Poyo's Picks of the Week for March 1, 2017

It’s that time again, each week we rush off to our local comic shops (well, most of us as I know a lot don’t have local shops near by so they do their order’in online) to snag our monthly pulls to read, snag the books we think can net us some more money so we can just do it all over again next week. Buy, Read, Read and Comment on CHU, Sell, Repeat.. it’s a rinse, recycle and repeat for most of us I’m sure.
So, let’s do the same thing we did last week.. but with different books.
DC/Vertigo
Savage Things #1 (Vertigo) – It’s a new Justin Jordan book, from Vertigo. Of course it’s a must check out for us Jordan fans. I expect low print runs on this, could be a potential hit.
Also I must mention the Death of Hawkman #6 Bill Sienkiewicz Variant. I knew right when I saw this at DC’s normal cover price, these were gonna sell out. Sienkiewicz has been hot lately, so grab’em and buy’em, then flip a few. They’re already selling above cover price and this is one of their not as popular characters, so expect lower print runs. This will likely be that steady $10-$20 book years from now. Honestly, cover A is pretty bad ass as well if you ask me.
Marvel
Star Wars #29 (Marvel) – Why not America #1? Well, there’s gonna be a billion of them and honestly, it just looks like another cash grab attempt at Marvel with a superhero no one really cares about all that much. I pick Star Wars, cause I love Yoda and this one has Yoda on it and in it. Yoda is awesome. Yoda is better than ‘Merica..
Small Publisher Pick
Extremity #1 (Image) – All my local shops, most of the employees have claimed they are looking forward to this new series. It’s a new Skybound book, so it has potential to get media attention since Kirkman now has his ties into the world of TV and Movies. Besides all that though, the book looks interesting. It’s a definite pick up to read and has that potential for a flip for profit. So grab 2 if you can, one to read, one to sell.
Of course can’t go without mentioning Walking Dead #165 which hits stands and we get to find out what is going to happen to Alexandria and will Negan and Rick continue to be partners, it certainly seems that way and I hope it actually continues, I think making them end up as partners in the apocalypse is even better than one of them dying and the other moving on.
Also, Nailbiter hits stands with it’s last issue of the series. It was a great run, stopping at #30 and I’m sure it’s not the last we’ll see of these characters.
I was going to pick Royal City #1 but I think Extremity will be the bigger book this week. Don’t get me wrong, Lemire is awesome, you should pick up all his stuff, but Royal City #1 is a more anticipated book from a more established writer/artist with a fan base, so it’s going to be a slow turn if it does end up heating up.
Sorry Rat Queens.. you had your chance, I’m not bothering.. It’s just never been the same without Roc and Wiebe went off and Wiebe’d himself with this book. It fell fast because of the poor writing. It started off so strong but it’s like he ran out of ideas really quick.
Indie Pick
Smoketown #1 (Scout Comics) – I love these types of stories that piece it all together from different views. From Scout Comics, this could be a hit and I expect small print run on these.
Description:

“From acclaimed writer Phillip Kennedy Johnson (Warlords of Appalachia, Last Sons of America), and introducing artist Scott Van Domelen, comes the first in an interconnecting series of chapters in the tradition of David Lapham’s Stray Bullets, Brubaker/Phillips’ Criminal, and Pulp Fiction. Each chapter explores the final days of a murdered soldier from a new perspective, each one exposing the criminal side of a small industrial Pennsylvania town. In Chapter One, ‘Killing Marcus,’ after a life-or-death situation, a battered wife and mother has until sunrise to cover up her husband’s murder, not knowing that her actions have set her up for a confrontation with some even more dangerous people.”

That’s all folks…

  1. You said nobody cared much about America Chavez. I love the character and have been a fan since she first popped-up in Joe Casey’s, “Vengeance,” and continued on to become even more popular with, “Young Avengers.” She’s fun!

    1. Fine, it’s probably a bias remark on my behalf.. I just can’t get into her.. but then again, I’m probably gonna start dropping more and more Marvel titles. I bought them to redeem their digital codes to read. Now that Marvel has stopped doing this, I’ll just wait 4-6 months for it to hit the Marvel Unlimited app where I have an account… I’m so far behind anyways, I have books I redeemed that are now in Marvel Unlimited where I can read and that only costs me $60 or so a year..

    2. I picked up her 1st appearance a couple weeks ago just in case she catches on. I personally haven’t read anything with her in it yet and don’t know squat about the character. She does seem fun, catchy look, cool name.

    3. I read “Vengeance”, but it wasnt very memorable. It was Young Avengers that endeared me to the character. Sadly, just like Poyo, I will be dropping a bunch of Marvel titles due to the end of the Free Digital Copies. I relied on those to be able to read some books on breaks at work, and without being able to do that, I’d never be able to keep up with my massive monthly reading. I’m getting Miss America, but the line for being dropped from my Marvel pull list is a lot steeper…

  2. I preordered 2 copies of Smoketown from my LCS and the spotlight by CHU a lil while back. And I agree, Poyo, cover A of DoHM does look badass. Unfortunately, my LCS, who orders EVERYTHING Marvel and DC put out, didn’t get one copy of this book. Not one.

  3. I’m looking forward to Smoketown.
Sometimes I wish I hadn’t canceled Star Wars. I hate forced crossovers though and that stupid Vader Down event was enough for me to jump off the book.

    1. Really.. I love Vader so it made it that much more special for me. I’m not big on most crossovers but since Vader and Star Wars were within the same timeline and are characters that really go together anyways, didn’t seem like the normal crossover where it’s just more annoying than anything.

      1. I really see crossovers as nothing but cheap money grabs. They force you to buy books you’re not otherwise buying ect (which is exactly their purpose). I keep saying I’m going to drop Batman when they do a crossover but I haven’t been able to do it yet. Plus darn it….I really want those lenticular covers.

        1. I pick up most if not all the Star Wars so crossovers welcome, I’m reading them anyways.
Star Wars is about to have another one.. just so you know.. just like Vader Down.. I think it’s going have it’s own #1 and then be mixed between Star Wars regular and Doctor Aphra as her and Luke team up on a mission.. 🙂

          1. I’ve dropped all of the Star Wars titles at this point. I won’t lie, I really don’t like Marvel and i’ve only got The Punisher on my regular pull list these days. So it doesn’t take much for me to drop a Marvel title. Forcing me to buy a book I wasn’t already buying (Darth Vader in this case) and I was done with them.

  4. I found 3 copies of the Death of Hawkman variant Cover B for cover. Whaa? My LCS never has anything. But today’s the day.

    1. I grabbed the only one found between two shops in my area. I have a feeling the other shop either yanked them or set some aside for people (which I doubt, usually hot books they won’t pull at the last minute for people, at least they never have for me the few times I tried).

  5. I think you are grossly underestimating America Chavez…..the character is so popular and fans have been wanting a solo for her for so long….her own creators made a rip off of her that is releasing from Image this spring/summer. They may have rescinded that comic since after their announcement Marvel went ahead and green lit her own solo due to the demand, but as far as I’m aware…it’s still on and was announced late summer last year. There are numerous main stream sites that have been reporting that fans want a solo over the last few years. Alot of the ladies my age (35) and younger Im friends with know who she is as she’s been featured in alot of the women’s magazines over the last few years. MTV even put out a cosplay guide a few years after her intro, and Urban Outfitters has a dedicated page to clothes they sell that can be used for cosplay or because her style is “chic” and very popular with the young crowd.
Now I do agree that this book is heavily specced on and I do t be goin crazy after ratio variants when I can just go snag some nicer and rarer variants featuring her on the cheap. My concern is they are treating this like Starbrand and Nightmask with cosmic hip diverse teens juggle being cosmic protectors and college students. They are doing it with Kamala too.

    1. There must be zero fans in my area.. both shops I visited had stacks and being so popular, the amount of time I spend at comic shops.. no one talks about her and none of the usual crowd was seeking her books out… Hmmm..
I’ll see it when I believe it. I wouldn’t spec on this book.. I wouldn’t be surprised to find them in the dollar bin a few months from now at one shop.

    2. It makes me wonder if there was already knock off made of her. A book titled ‘America’ by Overground Comics just launched this past spring….

      1. I just don’t see this “young crowd” rushing out to buy her comic every month.. the girls that shop at Urban Outfitters who happen to like her style of outfits aren’t gonna be swarming our local shops for America each month, let’s get realistic. MTV is about as irrelevant nowadays as the old flip style cell phone.. Music Television.. more like Crap Reality Television..
I’ll give Marvel some props though for trying hard to market her.. I just don’t see all of us old guys fondling over the new girl superhero with her new solo series.
