One Year Later: 6/8/16 Spec Review

What up CHUnderbolts!?! I know I am really stretching it with CHUnderbolts but it is pretty hard to come up with a new one every week so please bear with my corniness. Any suggestions for future uses of CHU in comic related words please chime in below. I think I only have around 40+ more to think of to have a freshie every week of the year. HAH!
Shawn B. back with another One Year Later round up, where we take a look at some of the comics that Anthony, Mel and Poyo spec-ed on one year ago. Their specs turn out to be quick flips, slow burns, straight up misses, straight up winners and on and on. Sometimes they spec with their hearts out of their passion for comics. Sometimes they spec based on data. And sometimes they spec based off the word on the street. Either way, all their specs appeal to a few or many collectors whether it is due to them having similar taste in writing or art, or just an opportunity for a collector to flip a book and make money to “support their habit”. So, this is our weekly chance to look back at how some of our buys from a year ago are doing today.
Winners

New Avengers #12 Denys Cowan Black Panther 50th Anniversary Variant Cover – Mel Pick
Original Value: $15 Current Value: $20+
Not many of the Black Panther Anniversary Variants have done as well as I personally would have liked but this one is still hanging tough and hopefully you got it on the cheap.

Wonder Woman Rebirth #1 Stanley Artgerm Lau Variant – Mel, Poyo & Anthony Pick
Original Value: $3 Current Value: $9
People are still digging this cover a year later. I agree with the guys that on average the DC B Cover Variants have been pretty solid so far.
Near Misses

Ghoul Scouts Night of The Unliving Undead #1 – Anthony Pick
Original Value: $4 Current Value: Still available at multiple on line retailers.

Norman #1 – Anthony & Poyo Pick
Original Value: $4 Current Value: Sets are the way to go to get this on the cheap but individual copies of both covers of #1 are going for $4 to $12.
Seems like one to still hang onto for a while. I do know that this issue was going for $8 up until August of last year. Quick Flip for 2 months.

The Fix #1 Third Printing – Anthony, Mel & Poyo Pick
Original Value: $4 Current Value: No recent sales and sold out at on line retailers. Copies for sale on eBay for $4-9.

Civil War II: Amazing Spider-Man #1 Phil Noto Variant – Mel Pick
Original Value: $12 Current Value: $12 Still available at Midtown.
I like Noto art.
Misses

Civil War II: Gods of War #1 Phil Noto Variant – Mel Pick
Original Value: $10 Current Value: $4
Again surprising to me considering it’s Phil Noto. I feel like the toned-down coloring of his work sometimes masks how good his art is, though some may say it is fitting for his style.
Unspecced Winners

The Flash: Rebirth #1
Original Value: $3 Current Value: $10-15
First appearance of Godspeed

Joyride #1 Second Printing
Original Value: $4 Current Value: $12
First printing started out hot but has recently fizzled to cover price or below. This 2nd printing had a low print run per usual and has held value. Was going for $30 for a while after release.

  1. League of chusassins, chustice league, the new chutants chufenders, chuvengers, choom patrol, inchumans, legion of chuper heroes, teenage chutant ninja turtles, masters of the chino verse. I could go all day

  2. I think that Flash Rebirth is a hold….. If Godspeed ever makes it to the screen, it’s gonna be a key for sure. Can’t recall how many I have, but it’s more than a couple.

      1. I believe it was Flash Rebirth #1…. Appeared as a vision Barry had in issue #1….. Then Flash #1 picks up the whole story line of him st along the speed force from all the other speedsters that gained it during the speed force storm.

      2. Anthony, yes, the one shot. That’s what I meant by Flash Rebirth #1… I know all the DC titles now have Rebirth on top but I just call them by their names without Rebirth in the name. So if you ever see me refer to Rebirth in the title name, I’m referring to the one shots. Now you know and knowing is half the battle.. Yeah!
