Each week, hundreds of new comics hit the stands, each with potential. Some live up to that potential. We pick the ones we think have the best shot at heating up. Here are our picks of the week for delivery 10/25/17.
Some weeks are better than other for spec. This is one of the weeks that the spec picks are pretty light. Still many great books. Let’s jump into it.
Returning Favorites
Dark Ark #2 – Cullen Bunn’s new book. Cool story about another ark holding all the animals Noah skipped over.
Deadly Class #31 – Rick Remender’s awesome book about a school for assassins, laced in with some autobiographical info. Optioned a while back.
Descender #25 – One of my favorite books each month. Great sprawling story.
Glitterbomb Fame Game #2 – Glitterbomb is a great/strange horror book. Worth the pick up. Jim Sub is a great writer and a nice guy.
Rick And Morty #31 – Rick and Morty equal money. These have become pick up and holds for me.
Saga #48 – BKV epic book just keeps getting better and better.
The One With Factual Basis
X-Files JFK Disclosure #1 – I love historical fiction and alternate history stories. Mix it in with a well established show like the X-Files and you have something cool. The really cool part of all this is the series is being released at the same time thousands of documents on the Kennedy Assassination are being released. This happened before my time, but it is still pretty dang cool that the documents are being released. (I remember watching JFK and figuring out how old I would be when the documents were going to be released. That time has finally come.)
The Halloween One
Jughead The Hunger #1 – I was never a fan of Archie books. Ever. I do love these horror titles from Archie Comics though. Taking long standing characters and turning them into horror properties is pretty awesome. Hopefully they can keep a good release schedule for this one.
The Long Existing One to Watch
Spawn #279 – Spawn introduces a new hero to the Spawn Universe. Spawn fans are fanatics and a new first appearance in Spawn could be a good long-term hold. Several covers on this one, stick with the A cover and you should be fine.
The New Image #1
Hack Slash Resurrection #1 – Hack Slash has been a round for a while. I have really liked the previous series and am glad it is back. There has long been rumblings that this property could be turned into a TV Show or movie. Would be nice to see something come of it.
The Outside Chance
Army of Darkness #4 Pasquale Qualano Variant – People love cover homages. This swipe features Ash in the classic Todd McFarlane Amazing Spiderman #316 position. This one could have long-term wheels.
The Pick of the Week
Batman The Merciless #1 – You know a book is going to be good when it sells out before release and is already reprinted and the second print is available on the same day… This is one of those books. Batman/Wonder Woman mash-up.

Im going to pick up that X-Files book. Seems like a neat concept. The JFK assassination is absolutely fascinating to me, always has been (I think it was arranged by Bush Sr and the CIA). Isn’t it also the first conspiracy theory?
FWIW, John Alex McCone was the head of the CIA at the time of JFK’s assassination. Bush wasn’t director until the late 70’s.
Bush is on record as “not remembering” where he was at that point in time…..there are even photos of someone that bear a striking resemblance to him on file.
Regardless, I highly doubt anything of real value will be released to the public with regards to JFK. Just more ancillary shit for people to try and read into…..
I never said Bush was head of the CIA at the time.
Afterlife with Archie ruined me for anymore Archie horror stories.
For a second there I thought Army of Darkness was an homage to Amazing Adventures#12. I used that one for a variant to one of my own books, knowing it would be tough to spot. I try to choose lesser-known covers to commission, so it’s not an homage that is overdone… but still choose some of the overdone ones just because they’re such classic poses. I’ve wanted to do one for Avengers Annual#17’s cover, but we haven’t gotten there in the story yet to do that one, and I see Marvel used that cover as the basis for one of their lenticulars. I can’t see it on the cover with the foil merged mess, but I can see it in the solicitations, lol.
I’m hoping the new Hack/Slash is good. I got into that one early-on, when they released the “Comic Book Carnage” one-shot, and have been a fan ever since. I do admit that the ongoing series’ had some lulls, losing momentum compared to the minis & one-shots, so hopefully they can fix that problem with this one. Unless this turns out to be a mini-series… then I just hope the next mini-series isn’t too far away from this one…
