Comics Picks of the Week for Delivery on 6/7/17

Each week hundreds of new comics hit the stands, each with potential. We pick the ones we think have the best shot at heating up. Here are our picks of the week for delivery 6/7/17.
Kind of a big week. Lots of good books. I have two that are on the list that have caveats. Let’s get into the books:
Returning Favorites
Savage Things #4 – Justin Jordan is killing it with this spy/black ops/secret cabal book. Worth reading.
Extremity #4 – This has been a surprisingly good book. I didn’t think I was going to enjoy it but the story has been solid.
Paper Girls #15 – BKV rocks and this quirky book is an awesome read. It is all over the place, however, it does a nice job of tying up plot threads. Have you seen what the Signed Paper Girls #1 have been selling for?
Outcast #28 – Still enjoying this series even though many dropped off. The storyline of late has changed courses and has been very interesting.
Reborn #6 – Damn you Mark Millar and your hugely priced last issues. I have to get this one though. That’s how he draws you in.
Pestilence #2 – Damn good first issue that sells for above cover. Expect a drop on print runs of the second issue and this could be a $10 book by the weekend.
Red Ten #9 – I love this Comixtribe that critics call Justice League meets Clue! I just wish it came out more frequently. If you do not mind a wait, it is worth the read.
The One With the Walking and the Dead
Walking Dead #168 – Two covers this week, regular and pride month. Grab the one that strikes you. Looks like Negan is taking the Survivors back and there could be some repercussions for Rick.
The No Brainer
Heathen #4 1:5 Variant – These have been selling well, and surprisingly hard to get. This issue should be no different. Price already starting at $15 and up on eBay

Attack of the Killer B Covers
Wonder Woman Steve Trevor #1 B cover – Yanick Paquette kills this cover. B covers from DC have been selling out and are in demand. This one is sold out at Midtown already.
The One in the News
Batman #24 – The press started leaking out today that Batman will ask Catwoman to marry him…. So there could be a run on this issue.
The Media Tie-in
Game Of Thrones Clash Of Kings #1 – Game of Thrones has a huge following. Good cross over potential. There hasn’t been a Game of Thrones comic in a while. The George RR Martin Signed Variant is the one to get if you can find it.
The Cover of the Week

Darth Vader #1 Mark Brooks Variant – one of two books this week with a caveat. First off, it is an amazing homage cover done in the pulp magazine style I love. The downside is there are multiple store variants, each with a minimum of 3,000 copies which each qualify for 60 ratio variants.  Throw in another 300,000 copies that probably have sold and we are talking a lot of  copies of the 1:50 variant. Buy for the art, but the price could come down as people try to sell.
The Variant of the Week
Zombies Assemble #2 Greg Horn Variant – Beautiful cover by Greg Horn with a zombified Black Widow in the shadows.
Small Press Gem
GWAR Orgasmageddon #1 – Another cross over book. Gwar has their fans and their fans will spend money on Gwar items. I will have some signed copies of this later in the week. Signed by the writer and band members. It is going to be awesome.
Small Press Pick of the Week
Unsound #1 – New Cullen Bunn book who is king of getting optioned. New creepy series without too many store variants. The Comic Mint had a good looking one that features a cover of one of the crazies in the book, a real cool and weird cover.
The Pick of the Week
Babyteeth #1 – This is the second book with a caveat. It is a great read by a writer with a rising star. Trust me when I say, issue 2 is even better than the first. The caveat is that retailers were ahead of the game on this one, including the 20 store variants that came out. No one was caught sleeping so there should be plenty of copies out there which prevents this from shooting up too high. Stick to the Regular cover and the Torque variant as your safest bets. Still expect $10 cover prices shortly after release.
Thats it for this week, if you haven’t seen it make sure to check out the New Comic Spec Review Video for this week below:

  1. Bruce and Selina, married? Yeah.. he can ask all he wants, not gonna happen. Buy a few extra. flip to suckers who missed out, use money to buy other books. 🙂

    1. You forgot to add “take over the world”. I am saving up to buy new black rims for my new SUV (don’t want o call it a cross over. Don’t want to call it a cross over)

      1. Black rims? Sweet.. we’re gonna pick up all kinds of girls in NYCC in that dope ride of yours..

    2. Remember all the buzz when Catwoman was revealed to be bisexual toward the end of the New52? That lasted 10 issues, and barely held any value. I don’t see Batman & Catwoman getting married; that just sounds like something out of the hokey Silver Age Batman Family affairs. If for whatever entertaining storyline necessity of Tom King that they did get married, I don’t see it lasting…

  2. Anthony… do you have a list (even partial) of all of those Darth VADER #1 store variants? I’m not really seeing many out there. Was the 100 stores doing a variant an exaggerated comment? There’s only 15 listings for the Brooks 1:50 the night before release, so I assumed there would be a ton of listings in order for retailers to start dumping them as early as possible.

    1. I just went through 500-600 listings on ebay and only saw a couple Darth Vader #1 store variants for the volume 1 series. Started at $0.01 and went to $49.99 a copy listings.
Just trying to gauge the potential flood of Vader #1 Brooks variants as well, but if there are supposed to be 100 different stores doing a variant, I figured ebay would be loaded with them like when Harley #1 and Batman #1 rebirth came out. I haven’t seen anyone promoting Darth Vader #1 store variants in the usual online places either.
      I’m stumped. Lol

      1. I think he’s exaggerating the 100 store variants. I think volume 1 had around 18 total variants if I recall correctly. I’m guessing this volume will be that or slightly less. The print run on this will still exceed 100k though, which puts the number of Brooks variants at least around 2k or more, if the print run exceeds 100k..

      2. I’m going to have to take the fall for the disinformation here guys. I reported that 100 figure in a text to Anthony like a month and a half ago.
I don’t remember entirely but it was a hyperbolic report that I didn’t fact check back when i read it. Sorry Tony. Sorry CHU. Tony has to do more mah now and we all hate math.

  3. Can i go ahead and throw my hat in for a signed gwar comic when that happens? That is by far the coolest book of the week.

    1. And some advice to any of your readers…always, always, always wear white to a gwar show. Instant souvenir.

  4. I hadn’t read The Red Ten, but got the Oxymoron series and liked it, so I’ve started seeking them out. Does anyone know how to tell apart the 3 printings of The Red Ten#1? I’ve seen it listed as 1st, 2nd, & 3rd Print; but later found that there is an original 1st print run and then a year later or so they re-released a 1st print, then did a 2nd print, when ComixTribe was officially in business as a publisher. But looking at the copies I’ve seen online, they all look the same, front & back; and I haven’t found any conversations about it online. They all appear to have the same cover, but I would assume the two different 1st Prints must have a different interior date or a different interior advertisement or back cover? If anyone knows, fill me in!

    1. I only have the first ComixTribe print. To tell the difference the first print says nothing. I believe the 2nd edition says first diamond edition on the back cover or inside the front cover. The 2nd print says 2nd print.

      1. I just checked exactly what mine says. On the inside front cover it says “1st printing” and is dated 2011. I don’t see anything relating to Diamond or to it being a “Diamond Edition” on the inside or back cover. Do you know if the first Diamond edition had a UPC barcode on the book?
