Poyo's Picks for February 1st, 2017

It’s National Image Day. So if your lucky, you might be near a comic shop that’s hosting an Image party to celebrate Image’s 25th Anniversary. One shop in my area is having a party, so I might have to swing by and check it out. So feel free to comment if you have an Image Day at any of your local shops with signings, giveaways, etc.
Besides Image Day (which I thought would have more books being released on such a day), let’s get on with my precious picks of what I think you should pick up, whether it’s a flip, a read or you just want to buy it cause it’s so pretty..

DC/Vertigo

There’s just not a whole lot besides Batman #16 and Superman #16. These are the only strong titles I’m still on board with out of everything being released for February 1st. Tom King has revived Batman lately for me, seems to be getting more interesting and stronger story lines so here’s to hoping Batman keeps at this pace of keeping us entertained.
The regular cover for Batman is pretty sweet too, let’s applaud David Finch for an awesome regular cover that doesn’t cost one an arm and a leg to obtain.
Marvel

Bullseye #1, written by Ed Brisson. Don’t pick this one up for the spec but pick it up for likely the great writing. I enjoy Brisson so I don’t anticipate this is going to be like the Superior Foes of Spider-Man style but I’m hoping it’s just as enjoyable. I think this series will be overlooked and it will be a sleeper hit. There are a ton of variants as well, but don’t go spending crazy money on these. You’ll likely find these for half the price or more days, weeks or years from now.
What, you didn’t pick a new Star Wars book? You chicken.. how or why did you pick Bullseye #1 over Darth Maul #1?

Is that what you’re thinking right now? Well, first of all, I didn’t pick Bullseye #1 over Darth Maul #1, I just pick’em how I see’em, but don’t get me wrong. I love Star Wars. I even love Darth Maul in a heterosexual kind of way (sorry, the horns just don’t do it for me). Since this is just a mini-series spin-off of one of our beloved Sith we all love to hate, I think this one will be one of those series you find in the dollar bin months and possibly years from now. They killed him off early in the movie and Star Wars timeline that there’s really no other way to make him more popular I think amongst existing fans and new fans. I will say this though, I look forward to this series since Cullen Bunn is writing it and look out for that Max Brooks variant, it is a pretty sweet variant.
Small Publisher Pick of the Week

You can likely already guess it’s going to be Walking Dead #163. I mean, come on, it’s only 25 cents a copy. It’s going to have crazy print numbers (only because issues were 25 cents each and everyone just wanted to order enough to get the 1:200 and 1:500 variants). But this is still a Walking Dead book and has the potential to heat up, especially if the story line makes its way into the show, a death or first appearance occurs. I think I’ve pre-ordered close to 75 books so far. Why so many? Well, most are going to get cut up and I’m going to wrap long and short boxes with the pages to turn some of my boring white comic boxes into fancy Walking Dead comic boxes.
Indie Pick of the Week

This weeks indie pick goes to Blood Blister #1. Aftershock has put out some really great stuff and they’re moving up the list of some of favorite reads each month with some of their ongoing titles. So I make sure to pay attention to any new books they come out with. So this one makes the list. I also love Tony Harris artwork so that’s another reason to check out this new horror book.
From the description, “Sin is a joke to Brandon Hull. Morality a crutch for the weak, laws mere tools to be abused. But when the corruption he scoffed at begins to manifest on his once-perfect body, Hull finds himself cast into a hidden world of unspeakable horror from which there is no escape. How can you be saved when the evil possessing you is your own soul? Opening a jarring window on to a world of horror from the writer of The Coffin, Firebreather, and Deathstroke and the Eisner Award-winning artist of Ex Machina and Starman.”
So, tell us what your spec’ing on or picking up. Tell me how much you hate my picks or how much you adore me, either way, let’s get this conversation going in the comments.

            1. Then the emperor was very weak.. Darth Vader threw him into one and didn’t even cut him in half for him to die.. πŸ˜‰

  1. I don’t know if anyone watches Star Wars Rebels, but the best episodes have involved Maul. He’s now more of a manipulator, who is actually searching for a way to destroy the Sith. Really good storyline.

    1. Yeah, from what I know, he really envisioned himself in Darth Vader’s shoes and role, ruling the galaxy and still wants to rule the galaxy.
