Those were killer covers.

  5. Tony, Did your local shop know about the free replacement for Night Trap #3? My shop didn’t, said they were charged on their inovice, and were going to charge me also. I said it was supposed to be a replacement for anyone who ordered it the first time and he gave it to me for free but I felt like he was really just doing me a favor versus this being something I was supposed to get.

    1. They should not have been charged for it. My lcs also got the replacement copies but said they paid for them and were charging for them. I said they should have gotten an email from diamond mentioning the replacement copies being sent out.

      1. Did you walk out empty handed then? I don’t want my shop holding the bag for it and I’ll probably offer to pay for the book next week. I looked on Lion Forge’s Facebook site but it doesn’t mention anything about the replacement books.

    2. I buy most of my books from DCBS, and I messaged them about the Night Trap issue. They said they received replacement copies and were giving them to those who’d originally purchased #3 free-of-charge. They implied that they did not have to pay for them. Pretty interesting when a smaller company like Lions Forge is willing to do something like this, when a more well-known company like Dynamite doesn’t even bother to correct a huge mistake. Did anyone read Smiley the Psychotic Button by Mike Raicht, back in 2014 or so? The final pages of the issue have the Wrong Dialogue, as the lettering starts to repeat the text from the First Few Pages of the book. So the entire ending to the story is illogical. I don’t know if Smiley was ever reprinted in one of the Dynamite Chaos TPB’s, but I’d be curious to see if they fixed it for those. They were made aware of this error when the single issue came out, but they didn’t bother to do anything about it. It would have been for them to have even posted the original script ending online or something, just so people could see what was actually meant to go in those dialogue boxes & word balloons! They totally dropped the ball on that one…

      1. Out of respect to Brian Pulado I will not read Smiley or Evil Ernie. He lost the rights to the characters a long time ago and I feel like he was “done wrong”

        1. Really? This whole time I thought Brian Pulido was licensing out the characters, and was still making money off of them. I’ll have to look up what happened; if it’s public. I got Smiley because I know writer Mike Raicht; and checked out Evil Ernie since Seeley was writing it… and to see that they basically used Mistress Hell as a stand-in for Lady Death, serving pretty much the same purpose as that character, since Dynamite couldn’t use her.

          1. Loved Mike Raicht on Wild Blue Yonder. Word at one point it was getting adapted into a movie. Then into a video game. Not sure either are still on.
The Chaos stuff is a pretty simple story. Brian Pulido filed bankruptcy and the characters were sold off. He regained lady death. When I asked him about regaining control of his other characters he said “meh, time to do new things like La Muerta”.

            1. Yeah, Wild Blue Yonder, the series, was only supposed to be on hiatus. They were trying to get a whole other arc written & drawn in advance so that the publishing schedule would be on-time for it… but it’s been a long time since I’ve heard anything on it. I knew about the movie deal back when the series was still coming out, but didn’t hear about a video game. One of his other projects, Stuff Of Legend, has also had a lot of media potential and I *may* have heard something about a video game on that one.
With Pulido’s bankruptcy, I didn’t realize he lost the rights to his characters due to that. I didn’t think bankruptcy fulfillment would require something like that; to sell off rights as a form of asset liquidation. I assumed he leased-out Evil Ernie & the rest, and only actively continued to work on Lady Death. I do feel like the other characters can’t attract the same attention that they used to. Any revival has barely lasted, before the titles go into disuse again.

      2. I would have been happy with a free digital issue of this book. I’m even happier with a full reprinting but I feel bad that I took the issue for free when my comic shop appears to have paid for the issue.

        1. They shouldn’t have had to pay for it. I have requests out to a couple of retailers about getting me a copy of the email from diamond.

          1. I sent the owner of the comic shop a message and told him I’d either pay cover for the book, or pay his cost for the book, whatever he thought was right. If he doesn’t get something saying the book was a free replacement. I don’t know what cost on a $3 book is but I don’t feel right taking it from a small shop.

            1. When I spoke to Lions Forge they were very forthcoming with the knowledge there was an error in the book. They clearly stated diamond was contacted about replacement copies and that diamond had sent an email and the copies would be free. I have spoken to several retailers now who did not get the email from diamond and said they thought they were charged for books that they did not order (the replacement copies). Sucks to think a small retailer may have been hit twice for a book.
