Wednesday Open Forum

Wednesday

Wednesday, the best day of the week, new comic book day. It is like your birthday in the middle of each week (well, one where you buy your own presents.)
We open things up to hear from you. A free for all.
The 123rd edition of the open forum!
Well, I am back from 8 days in sunny Orlando, and to my friends in the North East sorry to say, but it was sunny and 80 all week. Now I know why people move there.
Anyway, we are getting back on track this week. Winners for the Animosity M & M comic set will be drawn, and I habe two great give aways this week. You are not going to want to miss them.
Happy Valentines day to all. Hope you have all your ducks in a row this week. I am not dropping the ball on this one.
So if you had to pick one comic book to “be your valentine”, you know that special book you cherish more than pretty much anything else, which would it be? For the longest time mine was Comico Primer #2. I ended up picking it up years ago and while I cherish it, I now lust after Incredible Hulk 181. One day one will be mine.
As always we also want to hear about your weekly pickups.
So, What were your pick ups?
What had disappeared off the shelves?
What was sitting on the shelves?
What back issue deals did you grab?

  1. Anyone know why flash is a repeat tonight?
I just turned it on expecting a new episode and it’s not 🙁
Wish there was some news to report or at least had something interesting to say but I’ve been sick for a few days and literally have done nothing.
Tomorrow I hope to be well enough to grab:
    Batman
    Batwoman – both covers
    Clone conspiracy
    Deadpool
    Green lanterns
    Invincible
    Justice league
    Manifest destiny
    Nightwing
    Sex criminals
    Silk
    Spread
    Super sons – both covers
    Superman
    Thor
    Uncanny inhumans
    Walking dead

      1. Lol actually poyo, it was her who decided we weren’t doing that stuff this year. They don’t take reservations on the 14th around here so you have to go and wait. It takes about 3 hours to have dinner and we’re both sick. I got off easy this year!

        1. Yeah, we never go out to dinner on actual Valentines day either though. Those people are nuts. You get stuck in crowded noisy restaurants and usually get crappy service..

  2. I’m likely dropping Sex Criminals… It was great read but the huge delay and the nostalgia has worn off…. This was a book they had to keep on top of things and a tight release schedule or they’d lose readers, like they did with me.

    1. If this issue isn’t totally awesome it will be dropped from my pull as well. It’s been getting too preachy anyways.

    2. I dropped it after whatever the last original XXX cover was. I really liked the series in the beginning but I think it lost its way. I haven’t read the last few of course but it went from one of my favorite reads to a strange book that I didn’t get.

  3. Ooof. My “valentine pick” for comics would be X-Men #1. GS X-Men #1 is a close 2nd though.
As far as pickups go tomorrow, I have quite a few on my list but I’m looking forward to see what God Country #2 has to offer as well as Super Sons #1. With all the hype of the latter, I hope it’s good.

  4. My Valentine book would be Action Comics #1. I’m a big Superman fan and just to hold on, would be a dream come true. How I see it is if it wasn’t for Superman being the first superhero, there wouldn’t be no other superheroes. Just my personal opinion lol

  5. My Valentine book would be…. Captain America Comics #1 most likely. It’s far out of reach for me, financially for sure. But talk about a conversation starter….

  6. I ordered most of my stuff for tomorrow last week. I’m sure I’ll get to a shop tomorrow to pick up a couple extra things. Last week I got a new car and I haven’t had a car payment in a long, long time, my car insurance went way up, so I’m just hoping it doesn’t cut into my comic budget.

    1. Congrats on the car. Except on the payment. They can be expensive pains in the you-know-what but so needed. Hopefully it doesn’t cut into your budget too much. My last car I had for 10 years to the day. I am very frugal and am more concerned with safety than looks. Paid for my new car two years ago in cash. Didn’t want the payment.

  7. My Valentine’s book would be Detective #400 Neal Adams 1st Man-bat. Back in the day, I had the Batman & Robin Four Adventure stories LP from 1975 with “Robin meets Man-bat” and I would listen to it all the time on my parents huge LP & 8 track player. Always loved Man-bat and you can’t go wrong with the best Batman artist ever. Now out of price range with mint copies going for more than $1k.
Looking forward tomorrow to God Country #2 and Kill or Be Killed #6 (Walking Dead variant).
Last weeks pick ups included Star Wars #4 (1st Sana Solo) Alex Ross sketch cover 1:100 for $24 and New Mutants #25, #27, and #28 for $14.

  8. Pick ups for the week, Gamora Cho cover, Old Man Logan. I’m debating on pre-ordering the Dell Otto Iron Fist looks great but the price for the limited ones seem high, most of the venoms are cheaper on eBay than they initially sold for.
Picked up two books last month that I had been waiting to grab
Giant Size Xmen 1 and Marvel Spotlight 5, both very clean very nice looking raw books, debating on getting them graded.

  9. Ordered the Jusko variants with 2 of the Venom cover, the Walking Dead Variant, the Kill or Be Killrd WD variant, & Cho Harley. I’ll grab a Super Sons too.
Also put an order in with my lcs for the lenticular Batman & Flash “button” covers.

  10. Right now my favorite comic to pull out and admire is Captain America Sam Wilson #7 Alex Ross variant cover or the Deadpool #25 Mark brooks cover that I just can’t get over how nice it looks. My fun purchase of the week was a Batman Adventures #12 that was mistakenly posted as a Batgirl Adventures #12 comic and so I was able to get a killer deal on a unread NM copy that no one else was watching the auction. Other picks this week were Savage She Hulk #1 and Marvel Super Heroes #8 winter edition as I’ve been trying to add some first appearances to my collection.
This week I went back and read Planetoid after reading Planetoid Praxis and really loved Ken Garings first series and where the story is going. Other good reads have been King Pin and Bullseye series and I can’t wait for the next curse words.
    This week picks:
    Gamora #3 1;25 Cho variant
    God Country reprint and #2
    Supersons
    Wildstorm #1

  11. This week’s pick up are
Harley Quinn #14 ( for the wife)
Super Sons #1 ×2 ( for my boys)
Teen Titans Go! #20 ×2 ( for my boys)
Batman TMNT adventures #4 ( for my boys)
Kill or be killed #6 Tribute variant
    Spread #19
    WD #164 ×2
Deadpool #27 ( the cover had me laughing. So I might just get it for that lol)
Silk #17 ( for the wife)
    Venom #4
Back issues I got uncanny x-men #114 and was able to find a nice NM copy of seven to eternity #1 and its going off to CGC.

    1. A family affair haha. Good find on Seven to Eternity. Im waiting for Once Our land to come in the mail, I found Once Our Land #2 cover price the other day so went to find #1

      1. LOL. Yeah I think comics is the best way to get kids into reading. That’s how I got my oldest into reading. He wasn’t a big fan of it till I introduced him to comics. He has read the complete Diary of a Wimpy Kid series 3 times. And he’s on book 2 of the Harry Potter series. And he got those for Christmas.

    2. Thankfully my kids love reading. I need to start buying more books for them but my wife already gets on me for spending too much. So if I have to cut a book…Well….Sorry kids, it won’t be my books muhahahahaha!

  12. I’ll do my list a bit later, but I did a cheeky bit of business at the weekend!
Someone came in with a massive undercut on the Poe Dameron 40th Anniversary cover on the bay; they’ve been selling at £24, he listed at £13.50 BIN with a best offer. So I offered £8, rejected; £9, rejected; £10, accepted. So I listed one of mine for £24 and sold within 12 hours!! Ha ha still have that warm after glow from a canny piece of business / nefarious world domineering plans ??

    1. I called a shop last week that I don’t visit very often to get a copy of Death be Damned last week. When I went into the shop on Sunday I was looking at his bins and found a Poe Dameron #10 40th for $12 CDN. I’m holding onto this one, as I am building two complete sets of these anniversary variants. I paid $30 for a copy on eBay two weeks ago. So happy I didn’t need to go to the bay for that 2nd copy.

      1. Resist the temptation. I think the complete set will fetch you more net value than the individual sale of that one book.

      2. I was debating on doing one complete set or two, I settled on one. I also think that a complete set will be worth more in the long run.

  13. Just back from my LCS – picked up
    Extremity ashcan
    WWE #2 1:25 variant
    Walking Dead 164, Spiderman
    Animosity 5
Spider-Man 13 (am looking fwd to the new Zdarsky spider-man!)
    Clone Conspiracy
and got Rift #2 – lovely letter Anthony!
    Broken Moon #3
    Wild Storm #1 (lee variant)

  14. Busy week of orders for me:
WONDER WOMAN: ODYSSEY OF THE AMAZONS #2
FOREVER WAR #1A – I have never read the graphic novel, but the book is one that all sci-fi fans should read!
THE WILD STORM #1 – all covers
STAR WARS: POE DAMERON #11B – 40TH ANNIVERSARY VARIANT
    HORIZON #8 – cheeky!
    GOD COUNTRY #2A, #2B & #2C IMAGE TRIBUTE
    GOD COUNTRY #1 – 2ND PRINTING
KILL OR BE KILLED #6A & #6B – IMAGE TRIBUTE VARIANT – moved into my number one comic “KOBK, you… Are my number one comic!”
Manifest Destiny #26 (Image Tribute Variant)
Invincible #133 (Image Tribute Variant) x10 (only 25 pence so why not!?)
SPIDER-MAN: DEAD NO MORE – THE CLONE CONSPIRACY #5A
    THE WALKING DEAD #164A & #164B – IMAGE 25TH ANNIVERSARY VARIANT
    SUPER SONS #1A & #1B
BATWOMAN: REBIRTH #1A #1B – JAE LEE VARIANT
    BATMAN #17A & #17B – TIM SALE VARIANT
VENOM #4 JUSKO CORNER BOX VARIANT COVER
Pre-ordered Sex Criminals #16 (Image Tribute Variant) from Forbidden Planet, but those gobshites look like they won’t be fulfilling the order, so probably pick on up on eBay.
I am sure I ordered some more, if I find them I”ll put them up!

  15. God Country #1 2nd print looks under ordered. My shop usually stocks lots of 2nd print Image books. Got there at opening and grabbed the only copy. How does it look where you guys are shopping?

    1. The big LCS I visit, had about 4 copies of both cover a & b. And about ten cover c. It seemed under ordered to me. I couldn’t find issue 1 2nd print anywhere. Went to 4 shops.

      1. Someone already thrown God Country #1 2nd print up on eBay for £9.99, all those at cover on the bay long gone. I only got one, was limited to one per customer ?

      2. I’m with Jesus (now there’s something I don’t normally say!)(meaning biblical Jesus lol) definitely Action Comics #1. The day I win the big lottery, I am gonna get me one of those bad boys!

  16. Added some book to an already heavy week. Still waiting for confirmation from my LCS on the titles I added.
    Regular Pulls:
Harley Quinn #14 (Cover B Frank Cho)
God Country #2 (Cover C Geoff Shaw & Jason Wordie)
Walking Dead #164 (Cover B Charlie Adlard & Dave Stewart Image Tribute Variant)
Monsters Unleashed #3 (Of 5)(Francesco Francavilla ’50s Movie Poster Variant Cover)
Rift #2 (Of 4) Still on the lookout for #1
    Trying these this week:
Batwoman Rebirth #1 (Cover B Jae Lee)
Super Sons #1 (Cover B Dustin Nguyen)
Wild Storm #1 (Cover C Jim Lee & Scott Williams)
Heathen #1 (Cover B Natasha Alterici)
Issues I added for this week only
Invincible #133 (Cover A Ryan Ottley & Nathan Fairbairn)
Invincible #133 (Cover B Ryan Ottley & Nathan Fairbairn Image Tribute Variant)
Star Wars Poe Dameron #11 (Michael Walsh Star Wars 40th Anniversary Variant Cover)
I think I will chase them all. Tony what did you call us? Completionist? Love that word.
True Believers Wolverine Enemy Of The State #1
    True Believers Wolverine X-23 #1
Venom #4 (Joe Jusko Corner Box Variant Cover) I managed to snag the GOTG and Champions last week.

  17. Did Reborn #5 come out today, I think it was meant to? Really struggling to find this to order anywhere, even if it didn’t come out today? And is it limited series? Sure I saw something that said it goes to six issues…

  18. Batman #17 It’s gotten good after a weird start.
    Peepland #4
    James Bond Hammerhead #5
Kill or Be Killed #6 Tony! You need to get this off of your stack and read it
The Punisher #9 This might be the longest i’ve ever held on to a Marvel Book
    Violent Love #4

    1. I’m a long time Punisher fan but it also makes me sad about this series. I think #10 will be Dillon’s last issue on this that he had already finished before passing.. Might be his last known work, at least on a release schedule timeline..

  19. I had a fairly busy week. Got a Vengeance #1 (1st America Chavez) in the mail that was advertised as high grade copy. Pics looked good. Ordered from England. When it arrived, it was in terrible shape. The packaging was fine but the book has 23 spine creases. At least half are colour breaking. FML. I hate eBay disputes. Aargh. Picked up a Poe Dameron #10 40th for $12 and i am going back in 5 days to that store to get me my Valentines book, ASM #300. It’s been on this shop wall for a few months, CGC graded 9.6, and I confirmed it is still there, and now have the funds to go and buy it. I’m literally crossing my fingers and counting down the days. This book is essentially what got me reading comics back in the late 80’s, early 9o’s, and I have never owned a copy, but have wanted one for 27 years. I’m about to lose control…and I think I like it. My pick ups today were:
    TWD #163, free
TWD #163, 1:200, $45 CDN, gonna flip to offset the cost of the other one I have already.
    TWD #164A, #164C x2
    Worst X-Man #3, 1st Miranda, FREE!
    Wolverine X23 True Believers #1 x2
Batgirl #6, reg, can’t find any Manupols
    Savage #4
    Venom #4, Jusko x2, Reg
    God Country #1, 2nd print
    God Country #2A x3, #2B, 2C x2
    Harley #14, Cho x2
    Steve Rogers Cap #11 Jusko
    Daredevil #17 Jusko
    Doc Strange #17 Jusko
    Invincible Iron Man #4 Jusko
    Mighty Thor #16 Jusko
    Ultimates2 #4 Jusko
Clone Conspiracy #5, I am also looking forward to the new Zdarsky Spidey series
    Gamers #3
    OML #18
    Super Sons #1 reg
    Uncanny X-Men #18
    Batman/Tmnt Adv. #4
    Batman #16
    Animosity #5
I have an order of 13 books coming from Frankies today that I have been waiting on for 2 months that includes Simone Bianchi Super Sons, some Venom #3 & #4 b&w sets, Justice League #1 Lobo Stogie set and a Animosity: The Rise b&w set.

    1. The funny thing is I picked up ASM 300 off the 7-11 spinner racks for a couple of friends when I was a teenager working at the local 7-11. I had one for the longest time and sold it. Got one cheap two years ago and sold it and a NM98. I regret selling things all the time.

        1. Who me? Yeah. You should never worry about leaving money on the table. I got my NYX #3 off the stands for cover price so I did nicely. It was a 9.8 candidate and the buyer (private sale) came back and told me it was graded as such. Just makes me sick I sold it.

          >

            1. Me either, so I try not to get too upset when I miss out on them, other stuff will do just as well that I am getting now. I hope!
Just seen this listing on eBay: WOLVERINE # 80 1st TRUE APPEARANCE OF X-23 NM- HIGH GRADE. That’s the 90s Wolverine run, why does this guy think it’s the first true appearance of X-23?

              1. It’s the appearance of the x23 test tube. It would be like showing the mother of a character who has the egg in her ovary and saying it is the first “true” appearance.

                1. Lmfao some people will try anything! ? it’s. It not even the NM- he says, bad spine ticks, one looks like it’s cracked the colour (if that’s the right term) and seriously blunted bottom left corner of the spine

      1. I wish I had picked up that book when I was younger. I started collecting ASM around #320. I was anal as a kid, as far as my comics were concerned, so all my old books were bagged and boarded, waiting for me when I picked up the hobby again about 2 years ago. I’m building an ASM legacy right now. From my youth collection, I was able to start my legacy with mist of the McFarlanes, Cletus’ 1st and Carnages 1st. I’ve since picked up nice copies of 299 & 301, now daddys coming home. This will probably be the most I ever spend on a comic (about $600 CDN), but I really feel like this book can do nothing but appreciate over time so I’m justifying it as a retirement investment. Ya that’s right…a retirement investment. ?

        1. It’s actually a pretty wise choice. I know at some point all my 10’s of thousands of comics will be liquidated. Always said college for the kids but we have college savings plans and all. Some days I want them all gone.

      2. Oh, I’m gonna tell you all something that’s gonna make you all cringe.. NM98.. yeah, I recall having that book. I wasn’t a big NM fan either, so I remember it got tossed into the closet after it was read, didn’t even bother sticking it in a bag or board. It likely got scooped up during a spring cleaning, probably half trashed and sold at a garage sale.. or thrown away by one of the parents thinking it was trash.

        1. I had it too, got sold in a job lot of comics back in 2003 for about £30 for 160 comics, along with X-Force #2, #4, #5, #10, The Circle Chase mini and the second mini from 1994. I try not to weep…

          1. I had a lot of comics that likely got thrown out or sold from my early days of collecting. I started collecting in the mid 80s up until the early 90s… then I discovered girls.. once I settled on a girl, I found comics again.. funny how that works!

            1. Similar pattern to me, stopped collecting in 1984, too much beer to drink, too many girls to snog, then when I got engaged in 1989 I started again! What amazes me is how we hang on to the girls when we start collecting again, I know for certain I am not that lovable lol

      1. Thanks. I’m kinda pushing it. I’m stretching a few things for the next week in order to push up the purchase date. Lol

  20. Small week for me pickups included…….
    God Country #1 2nd print and #2a
    Venom #4b
New Superman #8a and b this issue get into what happened in Batman / Superman #32
I’m going to be around a couple more stores tomorrow so I might check them out.

  21. Monster week for me…….

  22. Not sure if anyone will pick this up in time, but Neil Gaiman is on the Shaun Keaveny Breakfast Show on BBC Radio 6music after 9.00 am this morning to chat about his new Norse mythology book. USA and Canada guys, the show goes up on the BBC iPlayer after broadcast, if you have a VPN you can set to UK you will be able to pick it up. With American Gods comic coming soon thought you’d all like to know…

    1. A good buddy of mine is also named Sean Keaveny. I can’t wait to tell him about his English Celebrity doppelgänger.

  23. Preface to the story is my mother had a heart attack last night and I was at the hospital with her until 1 AM. So not in the best mood to begin with.
Walked into the other local comic shop in the area where I work. I asked them if the got the Power Rangers #9 2nd Print cover that they ordered for me in. The guy looked around and couldn’t find it. I said ok, no big deal. I proceeded to pick up the new Harley Quinn Frank Cho cover, a God Country #1 2nd print and a God Country #2 (different cover than I picked up yesterday), as well as a Batgirl (Rebirth) #6B that was on the shelf at cover price.
The guy said since I had purchased a Batman One Per Store TPB and a WWE #1 title belt variant from him (both were on the shelf for cover price by the way) and that I sold them for a lot of money he would be checking all my purchases against eBay. I laughed and said ok what ever. (My wife was calling me to update me on my mom’s status and what was going on with our kids).
I got off the phone and he goes to ring me up and the first thing he does is rings up $9.99 for the Batgirl 6. I said wait you have to be kidding me. It’s VF at best, has been sitting on your shelf for months at cover price, and since I am coming in to buy it it is now $9.99. He said that is what they are selling for on eBay. He then mentions the second print God Country #1 2nd Print, which I had grabbed off the new issue rack was also selling for more. I told him to keep it.
He said how do you think I feel that the day after you buy something in my shop I see it for sale on your eBay page for $75. I laughed and said you are stalking my eBay site too? I said are you going to pay me for all the research I will be giving you to show you books on your rack that are selling for more than cover. (Which I have done numerous times in the past) or are you going to give me the one selling for less than cover price on eBay that you have on the self for cover price at the cheaper price.
    Pathetic low life shop.

    1. First Tony I hope your mum is improving and the prognosis is good.
Second, what the actual f…!?!? I can’t believe the bloody cheek of some people, we’ve said it before, he’s too lazy to do any kind of research or put stuff up on ebay, then expects you to pay eBay prices due to his laziness! Beggars belief. He should be paying you for pointing out stuff to him not penalising you for knowing what is what. A punch up the bracket will cure him of that!!

      1. Thanks. Prognosis is good. Had stents put in and they are working. She will be released tomorrow actually. My mom is the only person I know who was at the hospital already when she had her heart attack (timing of treatment is critical), she was visiting a friend.
But yes. The nerve to tell me, as I am on the phone with my wife finding out the current status of my mom, that he needs to “check eBay” to be a better retailer. At that point you are not a Retailer. You are a secondary market seller, who he complains about all the time. Two letters for them FU

        1. That is good timing. Similar thing happened to my step dad, he was at the eye clinic when he collapsed one time, straight into ER and sorted. Very pleased to hear she’s coming home tomorrow.
As for that other dick, well its beyond scummy.

      2. Hey Ton glad everything is going well with your mom. I almost lost mine last year for some shady dr decisions. And as for the douchebag of a store owner, I would stop buying from him and write bad reviews on his facebook page or yelp. People like that shouldn’t own a business.

    2. Sorry to hear about your mum’s health scare, Tony. I am glad to hear she is recovering and will be going home soon.
As far as the douche seller, I’ve made my sentiments about shops who pull such shenanigans very clear in earlier posts about this very topic. It’s foolish for them. I Would limit any purchases I make there to a minimum. Still visit to see if there is some quick flips to be had, but if he eBay’s you at checkout I would ‘accidentally ‘ drop them hard on the floor and not buy them. I have guy by me, he’s actually the nearest shop to me, but I rarely go there. I went there the other day for the first time in months (I had him selling a Choosing Sides #5 Trudeau Variant for he, and when it sold he lied to me about what it sold for, and took 50% commission instead of the 20% that we agreed to), to look for a Batgirl #6. I found a bunch of As but no Bs. I picked up a copy of cover A and there was a customer in front of me who had pre ordered s bunch of Star Wars 40ths and was there to pick them up. The guy charged his regular customer $10 per variant. When I paid for my $2.99 batgirl, which is typically 3.99 up here in Canada due to our dollar, he charged me $4.75. If we was better to me, he would be my LCS and would get my $50-$100 every week. Instead, I drive twice as far to a guy who has the best prices and gives you 20% store credit off of all new books bought on Wednesdays. The credit can be used for back issues or trades. Short story long, it’s bad business for a comic shop to alienate the local comic collectors.
