Poyo's Picks of the Week for January 25th, 2017

It’s a new week, a new comic book week. Because that’s what we all look forward to right? Not to spend time with family or the kids, but to read comic books and hide from those who don’t understand our addiction problem in buying paper with pretty pictures made from ink on them..
So, my DC/Vertigo Pick of the weeks goes to…

Odyssey of the Amazons #1 (DC) – A new miniseries set in the world of Wonder Woman, before her actual birth. A group set out to find others of their own kind. If done right, this sounds like it could be a hit. I’m also betting this was not heavily ordered by most shops as likely getting overlooked. So keep a look out and it’s definitely worth checking out.
This weeks Marvel Pick goes to….

Star Wars #27 (Marvel) 40th Anniversary Cover – This is just a sweet cover that captures a great moment of C3PO encountering Darth Vader. Buy it, tuck away in your personal collection until you die..
Small Publisher Pick goes to..

Dead Inside #2 (Dark Horse) – I really enjoyed #1. I’m a huge fan of crime solving stories so this one is right up my alley. If you like Law & Order type of shows, you’ll like this one as well.
Indie Pick of the Week goes to….

Hillbilly #5 (Albatross) – Eric Powell has a hit series here. It’s a must pick up if you haven’t done so already. Good luck finding #1 out in the wild though..
Now, why didn’t I mention the new Black Mask book that’s coming out you might be wondering? Well, for one thing, I think the book (Dregs #1 if your not sure what I’m referring to) sounds great. I’ll likely pick it up to check out. But here’s the thing, Black Mask has left a sour taste in my mouth lately. They release a book and then vanish.. so I don’t want to invest a lot of time and effort into a new series if we don’t see #2 hit the stands a year from now.. I hope that’s not the case with this book or most of their future books but well, they don’t have the best track record as of lately.
If you want to keep readers, you have to stay consistent. You start playing games like Black Mask has done in the past, your not going to keep readers around. Releasing a 3rd print of a #1 a year after the first print has been out with no demand for a 3rd print just to prepare readers for the second issue a week later is just bad business.. Yeah, I’m talking about you Young Terrorists.. I’m still a little bitter about that one..
That’s all I got for this week. Add a comment, bash me in the comments section or tell me I suck for hating on Black Mask. Or you can join my hating on Black Mask if you want.. speak up either way, tell us stuff. Tell us what you like or don’t like. It’s all good!

    1. I’m glad I’m not the only one hat’in on Black Mask.
You reading this Black Mask? Earn our trust back.. 😉

  1. I totally forgot transference hadn’t finished. How long ago was it when issue 2 came out? I know 4 Kids had a big delay between issue 2 and 3. Anything they put out, I’ll wait for the trade until they can show me that their books will come out on a fairly consistent basis.

  2. To me Black Mask has been like this one hot fun girl in my life who I was always really excited to hang out with. In the beginning it was great. She was around, we always had a lot of fun no matter what we did. After a little while, she’d start cancelling at the last minute and eventually she’d just disappear….for like a year! And then out of nowhere she sends you a video of the last time you hung out trying to warm you up before she pops back up and reenters your life acting like nothing ever happened. Eventually you smarten up, maybe get a little bitter and ignore her attempts to reach you. But if you’re okay with having a fun hot girl in your life only every so often because you know it’s going to be a great time nearly every time…….

    1. Lol. Great analogy. However these stories end up with “I ended up not hearing from her for a while and then she called to say she has herpies.” Not speaking from experience, but I know some guys.

      1. Hah! I’ve dodged that bullet luckily. But yeah…I know some guys too! Wink wink.
Or the stories could end with an invite to the Maury Povich show a year later…….better start practicing your “I’m not the Daddy Dance” just in case.
Anyways back on track, hopefully Black Mask gets their stuff together. I’d like to hang with that hot fun girl again……minus the herpies.

        1. Lol. And great supporting comicbookrealm. I got my start on their boards years ago on the comics heating up Forum over there. Still stop by from time to time. Still track my stuff there too.

        1. Excellent. You guys don’t have everything because James Haick just sent me the first batch of the Scout Comics Preparation guide. Lol. These will be hitting stores soon but I will be giving some away here.

  3. Black Mask jumped the shark over a year ago. Couldn’t sell the LCSD box for more than retail a day after it came out

      1. Yup, I listed mine like an hour after you listed and sold yours, I didn’t even end up selling mine. In fact, I acquired two of them, one to keep, one to sell. I still have the second one still sealed. Austin Books ended up having around 5 more boxes available that took them probably 4-5 months to get rid of.

  4. It also gets annoying when you are actually following a book that is chronically delayed, and you have to keep re-pre-ordering it every time it gets cancelled and resolicited. Lately with my regular titles, Black Mask & Archie have been the biggest offenders. Issues of Sabrina & Afterlife with Archie are constantly cancelled and resolicited to the point that they should just stop soliciting future issues if they aren’t reasonably certain they will be released. They re-solicited Sabrina#5 at least 3 times, so why did they even bother to solicit #6 & 7 an additional two times, when it should have been obvious they could barely get 5 out, let alone 2 more issues right after it. Archie is at least benefiting from having most issues tell a stand-alone story with only bits of a larger mythos, while other titles are impossible to follow because you’ve forgotten what happened in the previous issue a year ago…

    1. I was told by Archie representatives in no uncertain terms that they are creating art and art cannot be rushed. I said in no uncertain terms that it may be art but it is still comics and if you want people to buy the art it needs to come out.
