Comics Picks of the Week for Delivery 2/22/17

Each Week hundreds of new comics hit the stands, each with potential. Some live up to that potential. We pick the ones we feel have the best shot at heating up. Here are our picks of the week for 2/22/17:
Returning Favorites
Loose Ends #2– The first issue impressed me enough to put this one back on my list. Trying to track down the original self published books, including the FCBD one, has been a mission now.
Beauty #12 – One of the best and most underrated Image books on the market. Cool concept, great art and story.
Curse Words #2 – Looks for the Chip Zdarsky variant. Its funny and cheeky.
Divinity III Stalinverse #3 – Great read, awesome art. Totally cool book.
Few #2 – Good read. Cool concept. The first issue sold out and went to a second print. Also shot up a bit in price. Worth looking at.
Outcast #25– I do love the Robert Kirkman series. Has its own tv show. Still a cool read.
New Mignola-Verse Book
The Visitor How and Why He Stayed #1 – While Dark Horse does not put out many spec hits, this new Mike Mignola Series introduces a new character and his books are cult hits. This one is a long term grab and a potential $20 wall book in the future.
New #1’s
Quantum Teens are Go #1 – New Black Mask Series, billed as “mad science meets punk rock”. A pair of teen sweethearts break into super labs to steal parts to build a time machine but mysterious entities keep trying to stop them.
The One for the Video Game Fans
Street Fighter Vs. Dark Stalkers #0 – This intro issue might be enough to get fans of both series interested. Udon has done well with the Street Fighter franchise and the variants have produced some winners. Keep and eye on the Variant featuring Blanka fighting with Chun-Li in a bikini in old movie poster style.
Small Press Pick of the Week
The Old Guard #1 – Ok It’s Image, so they are a top three company, but I had to fit this one in as it is a must pick up. You cannot go wrong with a new Image #1 so this one is kind of a no brainer. This one will sell out and go to a second printing, just a matter of time. Could quickly jump up in price depending on how the fan reviews come back.
The Pick of the Week
Heathen #1– Sold out at Diamond, at TFAW, and Midtown, all good signs. Small press books hat will be difficult to find in areas. This could easily be the one everyone is looking for. Vault Comics uses nice, thick cover stock, so these could grade very well.
And in case you missed it, here is this week’s Spec Review Video

  1. Wasn’t Heathen already supposedly published in 2016 by Heavy Metal? #2 is projected to have the same cover. I’m curious as to why it’s being speced on now.

    1. I think Tony mentioned in the video that it was meant to be published by Heavy Metals, same as Atoll, but there was some kind of disagreement and it ended up at Vault. So no issues actually printed as far as I can tell.

      1. So it’s not a good read? Rucka tends to be moderately reliable to entertain. I just thought the premise sounded meh so I was gonna pass, but I’m hearing good things on the interwebs.

        1. I’m just not a Rucka fan…. He starts st Ong but then his books just become boring a few issues later… Like he just gives up. I did give Wonder Woman Rebirth a chance and he’s done horribly for her, it’s just an awful read.

      2. Not a Rucka fan…was gonna give it a shot though. Thanks for heads up, I value your opinion so I know it’s a good pass.

        1. Yeah, I’m likely going to pick up an issue for the potential flip but I’m probably not going to bother reading or buying beyond issue one myself.

  2. I love all the Jusko corner box covers. You could make a giant wall collage out of these in a room for very little money. If you’ve looked at how much the little 2016 marvel masterpieces trading cards are ($200 box for 36 cards) also done by joe jusko sell for, these are even cheaper and far nicer to display.

      1. Two up on UK Bay, one £14.95, one £15.95, both with a BIN, no sales yet. Two worst words in the work environment: training and meeting! Condolences.

  3. Is Heathen a good read? Or is the price reflective of small supply? Thinking of buying a copy but would love a good story if paying $15+.

        1. Me too but my reading list is so huge, I’ve been enjoying the trades myself to get more story in a sitting as the floppies I lose what’s going on month to month.

      1. I like buying the floppies but I always forget what happens month to month. It usually takes me a few pages before it all starts to click again. I’ve thought about taking quick notes of the highlights after reading a book so I can go back and read them a month later before i pick up the next issue.

  4. Anyone else notice that Astro City 41 has a printing error (repeating pages) in the regular cover edition but it is correct in the variant?
