Small Press Spotlight: Heathen #1

If 2016 proved anything, its that quality projects from independent publishers were richly rewarded by collectors and speculator’s wallets.

With 2017 upon us, a new publisher, Vault Comics, has caught our eye. Launching next week is their first signature title, HEATHEN #1 by Natasha Alterici. This book tells the tale of Aydis, a Viking warrior and outcast, and a self-proclaimed heathen. Aydis is friend to the talking horse Saga, rescuer of the immortal Valkyrie Brynhild, and battler of demons and fantastic monsters. Aydis is a woman. Born into a time of warfare, suffering, and subjugation of women, she is on a mission to end the oppressive reign of the god-king Odin.
In our current geo political environment, it is quite likely that a well written book that centers on the fight for equality in a male dominated world will resonate with fans. And it IS well written, currently earning 4.5/5 stars from 39 ratings on goodreads.com and scoring a 9 on comic book round up.
The first issue is sold out at Diamond and has sold out online, including Midtown.
As with all start up independent publishers, the print run ought to be quite reasonable on this book, and there is also a 1:5 variant. But for the speculator, the one to watch is the retailer variant set for thecomicmint.com- limited to a microscopic 175 color and 75 black and white copies.

As of this article, you can still grab a set for $34.95, or just the color for $14.95 at The Comic Mint’s Website and also look for those Iron Fist variants as well.
while supplies last.
As with most projects the comic mint has sponsored, a percent of sales has been donated to a charity. Through their TCM Insiders facebook group, 240 dollars was raised for comicare.org , a great organization that makes visits dressed as super heros to several children’s hospitals. 1. The sets are cheap enough and the print runs are small enough that I took a chance on it. We’ll see how it goes.

  2. I meant to put an order in on Forbidden Planet (curse their rotten souls!) when you first mentioned this last month, but forgot! Just done so now, but chances of actually getting my order are close to zero!

        1. The mystery of my bad memory mentioned above has just been revealed… carbon monoxide poisoning! I kid you not.
Someone from the gas company was at my place today and noticed that the cap on the exhaust vent on my boiler was missing, so the fumes were being pumped back into my kitchen. Went to my doctors, they did a test, the CO in my blood is 18 ppm, for a smoker it’s normally 6 ppm. The culprit was the gas engineer who did the gas safety certificate in November, he obviously forgot to replace the cap when he finished his tests. Some safety test!

          1. Glad you are safe now though. Hopefully it will dissipate as the level of co2 in your home goes down and you get some fresh 02 pumping.

            1. Cheers Tony. The docs said the same, get out for a walk along the sea front and the levels will be back to normal soon enough. Ironically, only came to light due to my landlord being such a scrooge on building maintenance that something else went wrong, leading to gas board coming out and their guy spotting the missing cap.
Still gutted about Heathen, even if it doesn’t spec well it looks like a great read.

  3. Just nabbed a copy! A Place in Space had 4 for sale newly listed, 2 left when I saw, by the time I got to checkout it was down to last one. Wednesday really is like Christmas lol (Tuesday being Christmas eve of course!)

  4. Found 2 copies at my LCS, and I snatched them up with a quickness. Nice paper stock they use! And I grabbed one o’ those Comic Mint variants! Come on “Next Saga” price jump!

    1. That would be sweet. I got four copies. It was sold out everywhere around here but my LCS grabbed the copies for me because they thought I would like it.
