One Year Later: 5/18/16 Spec Review

By Shawn B. The One Year Later Investigator
What up CHUicide Squad!?! Shawn B. back with another One Year Later round up, where we take a look at all of the comics that Anthony, Mel and Poyo spec-ed on one year ago. Their specs turn out to be quick flips, slow burns, straight up misses, straight up winners and on and on. Sometimes they spec with their hearts out of their passion for comics. Sometimes they spec based on data. And sometimes they spec based off of the word on the street. Either way all of their specs appeal to a few or many collectors whether it is due to them having similar taste in writing or art or just an opportunity for a collector to flip a book and make money to “support their habit”. So, this is our weekly chance to take a look back at how some of our buys from a year ago are doing today.
A very light week from a year ago!
Winners

Superman American Alien #7 Jock Variant – Mel Pick
Original Value: $15 Current Value: $18
This cover was all the way up to $50 back in June 2016. Quicker Flipper!
Not Winners But You Never Knows

Archangel #1 – Anthony & Poyo Pick
Original Value: $5 Current Value: $7
Even the sub covers are selling for around $6.

Civil War II #0 Phil Noto Variant Cover – Mel Pick
Original Value: $10 Current Value: Still available at Midtown.
My opinion is that Phil Noto art will one day get the attention it deserves. I am buying one.

Dark Souls #1 2nd Print Alan Quah Variant – Anthony Pick
Original Value: $4 Current Value: Still available at Midtown.
Popular series. The first print did really well and sold out quickly, this one not so much.  Still a nice-looking cover and 2nd prints tend to be slow burns at times.

Black Road #1 2nd Print – Anthony Pick
Original Value: $4 Current Value: Still available at Midtown.
To quote Anthony a year ago, “Rarely does an Image comic go back to a second print anymore. So you know it is something special.” Boy a lot has changed in a year for Image releases.

Chum #1 – Anthony Pick
Original Value: $4 Current Value: Really a cool read though. It had the formula for a win: small print run, gritty drama, sharks, but it never caught on.  Still available at Midtown.
Misses

Haunted Mansion #3 Brian Crosby Variant – Mel Pick
Original Value: $15 Current Value: $10 Just a couple recent sales at $10. With copies for sale around $30 Surprising, based on the previous Crosby variants for this series. Copies of the #1 Crosby Variant have sold for around $40 and for sale up to $90.
Un-specced Winners

All-New Wolverine #8 – Mel should be happy, this one was not only T-shirt worthy, they actually made a T-shirt out of the cover
Original Value: $4 Current Value: $8

REM 8 #1
Original Value: $4 Current Value: $8

  1. Agreed about Phil Noto. He has such a smooth and classy style. One day he will be sought after. Until then I’m buying his variants on the cheap!

  2. I love Noto, I collect his stuff for my PC, not to spec. Been lucky won 2 collections on ebay nice and cheap

    1. Thanks! Trying to come up with something different every week but it’s really difficult so far. Hah! I was going to go with CHUniverse this week but then saw you were using it. Good one.

  3. I love Noto’s art! Back when he was on Birds Of Prey he used to do sketches at conventions for free. I went to several Cons he attended at the time, and got sketches of Black Canary, Oracle, & Cassandra Cain’s Batgirl.
