Poyo's Picks for December 14th, 2016

It’s that time again, to buy more comics to your ever growing collections. Some of you collect, others sell to then only buy more. Whatever and however you collect comic books, this here is Poyo’s picks of the week.
DC/Vertigo Pick
Flash #12 (DC) – Williamson has made Flash a winner in my opinion and I’ve enjoyed reading this new Rebirth title, which is coming down as the best of them.
Marvel Pick
Hawkeye #1 (Marvel) – Kate Bishop is back as Hawkeye.. well, she was always Hawkeye, I think, now I’m confused, she’s Hawkeye but she’s not.. but she is. Well, she’s back and I guess she is Hawkeye now since well, Clint isn’t around for her to save.. unless he makes an appearance. Regardless, I love Kate Bishop so, there you have it.
I’m particularly eyeing the Aja Variant, just a sweet classic print style cover. Love it.

Small Publisher Pick
Green Valley #3 (Image) – I love this new series. Max Landis has a hit on his hands, at least in my opinion. If your not reading it, pick it up already. I think this one deserves more credit it’s not getting, at least I think. I’ve been working so much, I have had zero time to read comic book related articles so I’m kind of out of the loop lately.
Indie Pick of the Week
Motor Girl #2 (Abstract Studios) – From the creator writer/artist of Rachel Rising, #1 sold out almost every where online. It’s a new Terry Moore book and expect lower print runs on #2, so grab’em if you find them.
So now I end with my rant on Black Mask. Yes, Black Mask. The guys who had a slew of new comics come out, great comics in fact. Then did a disappearing act with almost every single title (except Space Riders, which was awesome), claimed it was resolved but yet we still see huge delays, gaps, whatever you want to call it. Is it the publisher, is it the artists or writers? Perhaps Diamond to blame.. all I know is I’m done for the most part with them until they start pushing out their books in a more consistent time frame to keep readers wondering and waiting if they’re ever gonna get to finish reading a new book sometime this century.
Young Terrorists hit stands over a year ago, August 19th to be exact. Then they throw out a 3rd print last week now since Young Terrorists #2 hits stands tomorrow. Oh thanks Black Mask, you’re so slow in releasing new books to keep your stories interesting that you try and con us comic nerds into buying your 3rd print (that’s not even in demand) to get the title back out on the shelves so people likely pick up #2 16 months after the original release? Thanks but no thanks, I lost interest in Young Terrorists about 12 months ago.. and this isn’t the only title that your losing me with.
Nuff said!

  1. I agree with comments about Young Terrorists, but what ever happened to the remaining issues for 4 Kids Walk Into a Bank? Are the final issues ever going to be released? If they release any more good books, I’ll probably wait for them to come out in trade. No confidence in their release schedule any more.

      1. There was an article in Comic Shop News recently about the 4 Kids delays.
He was helping his father through an illness, but new issues are supposed to be coming.

        1. Which issue? Cause I read on Facebook post that one reason #3 was delayed was Tyler was getting married, which was back in early October.. that’s one long damn honeymoon if you ask me.. πŸ˜‰
Also the fact he’s solicited being at most major Comic Cons.. I know he was at SDCC and NYCC.. Hmm..

      2. The article says #3 is coming out Dec 21st (Tyler is working on #5). Rosenburg also takes the blame for the delays and says the new issues will have ten more pages at no additional cost. This was all in CSN 1537. So, we’ll see……

        1. So they get somewhat of a pass. That sucks about his dad but if honestly, not too sound like a total prick, he said this went down in February? So he released issue #1 in January, then of course, delays for #2 makes sense but that doesn’t explain the rest of the delays to me. Oh well, regardless, I’ve lost interest at this point.. it’s not just delays that put me off for Black Mask, it’s other things too..

            1. Sadly, my dad’s passing was expected.. I was prepared months in advance. He had several chances to change his life but didn’t.. My last words in person to him were.. “If you don’t change, next time I’m up here visiting, it’ll be for your funeral Dad.” It was within a year I was up there, making the decision to pull the plug and then of course the funeral happened next.. πŸ™

      3. I loved 4 kids but geez…who can remember what’s going on with it. I’ll finish out that series and take the issues when they come but besides that I’m pretty much done with Black Mask.

  2. I asked the creators when the next issue of 4 kids was coming out back at the Baltimore con and they kind of laugh and said the should get to work on it almost like they had never had a plan to do any more issues, Rosenberg is working on kingpin now for marvel so maybe he just quit caring about 4 kids

    1. Yeah, seems they like to just pump out special variants and sell their massive amounts of #1 copies at the cons if you ask me.. at least, that’s the feeling I get from them at this point.
You know, I can be sympathetic and feel empathy for people if they are having a hard time truly getting their work done if they hit hard times or something comes up. But if it was me, I wouldn’t release a book knowing it’s not finished or never going to be finished in the future. If that’s the goal of most Black Mask or any other comic publisher, to bask the in the glory of selling as many #1’s as you can with no real intent on ever finishing your story or product, playing on the spec market.. then shame on you! Sometimes I just get that sense from some of the publishers. You see a new #1, then bam.. never again. It’s like those overnight companies, they come in, sell you a product with false promises knowing they’ll never return.

  3. Along those same lines… I thought I saw a recent issue of Peter Panzerfaust a couple of weeks ago also. I kinda liked that series, so i will definitely be looking for the next few issues. think I heard it was going to be finished soon anyway.

    1. Yeah, that’s a title I’m just done with.. I’ve come up with a new term, Wieb’ed or Wiebish..
      Definition:
wiebed ( -ish) – when a comic book writer or artist is solely responsible for ruining their own comic book; wiebish – on the verge of ruining
      Examples:
Anthony wiebed his only comic book by talking smack about the fans who buy such book.
Anthony is acting wiebish by telling comic book speculators to stop selling his book on the secondary market for more money cause it makes him mad cause he isn’t making that much money himself.

  4. Great article- couldn’t agree more with the Black Mask fiasco. I absolutely love small publisher/indie books, but the delays for whatever reason absolutely kill the interest for these titles. It’s really unfortunate.
Green Valley is so amazing and that Hawkeye cover is really cool! I read Motor Girl and do not understand what the appeal is, but I’m happy to sell my copies of #1 & #2 soon. Just not one for me I think.

    1. I love Terry Moore’s art. Motor girl has me thinking. On the surface it is about a woman who works in a junk yard with her talking gorilla, however, she served in war and I think there is more going on as in PTSD or something that causes her to have this talking gorilla and sees aliens.

      1. Very interesting- maybe after it’s collected I’ll give it another shot. I really liked Strangers In Paradise, but I read that as trades. So, I may have been more patient. I definitely have mad respect for anyone that can write and draw their own books. In freshman college Comp1 I decided that I was going to make a comic book for my creative project, and it took way longer than I expected. That is really hard work!

  5. Good Picks, i’m liking the Maurgerite Sauvage cover for Hawkeye#1, I think i pre-ordered that and the Aja.

    1. I ordered the AJA as well, I have liked the other Hawkeyes, I hope this is just as good. Couldn’t pass on the cover

  6. I think “4 Kids Walk Into A Bank” is the only Black Mask title I care to get when it finally comes out. I definitely liked the first 2 issues. This is a situation where if I was lukewarm about the first and/or second issues, and there was a hiatus this long, I would end up dropping the book because I couldn’t remember *how much* I liked it, and knew it wasn’t enough to be sure about the title, so I would just drop it. “4 Kids” was something I was sure I liked and wanted to read more. But speaking of these crazy long delays… whatever happened to “Wytches”? Didn’t they advertise a return for Fall 2015? I know it was never solicited, but I’d swear there was an advertisement in the books themselves… I know I saw one online… alluding to the next arc and the date… is it moving to the desert? I know it was someplace without Trees… but it’s been so long, I can’t even remember what the ad looked like, lol. But I know I really liked that title, and whenever it comes out, I am figuring they will have the 6 issues already Done and released back-to-back, so at least that is a plus… but have they not mentioned anything about it in over a year?

    1. Watches will be done in 6 issue arcs. I spoke to Scott Snyder in Baltimore about it and he said it will be coming back and look for an announcement in the early part of 2017.
