Poyo's Picks for August 23rd, 2017

What a week for comics eh? There’s just not a whole lot going on this week for the most part. Maybe I should just skip this week but we don’t want to make Anthony mad. So here we go.. I’m gonna do my best, not to please you all but make the boss man happy.
DC/Vertigo Pick
Batgirl #14 (DC) – While everyone is trying to secure their copy of the Batman Shadow Mattina variant, I think some will be overlooking this awesome Middleton variant, who’s been knocking them out of the park in my opinion. I don’t even read Batgirl but I’ve been picking these up for Middleton’s artwork.
Marvel Pick
Weapon X #7 (Marvel) – Hands down already a winner since it’s a new Weapon H story line. Sold out online at most retailers. Grab it, buy it, flip it. Plus the cover art is pretty sweet if you ask me.
If you’re out of touch with CHU updates, Anthony already spilled the beans on the Secret Empire #9 character blackout that was Top Secret. With a lot of the issues ending with anti-climatic endings, I don’t expect much else to go down spec and heat wise until possibly the last issue for something major to occur in the series. Even then, if the story ever makes it to the screen, everyone will want issue #1 anyways..
Small Publisher Pick
Nothing but reader picks this week. If you haven’t jumped on the Black Hammer bandwagon, do it. Pick up the trades, then buy up the back issues and this weeks issue Black Hammer #12 to catch up. It’s such a great read.
Another read is Shirtless Bear Fighter. So ridiculous its hilarious. It’s been a great read so far. Issue #3 hits stands this Wednesday.
Pickup Redneck #5 from Donny Cates as well. It’s a great read. If you aren’t reading it, then get outta here, you don’t belong on a comic book related website.
The last small pub pick is X-O Manowar. Matt Kindt is awesome. So do yourself a favor and pick up this new volume and this weeks issue if you want some enjoyable comic reading time.
Indie Pick (It’s both a pick and avoid.. yes, I can do that, this is my article)
Last Hunt #1 (Amigo) – I’m not a huge fan for Amigo books. They use cheap inks that seem to always run or smear. At least my local shop always seems to get the crap of the bunch, if there is any in better condition out there. Besides that, these heat up but lose heat quick if they do heat up. This one is sold out online, expect a minuscule print run so if you find them, grab a copy. If it heats up, dump it quick before it’s too late or you’ll find yourself with an Amigo book you end up dropping off at half price books for a fraction of what you paid just to make space for more books that are actually worth holding onto. Hopefully it’s a good read though.
With that said, I’m going to include the Last Hunt in this weeks Picks to Avoid as well. It’s a good candidate. It’s that love hate type book. If you can’t find it at cover price or cheaper on release day, avoid any hyped up prices cause it will certainly die sooner rather than later.
Also Ales Kot has Generation Gone #2 out. I’m just gonna tell you to avoid this book. He seems to start off hot with his new titles but it always seems like his books end up nowhere and or lost.
That’s all I got this week, love it, hate it, I don’t care. Tell us what you’re spec’ing on or picking up.

  1. I have to agree with the reader picks. Redneck is REALLY good!!! And I cant live without my Black Hammer – Awesome reads!!

  2. The only Amigo books that I like to pick up is anything writen by El Torres. Even if they heat up or not, you are stuck reading one heck of a story.

    1. I really liked Straitjacket. Can’t recall his last one he put out but I didn’t even bother. My local shop has horrible luck getting Amigo books, they’re always damaged it seems.

      1. I think the damage stems from being packed, shipped, unpacked, inspected, re-packed and shipped again at least 3 times in order to get to the U.S. market. Those books travel a long ways to get here….

        1. Yeah. But it also seems some of their covers the ink seems to bleed or smear from one comic to the next while stacked. It’s hard to find an Amigo book without any scuffs on it if they’re not all dinged up.

      2. I think it’s all the luck of the draw on Amigo books. The only one that I have gotten ink bleed is on straight Jacket #2. All other ones come in NM or so. I was finally able to find Suicide Forest from IDW and man that books is F*#&en GOOD!!!!! Really nice twist to the ending. I haven’t gotten the reprint from Amigo comics though.

  3. Great post, but I would take issue with you saying Kot’s books end up nowhere or lost. “Zero,” started strong and ended in a weird-but-still-satisfying way. I will agree he sometimes goes way off the rails though. “Wolf,” started out so promising and kind of fizzled.

    1. True, Zero was the best of his books so far. Wolf was terrible, I didn’t last through the first book from what I recall.

    2. The potential apparent at the beginning of the Zero series was never realized. I mean, seriously, William S. Burroughs was the main character for an entire issue of a war comic? That’s a certifiable mess unless it’s handled by a genius (which Ales is not.)
      BoyKot stays in effect.

      1. Yup.. BoyKot for sure. Mr. Kot is what I like to refer to as a Wieber.. he goes off and Wiebe’s himself and his books. Just like Kurtis J. Wiebe, the master Wieber.. the guy who destroys his own books by just being himself. 🙂

  4. 100% right on the quality of Amigo books. My straitjacket set looks like poop right now.
Generation gone #1 is going for £5 in the uk atm but will definitely die down. I’m still picking up #2 as I really enjoyed #1
P.s thanks to all at comics heating up. This is my first ever post despite being a regular reader (bad form on my part) from the UK for a couple of years
Keep up the good work. I will continue to spread the word of comicsheatingup.net to all your cousins on this side of the pond!
