One Year Later: 6/29/16 Spec Review

What up CHUncanny X-Men!?! Shawn B. back with another One Year Later round up, where we take a look at some of the comics that Anthony, Mel and Poyo specced on one year ago. Their specs turn out to be quick flips, slow burns, straight up misses, straight up winners and on and on. Sometimes they spec with their hearts out of their passion for comics. Sometimes they spec based on data. And sometimes they spec based off the word on the street. Either way, all their specs appeal to a few or many collectors whether it is due to them having similar taste in writing or art, or just an opportunity for a collector to flip a book and make money to “support their habit”. So, this is our weekly chance to look back at how some of our buys from a year ago are doing today.
Winners

Uncanny Inhumans #11 Regular Cover – Anthony & Poyo Pick
Original Value: $4 Current Value: $6
The hype on Mosaic has died down but you could have easily double or tripled your money with a quick flip early on.

Uncanny Inhumans #11 Yasmine Putri Variant – Mel, Poyo & Anthony Pick
Original Value: $15 Current Value: $32
I am sure I will get some feedback on these numbers. But based on sales in the last 90 days this is the average. That being said, there are copies for sale now for $60 – 125. If you got this at the original value or cheaper and did a quick flip you could have made over $100 on the sale.

Hillbilly #1 – Anthony & Poyo Pick

Still holding strong a year later…..I can’t freaking believe it’s been a full year since this came out!
Misses

Black Panther #3 Kyle Baker Variant – Mel Pick

I wasn’t feeling this one either to be honest.

Haunted Mansion #4 Kelly Jones Variant – Mel Pick

Copies for sale on eBay for $10-25. If you were able to get it at a low price originally, a quick flip could have made you something.

      1. Yeah, every other month is good with me as well. It’s when there is 3+ months between issues or when they’re inconsistent.. 3 issues in 3 months, then 6 months later a 4th issue…. or a year later we see 3 more issues, etc, I start having issues with really big gaps and or inconsistent gaps.

      2. At least it’s not like Afterlife with Archie with the delays. I’m about ready to give up on that series.

        1. You haven’t already. I gave up on it long ago myself. I love Francavilla but man…. It feels like it’s been years since the last issue was released.

      3. I talked to Francavilla at Heroes Con. He said Afterlife with Archie is ending at #12. I don’t get why Archie doesn’t move forward with a new creative team. It really says something that people are still clinging to this book, even after getting only 1 issue per year. And so far they have only scratched the surface of the world as a whole, since most issues have been side stories, flashbacks, or focused on specific characters. Now that “Riverdale” is a hit, if the writer is too busy, he can pass the reigns over to someone else, and if Francavilla adds to the delays, he could easily do just covers, or even partial interiors (did you see how seamlessly he alternated with Greg Smallwood on Moon Knight?), with another dark & gritty artist on interiors. Do you guys think Archie will plan a bloodbath for issue#12 to give a firm ending to the characters; or do they still have one foot in the door in case they do decide to continue with this universe?

  1. I think Hillbilly is a sleeping giant. Eventually a wider audience will notice this book and it’ll take off big. An excellent comic with great art and story. Bi-monthly works fine for me. Like Anthony said, Powell has a few series running along with this one (Spookhouse, Chimichanga), plus covers for various publishers.

  2. Another great analysis Shawn, thanks writing these up. tip of my hat to you in the opener for my con article 😉 Glad i picked up Hillbilly, keeping that one for the long haul

  3. Snagged a copy of the Uncanny Inhumans #11 Putri variant for $6, listed it in car, and sold it for $180 before I left the parking lot. Sometimes it’s just hype.

    1. Yeah, I regret not flipping mine. I was gambling on long term potential. So I’m gonna hold still…. I have nothing to lose now at this point.

      1. Those are the books that sting the most. The ones you shoulda sold. I’m okay with never owning a book that heats up. I’m also okay with selling a book to early as long as a profit is made when it was sold. but the ones that were hot and were kept til cold, they suck. Having that physical reminder of lost potential profit is quite irksome. There is always hope I suppose.

  4. I got burned on and uncanny inhumans #11 regular cover. I got a sob story that a guy needed it for his daughters birthday present. So I gave him a deal on it. He said it arrived damaged, he sent me pictures. I told him that’s how I got it from LCS and he said he had 9 others and they didn’t look like that. I told him to keep it and refunded him the $. Lesson learned. NEVER AGAIN EBAY!!!

    1. I have been having a shitty month on eBay. Great sales but douche bag buyers (a couple not all) that has ruined me and I want to take a break.

      1. Yeah and Craigslist isn’t any better. They always wanna lowball you. Saying that I’m asking to much for a book. So yeah no Craigslist for me. We should have an open auction here at CHU lol.

      2. Jesus, that is shitty—sorry to hear about that. Since there are a lot of eBayers—buying and selling both that read your site, there should be some way to “share” blocked email/eBay addresses to minimize the sham or d-bag buyers. I know you cannot do it on this site, but boy, would that be a useful tool. I would contribute my own list of course…..

  5. I love Hillbilly and I’m always anxiously awaiting each preordered issue to arrive. I agree on it as being a sleeping giant. Regardless, it’s my top 3 of books I currently read and has been since I took a chance on it when the first issue dropped.

  6. Someday when I have time (which seems to get more fleeting the older I get), I need to inventory the books I have been setting aside for speculation. I think I have copies of Hillbilly#1 & Monstress#1 in my stockpile, but I lose track of single Indy books so easily here, and it’s a chore to dig just to see if I have something…
