One Year Later: Spec Review for 8/17/16

By Shawn B. the One Year Later Investigator
What up CHU!?! Shawn B. back with another One Year Later round up, where we take a look at some of the comics that Anthony, Mel and Poyo specced on one year ago. Their specs turn out to be quick flips, slow burns, straight up misses, straight up winners and on and on. Sometimes they spec with their hearts out of their passion for comics. Sometimes they spec based on data. And sometimes they spec based off the word on the street. Either way, all their specs appeal to a few or many collectors whether it is due to them having similar taste in writing or art, or just an opportunity for a collector to flip a book and make money to “support their habit”. So, this is our weekly chance to look back at how some of our buys from a year ago are doing today.
Winners

Spawn Kills Everyone #1 Variant Liana Hee Cover – Mel Pick
Original Value: $4 Current Value: $10
Out of the 3 main covers for this issue this one is doing the best a year later. Nice pick Mel.
Near Misses

Suicide Squad #1 Variant Lee Bermejo Cover – Mel & Poyo Pick
Original Value: $3 Current Value: $5
Still lots of recent sales going on for this bad ass cover. I only stuck it in the Near Misses section because one on-line retailer still has two copies at cover price.

Supergirl Rebirth #1 Variant Adam Hughes Cover – Mel, Poyo & Anthony Pick
Original Value: $3 Current Value: $3 Still available at multiple on-line retailers.
A quick flip could have gained you a buck or two. I believe this will be a slow profitable burn. (Editors Note: I did a ton of these double signed by Adam Hughes and Steve Orlando. I sold a bunch of 9.8 graded, a few 9.6 graded, and one 9.4 graded, and even with having several left over, still doubled my money on these after grading fees. – Anthony)

Briggs Land #1 – Anthony & Poyo Pick
Original Value: $4 Current Value: $4 Still available at multiple on-line retailers.
Great read. Optioned by AMC. Though not raising in value there is a ton of sales activity on this one. Keep what you have. Buy up more. Buy your first copy. Whatever. In a couple years when we start hearing about this being in production it will heat up.
Misses

Uncanny Avengers #12 Jeff Dekal Marvel Tsum Tsum Takeover Cover – Mel Pick
Original Value: $4 Current Value: $4 Still available at multiple on-line retailers.
Not a ton of action on these Tsum Tsum covers.

Harley Quinn #2 Variant Bill Sienkiewicz Cover – Mel Pick
Original Value: $3 Current Value: $3 Still available at multiple on-line retailers.
Heavily printed. In my humble opinion if this(and many other DC Rebirth B Covers) were a ratio variant it’d be hot. Could be a slow burn. Ironically Harley is showing side view of her rear, and it took less for Frank Cho to get the boot from Wonder Woman B Covers.

Captain America: Sam Wilson #12 Variant Tula Lotay Black Panther Variant – Poyo Pick
Original Value: $4 Current Value: $4 Still available at multiple on-line retailers.
Cool cover though.

  1. Thanks for reading everyone. It is tedious but I enjoy it!
The results certainly prove that speccing is difficult, prices fluctuate a ton and if you’re a flipper you’re often better off selling early. You can’t lose if you buy what you like.

  2. Thanks for this always informative & enjoyable regular post Shawn. Wasn’t Flipper a celebrity dolphin from the sixties though !? 😉

      1. That’s my life nowadays.. Before I’m ready to sit and watch TV, I’m ready for bed. I’ll probably watch this about a year from now, I still haven’t even watched season 2 of Daredevil.

        1. That’s me when I do turn the TV on…. I just find the Simpsons, Law & Order or Big Bang reruns cause I know I’m gonna fall asleep in at least a half hour. I never start new shows I wanna watch cause I would never finish them…
