Comic Picks of the Week for Delivery 10/11/17

Each week hundreds of new comics hit the stands, each with potential. Some live up to the potential. We pick the ones we think have the best shot at heating up. Here are our picks of the week for delivery 10/11/17.
Returning Favorites
Back from NYCC and buying comics, just in time for Wednesday to… buy more comics. Granted, I did not keep many of the ones I bought at NYCC. Just a few souvenirs for myself.
Harrow County #26 – One of my favorite books on the market, horror or otherwise. Cullen Bunn does such a great job with unfolding the story.
Dark Nights Metal #3 – It is weird to have a DC book on here but this has been so good. Cannot wait to see what happens next.
Black Science #32 – Remender at his best, this book has taken more twists and turns than any other I can think of. Such a good read.
Royal City #6 – Nothing else like this book on the stands, I am grabbing the 1990’s Album homage if I can find it.
The Ones for the Cover
Action Comics #989 – Lenticular cover. Is Oz really Superman’s dad? We will find out.
Supergirl #14 Artgerm Variant – Artgerm was a Gem at NYCC, thanks to him for filming his part of the New Comic Spec Review video. This cover is just so nicely done, I wish it had come out before NYCC to get him to sign a couple of copies for me as well.
All New Wolverine #25 – Anniversary issue featuring a great cover with Daken and X-23 on the cover. Worth the pickup for Dodson art alone. I really think he is underrated and doesn’t get the attention he deserves.

The Halloween One
Hatchet #1 – Picking up where issue 0 left off. Great October book, just in time for halloween. A lot of horror books based on existing properties have real long term growth potential.
The Outside Chance
Gotham City Garage #1 – I know the Gotham City Sirens Movie was replaced by Harley and the Joker, but there oddball villainess-centric books seem to catch a fan base. Grab and Hold (cover A especially, Harley on a motorcycle). These series is based off a series of statues.
The Small Press Gems
Spongebob #73 – Eric Powell cover. Worth the pick up for Powell completists and fans of oddball comics.
Atomahawk #0 – This reprints the Heavy Metal Magazine stuff, but with the price point being high, retailers might not order heavy on it.
The Small Press Pick of the Week
Family Trade #1 – Justin Jordan (again, thanks for taking part in the new comic spec review) is just such an awesome writer. Look out for copies of the self published teaser, they are pricey but if this takes off….
The Pick of the Week
Despicable Deadpool #287 – (didn’t they do an issue 1000 a while ago…) Best lenticular cover coming out from Marvel. Overall, even with the gimmick, I think this cover has the best long term potential for growth this week.

In case you missed it, here is the New Comic Spec Review Video for 10/11/17 featuring Artgerm (he chipped in) and Justin Jordan (also chipped in).

  1. Spongebob #73 is already sold out on Midtown. I don’t recall the last time a Spongbob was sold out before release day on their site, if it has, it’s been quite a while.

  2. I pre-ordered SpongeBob when you gave us the heads-up a couple months ago. Glad to hear it’s selling out at the major online retailers. And I know most local comic shops don’t stock many copies of that series…
