Wednesday Open Forum

Wednesday

Wednesday, the best day of the week, new comic book day. It is like your birthday in the middle of each week (well, one where you buy your own presents.)
We open things up to hear from you. A free for all.
The 141st edition of the open forum!
Solar Flare books have started to ship. Sent out more than half today with the rest going out tomorrow. Thanks to everyone who ordered. The print run on these will be less than 250. We got 250 in and about 80 of them were damaged in shipping. So those are being sent back to Scout to be destroyed. Needless to say, the 170 print run on these will be a lot sweeter.
As always we also want to hear about your weekly pickups.
So, What were your pick ups?
What had disappeared off the shelves?
What was sitting on the shelves?
What back issue deals did you grab?

  1. Looking forward to the Solar Flare #1! It’s a good read for those who haven’t tried it yet. Not sure what I’ll pick up tomorrow, but this week so far picked up a few Hulk #234. With Quasar rumors starting up a couple of weeks ago, his first appearance in Captain America #217 has already started to climb. Hulk 234 is when Wendell Vaughn changes his name to Quasar. It can still be found pretty cheap and if Quasar does start making movie appearances the book has room to grow. Right now, low risk.
Also picked up a Demon #1 from 1972. If Justice League Dark is made Demon may be in it. That and it is a Kirby book I always wanted. Prices on this have always crept up little by little. I just wanted to finally get this one out of the way… A just in case kind of thing.

  2. I wonder if the Thor 20 with the 337 cover swipe will be a bigger seller than usual tomorrow? I know I want it, even though it’s been done before. Or maybe it gives 337 a little bump, who knows.
That’s an undervalued book and one of the all time greats IMO.
Side note, I don’t think it comes out this week but the main Secret Empire event, I’m just gonna say it. It’s phenomenal and I know everyone has event fatigue with marvel including myself. But wow it’s really good. The book from last week (4?), with Ultron/Pym was outstanding. Loved the random “kiss the overlord” apron.
It seems like the Marvel books in general are getting better as of very recently. I can’t help but think it coincides with the supposed steps they are taking to getting back to basics.
The return of box corner art is one cool example. I applaud the return of that.
They used to do such great stuff with those. Sometimes humorous too.

    1. I’m already on that. Picked up Venomized covers for each Edge of Venomverse issues coming up: Wolverine, Gwenpool, Ghost Rider, Old Man Logan, and Deadpool!

    2. Ha. You know what is funny, I picked up a 9.6 CGC for $19 plus shipping. I couldn’t buy the book and pay for the grading at that price.

  3. I’ve got an extra Batman 24 regular and a Newsstand copy. Already got a nice sale on my A&B set, and want to sell one of the extra copies while they’re hot. I can’t decide which one the keep! Both are in NM condition. Any suggestions?

  4. Definite pickups will be Peter Parker Spectacular Spider-man #1 (just now catching the whole stain on the shirt hero mock on the regular cover) and Shirtless Bear Fighter.
One awesome pickup I had today was obtaining 3 copies of Batman 24 1st print at cover cost. I missed the the opportunity when it first came out and after searching high and low in all the LCSs across the county and several other chains I found a stack of them hiding at good ole B-A-M (3rd one I had checked).

  5. Picking up:
Shaolin Cowboy 3 (both covers: I’m a huge Aragones fan and recommend picking up Mad 76, his first published work, whenever you see them)
    I Hate Fairyland 13 (cover B)
God Country 6 (finally got around to reading 1-5)
    Maybe:
Head Lopper 6 (I want to like this, I really do, but something about it just doesn’t do it for me)
Lobo Road Runner Special (Kelley Jones is the heir apparent to Bernie Wrightson, just imagine if this were drawn by Biz)
Picked up at a local swap for $1 except Hellblazer:
Hellblazer 1 (couldn’t pass it up at $10)
Supergirl 8 (vs. Power Girl cover)
    RASL 1 (reg cover)
    Women 1-5 (Sam Kieth)
Tank Girl Full Circle 1-5 (Same Kieth)

  6. Hello again everyone!
I’m slowly starting to catch up on my reading. Still behind, but getting close to being almost caught up! I try to stay up to date because if I get too far behind, I’ll literally NEVER catch up!
The good news is that I’m all settled in the new house’s top two floors! Now to start the basement, which is the hard part because I have to assemble all of my new shelving for short-box storage and redisplay all of my collectables. I think it will take a few weeks before I’m done.
Got the new 65 inch TV up on the wall though, holy smokes is it big! I don’t know how I watched TV before!
Anyways, on to what you might actually care about!
    This week I’m getting:
    All-Star Batman
    Batman
    Green Lanterns
    I Hate Fairyland
    Invincible
    Justice League
    Nightwing
    Spectacular Spider-Man
    Plastic
    Royals
    Shirtless Bear Fighter
    Darth Vader
    Superman
    Thor
    Wild Storm
    This is all.

  7. Happy Wednesday!
    Pick up this week:
God Country #6 (sorry to see this end, hopefully Cates has a second storyline that will get rolled out soon!)
Batman #24 1st print Sale variant for cover price
    Batman #24 2nd print
Darth Vader #2 (Del Mundo variant)
    Old Guard #5
Plastic #3 (with God Country going away, this is quickly becoming one of my favorite reads)
    September Mourning #1
No PC pick ups this week.
A follow up note, I’m also really enjoying Secret Empire. Was able to re-read #0-#4 last week and it was a fun read. Really liked #4 with Ultron and the back and forth with Namor. Can’t wait to see how this ends.

  8. Midtown has Jimmy’s Bastards #1 (Midtown variant) signed by Garth Ennis and Russ Braun for $10, if anyone’s interested. One per customer.

    1. Also I’m picking up
      Harley Quinn 22 (Cho cover)
      Peter Parker 1 (Deodato cover)
      Old Guard 5
      September Mourning 1
      Shirtless Bear Fighter 1
      Grrl Scouts-Magic Socks 2
      The Chair 1
Also snagged 3 copies of Batman 24 newsstand at Barnes and Noble

  9. No nude Beariant, Nick Fury variant, or other incentives to resell today at the LCS. I left empty-handed.
I also looks like I won’t be getting the Mattina teaser variant next week for venomverse
Having said that, I had a stellar last couple weeks with Renew Your Vows Crain variant at cover, Spawn Thank You variant at cover, and some J Scott Campbell Secret Empire stuff at cover.
    So, I can’t complain.

    1. At some point you have to look yourself in the mirror for shelling out $50 for a “dong” variant. For those Shirtless Bear variant buyers.

      1. Can’t wait for Marvel’s month of dong variants, followed by venomized dong variants, followed by Mary Jane dong variants. You will all go broke!!!

      2. I passed on the pixelated dong Variant because of the price. I wanted it for the flip but there was no “meat on the bone” as they say at the price that my LCS had them at.

  10. Today I picked up Black Hammer (both covers), God Country, September Mourning, Darth Vader Del Mundo variant, Spectacular Spider-Man Deodato B&W sketch variant, Batman and All Star Batman … really liking Black Hammer and looking forward (and not at the same time) to the final God Country issue, but at least there’s still Redneck and Babyteeth to continue feeding my D. Cates reading appetite! … is it just me or would God Country lend itself really well to a movie?

  11. Black Hammer #10(Lemire cover)
Britannia We Who Are About To Die #3(B cover)
    Crosswind #1(gold foil cover)
    Doctor Strange #22(Mary Jane cover)
    God Country #6(Zaino cover)
    Mighty Thor #20(Mary Jane cover)
    The Old Guard #5
Peter Parker: The Spectacular Spiderman #1(Deodato cover)
    Royal City #4
    Shirtless Bear-Fighter #1
    Star Trek #9
Star Wars Darth Maul #4(Francavilla cover)
