Picks of the Week One Year Ago Today! 4/27/16

What up you CHUligans? Hope everyone had a good week. I finally had time to go to my lcs and pick up my pulls from the last 6 weeks……that was a cheap trip. Man, it is crazy how many Image books these days are immediately going up in value and I am really looking forward to seeing where they stand a year later. Anyone read Plastic yet? WOW…. that was weird……and yet I can’t wait for #2 to come out. I knew that I had a warped taste in stories but I may have found a new level.
I’ll keep the intro short this week and get right to it! Tougher week for the guys. Out of the 100’s of issues released One Year Ago Today, very few held strong for a year.
Winners

Disney Darkwing Duck #1 – Anthony Pick
Original Value: $4 Current Value: $12
Gotta admit that Anthony is pretty solid at the kid comic picks. Joe must be advising him.

Image + #1 – Anthony Pick
Original Value: $2 Current Value: Sales at $3 – $4 on eBay but also still available at Midtown.
Some pretty shocking prices paid for issues #1 – 12 sold as a lot, but they seem to lower on individual sales of #1. Considering this is Negan and Lucille’s back story I am going to hang onto these for a while. Who am I kidding….I hang onto everything.
Luke Warm Picks

Old Man Logan Vol 2 #5 Cover B Variant Story Thus Far Cover – Mel Pick
Original Value: $4 Current Value: $5

Killbox #1 – Anthony Pick
Original Value: $4 Current Value: Not a ton of recent sales. Sold out at online retailers. For sale prices are all over the place from $3 -22.
This one was a quick flip winner where you could have double or tripled your money.

Killbox #1 Cover B Incentive Darick Robertson – Mel Pick
Original Value: $10 Current Value: No recent sales and sold out at retailers, another quick flip winner but long term has cooled off. Going for $10-15 on eBay.

Spider-Woman #6 J Scott Campbell Connecting Variant – Anthony Pick
Original Value: $4 Current Value: Still available at on line retailers
. Again as Anthony put it for all these JSC Connecting Covers, “A grower not a shower”.

Micronauts #1 – Anthony Pick
Original Value: $4 Current Value: Still available at on line retailers.
May be way past their prime here.

Sabretooth Dan #1 – Anthony Pick
Original Value: $4 Current Value: No recent sales. Sold out at online retailers. For sale prices are from $5 -25.
Scout is a solid publisher. Anything could happen here.

Camp Midnight GN – Anthony Pick
Original Value: $17 Current Value: Still available at Midtown, but to be fair, this one was labeled as one for the bookshelf.

Dr. Strange: Last Days of Magic #1 – Mel & Poyo Pick
Original Value: $6 Current Value: $6 Regular Covers available at Midtown. Variants are sold out.

Legend #1 – Anthony & Poyo Pick
Original Value: $4 Current Value: $4 Still available at Midtown
Misses

Harley Quinn (Vol 2) #27 Cover C Incentive Amanda Conner Variant Cover – Mel Pick
Original Value: $25 Current Value: $8
Always worth hanging onto Conner HQ variants. (EDITORS NOTE: It is Harley, riding a bear, holding a pic-a-nic basket (as Yogi the bear says) how could this not be a hit?)

Old Man Logan Vol 2 #5 Cover C Incentive Greg Hildebrandt Classic Variant Cover – Mel Pick
Original Value: $12 Current Value: $4

Unbeatable Squirrel Girl Vol 2 #7 Cover D Incentive Siya Oum Variant Cover – Mel Pick
Original Value: $20 Current Value: $13
Still an up and coming artist. Could be a slow burn.

    1. Yeah. Pretty much a lame week. They happen from time to time. I will say Killbox sold well when it first came out though.

  1. That Squirrel Girl might still see a reversal. Upcoming tv series can’t hurt. I still run into people that never heard of her.
And Siya Oum is an unsung talent. One big series away from stardom.
And try as they might, Hasbro should give up on Micronauts becoming a hit again. Unless they release a whole new line of toys, forget about it. Ditto for ROM. Just pulled #1s of both from the fifty cent bins to read, nothing wonderful.

    1. Rom is crossing over with Transformers coming up, not that it is a reason to get excited. I do love the old Rom action figure. I do love Micronauts but none of the series since they left Marvel have done much, not Image, not Boom….

      1. I tried to give M.A.S.K. reboot a chance from IDW and I just couldn’t get into it like when I was a kid.

  2. I have that Darkwing Duck Signed and sketched the artist James Silvani lives here in Maui, in the same little town as me. That Harley variant is a sore spot for me that’s the only 1:25 Conner variant I have so of course it’s the one that’s a dud so far.

      1. I try not to buy high dollar variants because so many of them fizzle out. It is always a kick to the gut when a book I paid $10 to $20 for is going for $4. Obviously the lower print ones keep their value, but with Harley’s popularity I am surprised any of her 1:25 variants are going so low. And I really expected her Gamestop Variant to be worth more than it is, since those were tough to get when they first came out. Meanwhile, Variants from Secret Invasion & House of M that used to be popular when they first came out are now going for $1 on eBay. I bought some just last week. One Freaking Dollar!!!

        1. Those game stops started out as one per store and then gamestop flooded all the stores with copies. I was getting $15-20 for them early on and now nothing. Thankfully I sold enough to cover what I didn’t sell….

      2. I’ll pay over cover for variants that I want for the PC, which I’m buying cause I like the artwork. But for most variants, I won’t pay over cover due to the fact that most will end up worthless over time as the demand dies quickly for them. It’s only extreme cases when a 1st appearance occurs or something else of importance the variant takes back off, etc.

  3. I really liked the artwork on Killbox more than the story. It was a unique style. Darkwing Duck I bought over a dozen copies of via pre-order, since I am a huge fan of DW. Really sad it was cancelled at #8. But the print run on these issues was So Low, I expect these to be hard to find in the future. I even got extras of the further issues, but not as much as I piled onto #1. Just selling two copies of #1 has already paid for nearly all of the DW I pre-ordered at half-cover-price, lol.

    1. I didn’t know DW got canceled, I think I dropped it from my pullbox at #6 or 7. Might as well pick up the rest of the issues I missed.

  4. Also..Great job once again .. I know these articles are tough to write ..so your work is greatly appreciated
