Wednesday Open Forum

Wednesday

Wednesday, the best day of the week, new comic book day. It is like your birthday in the middle of each week (well, one where you buy your own presents.)
We open things up to hear from you. A free for all.
The 125th edition of the open forum!
As always we also want to hear about your weekly pickups.
So, What were your pick ups?
What had disappeared off the shelves?
What was sitting on the shelves?
What back issue deals did you grab?

  1. I just ordered a bunch of the X-Men 1991 series issues. It’s supposed to come in tomorrow, so I guess that’s part of my weekly pick ups.
Definitely picking up Extremity and AmeriKarate tomorrow though.
Also has anyone here gotten anything graded from CGC lately, if so how much does it cost to get a modern comic graded?

    1. What issues of Xmen u getting? I love John Romita Jr’s run in Uncanny. Ooooh and of course Mark Silvestri’s. Those were fond memories.

      1. The Jim Lee and Chris Claremont run. The first 29 issues. These X-Men were the ones I grew up with as a kid. So it’ll be neat to have them in my PC.

  2. I already got a start on the week, I went by a B.A.M. earlier and picked up 2 copies each of Super Sons #1 fried pie variant and the $3.99 newstand edition.

  3. Getting Walking Dead, Avengers Venomized Cover, the Cho Harley variant, Paper Girls, Motor Girl.
Oh, and Lady Killer is back! I love this book!
Will grab Sienkiewicz Hawkman if I see it. The DC variants have been hit or miss at my lcs.
Pickups this week: a nice assortment of a dozen bronze age 52 pager giants – Adventure, Action, Superboy, & Jimmy Olsen (“Kirby says don’t ask! Just buy it!”) all in fine condition.

    1. Not sure Lady Killer back…(?) It’s not listed on the shipping list for March 1, but I do see it on March 8. I’d make a separate trip today if it was out early!

      1. I just checked and don’t see it listed anywhere. I don’t think it’s really back. I won’t make it to my comic shop for a few hours still but I think Shines was possibly going off of old information or got lucky and scored an early copy.

      2. No, the list I was looking at was wrong. It’s next week (8th).
It is such a damn good series. Guess Joelle Jones is behind, with the Supergirl series for DC, and tons of cover work.

  4. Midtown Pull Ups this week…
    Amerikarate
    Smoketown
    Rat Queens
    Royal City
    Extermity
    Champions
    Death of Hawkman
Super Sons #1 Cover E signed by Tomasi
    America – Hip Hop
    IVX
    Moon Knight
    Paper Girls
    Marry Me
    Atoll

  5. Can’t wait for the following books tomorrow:
Atoll #2 -Great white sharks and awesome artwork!
    Walking Dead #165
Savage Things #1-sounds like a cool concept
Death of Hawkman #6 (Bill Sienkiewicz Variant)
Was able to find some cool books hunting this week:
Groot #4 (1st appearance of Baby Groot)-2 copies for cover price
Wonder Woman #18 (1987)-Near Mint tough black cover 1st modern Circe for upcoming movie spec for $5
He-Man Thundercats #1 2nd prints-two more copies for cover, these sell fast!
Everyone have a great new comic book day tomorrow!

    1. My comic book store still has like 6 of those He-Man Thundercats #1 2nd prints. I’ve been wondering if I should pick them up to flip them.

      1. I have sold a couple of first prints at good prices. Double check the recently closed auctions on eBay as I think prices have come off on them
        Sent from my iPhone
        >

      2. Richard, I’ve found you need patience but I’ve sold 4 of these for $13 plus shipping to all different folks. It can take some time but they move. My only concern would be that the mini series has only one more issue to go before it ends.

      3. I sold a few of the Connecting cover sets of #1 for a decent profit when this book first hit the shelves. I haven’t seen any more in my area since.

      4. I sold one myself for $14.99 + shipping. Took some time but there are still people out there wanting and buying.

  6. I’ll be posting my pick ups, here, tomorrow when I get back from shops . But I wanted to give a shoutout to Kevin Fields at Frankies Comics. I have placed a few orders with them over the last two months and have kinda beeen a pain in the butt, trying to coordinate 4-5 different orders into one package to save on shipping. Kevin’s customer service has been A1, as his cooperation and communication have been top notch. He replies very quickly to any questions and is happy to accommodate. My order arrived and all the books were clean and sharp with outstanding protection for shipping. Props out to him and his people at Frankies. ?

    1. That’s funny b/c I sent him an order from his back issue sale last Monday and he told me that I needed to order more books in order to get the 10 for $10 deal. I did but I ended up having to pay full cost for those books (not the 10 for $10 deal). I emailed him to find out what’s happening and haven’t heard back from him in the last week – I have no idea if the order was processed or filled yet!
This reminds me that I need to follow up with him

  7. Usual just-woken-up-inanities-from-my-bed until I get on desktop to check what goodies are coming my way… ?
If anyone watches The Big Bang Theory, what’s the deal with never seeing Halley? Is it meant to be some/same joke like never seeing Mrs. Walowitz? If so it sucks, the crying baby noises are sodding annoying coz so fake sounding, at least in Lemony Snicket the actor doing Sunny’s voice sounded like a child ?. I wanna see a cute baby as well God dammit! Ok mini rant over. Waahhhhh!! ?

  8. So the wedding planning is going super well, Its so easy! I don’t know what people always complain about.
The house on the other hand…..not good.
Houses are going well above asking, and out of most regular peoples budgets (and our budget isn’t exactly low). The newest issue is that half of the sellers wont listen to offers until a specific date and then you’re competing with 5 other people and its a bidding war or they’re listing and then selling before you can even get to it to see. It’s bedlam!
Good thing my government is using their resources to put an end to ticket scalping instead of the housing crisis.
    This week my pickups are:
    Batman
    Clone Conspiracy
    Deadpool
    Green Lanterns
    Justice League
    Midnighter and Apollo
    Nailbiter
    Nightwing
    Silk
    Star Wars
    Superman
    Walking dead
Now if you’ll excuse me I’m going to go cry about houses now.

    1. It is like that here too. The neighborhood I live in is super-competitive and houses sell as soon as they are listed. It’s crazy. Average house in our market stays on like 2 days. We live near some very good schools.

    2. It’s sounds crazy but when competing like that you almost have to submit your offer with a personal letter and pull on the heart strings of a seller so ther hopefully choose your offer. Happens all the time. I live in LA in a hyper competitive market too. Many reasons why real estate bAck to 2008 levels of dumb
      Pull list includes-
      Extremity
The Dregs #2 – great read
      The Atoll #2
Death of Hawkman 6 – Sienkiwicz
Amerikarate – find out what hype is about
      Bullseye #2
      Maybe AmeRica #1 mckelvie variant

    3. The wedding part is easy because i’m sure your wife is doing all of the work lol! I hardly did anything for our wedding. My Wife and her mom did everything. I even complained at one point that it really didn’t feel like my wedding because I had zero say in anything. I did get married in my chuck Taylors (and tux). It was my small way of rebelling. My wife was supposed to get married in her red Chuck Taylors but her mom talked her out of it at the last minute.

      1. Lol I wish!!
I’ve been to every meeting and consultation!
I even picked and ordered and sent the save the dates! (Comic themed but not super hero, it basically looks like a wedding splash page)
I’ve had many vendors tell me I’m much more involved that most men (not my choice! ). I think it’s because it’s a small wedding with no real predetermined needs.

    4. My wife and I gave up on wedding planning when 1) we learned I could get 50% tuition at my law school if we were married, because she was a university employee; and 2) we almost broke up because wedding planning is a small insight into hell right here on earth. We fast-tracked that shit and got married 4 weeks later.

      1. That’s what the housing is doing to us. Sometimes it’s so stressful that I worry the wedding might not happen!

    5. I’ve heard that best part about getting married is…getting divorced! You never anyone fretting and worrying, mumbling to themselves ‘man, my divorce is just falling apart’. Lol

  9. Was able to grab
    Extremity #1 reg & variant
    Amerikarate #1

    Savage Things #1
Seven to Eternity Vol 1. TPB
The Hawkman #6 Sienkiewicz variant had a some spine damage and was priced at $20 so I passed on it.

        1. I was instantly jealous when I saw it. Then I remembered I have your address and know what time you go to work. Checking Expedia for flights now. Lol.

  10. Found a Couple of Hawkman 6 Sienkie at cover price!
    Walking dead 2
He man thunder 1 second print
    Extremity
    Fissure 1

  11. Well today I went back to the Shop where I have been eyeing a CGC 9.6 ASM #300, and it was still on the wall. They were asking $650 CDN. I made an offer of $600 CDN, flat, for the graded ASM and $50 store credit to pick out some other books. They took the offer. So i picked out an ASM #4 vol.3 NM $15 (1st Silk), an ASM #15 vol.4 X-23 homage variant $10, a Curse Words #1 Ashcan $10, Hook Jaw #1C $5 (to complete my Hook Jaw #1 set, ready to flip now) and a Superior Spidey #2 $10 (for my PC Spidey legacy). So, I paid $550 CDN for the 9.6 ASM 300, and I may be able to lower that cost if I can flip any of the other books i got with the credit, for a profit. Im happy. My other pick ups today were:
Atoll #2, x2 (1 for the PC, 1 to build a flip set)
    Smoketown #1, x3
    TWD #165
The Stuff of Legend Vol.5 #1
Savage Things #1, x2 ( I was only going to get 1, but I didnt see it some shops, it seemed under ordered to me)
    Extremity #1, 1 per store, $20 CDN
    Star Wars #29, reg and 40th x2
    Nightwing #16B
    Moon Knight #12
    Batman #18
Clone Conspiracy Omega #1, Granov Variant
    Back issue pick ups were:
JLA #1A, I really want to read something with Lobo in it
Frostbite #2 & #5, Im going to try this series after hearing good things from other CHU comments
Divinity III Stalinverse #1 Exclusive Nerd Block X-O Manowar Cat Cosplay Variant, $5, I have already flipped one for $20, so Im gonna try this one too
The Kitchen #2, $4, to be paired and flipped with the #1 that I already have.
So, I barely slept last night as I was giddy about my big purchase. The ASM 300 is the crown jewel of my PC. Its the image responsible for me reading my first comic back in ’89, and has been on my wish list for literally 28 years. Today was a good day for Jay Clue. 🙂

    1. I wanted to post a pic, but I am not a computer guy, and for the life of me, I can not figure out how to leave an image with my posts.

      1. Yeah, it’s just direct link to the image itself. No html tags or anything. See image below on format..

        1. Thanks, Jesus. When you do end up getting it, please let me know how much you end up paying. Eddie Brock is reuniting with the symbiote starting in issue #6 of the Venom series.

  12. Picked up:
Rat Queens 1 all three covers
Harley Quinn 15 Cho cover (1st Frank Cho Power Girl)
    Motor Girl 4
    Extremity 1
    Received in the mail:
    1) DC Super Pac A-3 (1973) 3-pack containing Wonder Woman 205: I made a reasonable best offer on 9.6 CBCS WW 205 on eBay, but the seller countered by raising the price by $20. Therefore, I picked this up instead. Now I need to decide if I want to open up this 44 year-old bagged set to slab the WW 205. BTW, the eBay seller lowered the price of the 9.6 book back down $20.
    2) Creepy Presents Berni Wrightson HC: CBLDF has these for sale with a signed bookplate. I wanted to pick up a Wrightson signature sooner than later due to his health.
    3) Marvel Comics Presents 85 signed by Sam Kieth and Jae Lee: This is Lee’s first published work. I picked this up in a trade.
    4) 2x Low 1 Newbury variant: I forgot I wanted these for my pc until Dakoit Caves posted about this earlier. Low is in my top 3 favorite current books along with Rat Queens and Saga. They are available cover + shipping at Newbury.
    5) DC Super-Stars (of Magic) 11: Found a second copy of Zatanna’s first solo book in a decent grade for $5.

  13. Picked up online:
America #1 reg & McKelvie variant
    Deadpool venomized
    Cosmic Scoundrels #1
    Savage Things #1
    Death of Hawkman #6 variant
    Royal City #1
    Smoketown #1
Amerikarate #1 reg. and Footloose cover
Super Sons, Catwoman, Kingpin – signed covers – Midtown

  14. Light week for me just grabbed an amerikarate 1 at the lcbs. Did order a marvel spotlight 5 this week tho which looks to fn+ to vf- ordered it Friday and the seller sent it parcel select even tho I paid 10$ for shipping.
For all sellers out there , it’s best to pony up the extra buck or 2 for priority especially on these big purchases. The longer it’s in transit the more likely damage can occur.

    1. Also sent my new mutants 87 and 98 to a friend going to eccc to get scribbled on by Todd McFarlane and rob Liefield and cgc graded.

  15. I haven’t seen any pictures yet, but I saw in Previews that there is a ‘classic’ Todd McFarlane variant for Venom #6. This might be one to keep an eye on.

    Couldn’t find Amerikarate.

    1. I think I landed every cover of Amerikarate.. 🙂
But one shop only had Cover A, around 10 copies and the other had around 12 copies, about 2 of each cover.

      1. My Lcs had 1 copy each today of the regular and the photo cover, so of course I picked up the one with side booby.
The art was a little off-putting for my tastes, but dang if the story didn’t read like one if those cheesy 80s drive in movies. I might come back next issue, see where it goes.

  17. Not much for me today, besides what is in my pullbox which I need to clean out soon.
    Royal City #1
H.Q. #15b I didn’t know that these were poly bagged with another comic
Savage Things #1 sold out, so I called my main Shop and told them to put one in my pullbox along with another copy of Royal City
    TWD #165
I like the cover b for Rat Queens, I stopped reading it a long time ago. I got a lot of organizing done last weekend like 2 longboxes, my new goal is to try to go through at least 10 comics a night or at least every other day so I won’t get so backed up.

  18. Man I couldn’t find any AmeriKarates or Death of Hawkman cover B at my two usual comic book shops. So since tomorrow is my day off, I’ll probably do some comic book hunting. Might as well try to find some back issues to some stuff as well.

  19. So far, Heathen #1 is still my favorite new book of 2017. I can’t put my finger on just one thing… just awesome in so many ways. Only one store within 20 miles of me (Miami) had any copies (2), though. Hearing the total print run was less than 13,000 (including the 3 variants — 1,500 red, 150 color, and 75 B&W).
I’ve read God Country 1 & 2 and respect that most people are loving it, but I don’t understand why. Just my 2-cents.

  20. Went to two comic shops today. I found a copy of AmeriKarate, one cover b of Hawkman (though it was 6 bucks), venomized covers of Doctor Strange as Deadpool. Still can’t seem to find any Harley Quinn 15 power girl variants. Seems like a bunch of shops didn’t receive their orders on it.

      1. I’ve had a few shops tell me they got shorted a bunch of comics this week from diamond. It was weird to hear that from a bunch of different shops, also seems like most of the shops have had to run through all kinds of hoops to qualify for those venomized covers.
Been trying to order all of them from midtown but it keeps giving me an error saying one or more items are out of stock, but it won’t tell me which ones are out of stock so boo

  21. Does anyone see the star wars anniversary covers in stores.i have ordered them online but the 3 stores i go to never have any of these covers out for sale.
