Poyo's Picks of the Week for Thursday November 22, 2017

It’s turkey week here in America. For all of you not aware of American holidays, this Thursday is the day all us Americans sit down to celebrate something that never actually happened. But we like to think we’re really nice people who get along with the people we stole land from.

Honestly, this week is about families coming together to be thankful for all the things in our lives and then most go off to cause stampedes at the local Walmart, pushing and shoving others so they can nab that item Walmart advertised at dirt cheap prices. It’s all about family right, not others when they’re trying to nab the big screen TV that you want as well.
So this week, spend time with your family and don’t go shopping, especially on Thursday evening. Everyone should have Thursday off, so stay home so all those that work in the retail business can enjoy some time off with their families as well. If you don’t like your family, sneak off and read comics if you have to. We all have that family member we wish was not part of the family. If you really got money burning a hole in your pocket, wait until Cyber Monday to buy crap you don’t need and have it delivered instead. There’s no reason to leave your house this week. Poyo says, bring the holiday “take the day off” back in holiday.
Now I’m just getting preachy so let’s get on with the picks for this week.
DC/Vertigo Pick
It’s a maxi series that will likely define some past, present and future events in the DC Universe. So we should all pay attention to this series as it prepares us for Watchmen. This weeks pick is Doomsday Clock #1. It’s not going to be a overnight spec hit or heat up, but could be a long term type of pickup.
They claim we are not ready for what they’ve prepared for us but I’m pretty sure we are, I hope. If not, I’m sure life will still go on though. Writer Geoff Johns teams up with Gary Frank on this series.
A honorable mention goes to the new Tim Seeley series Imaginary Fiends #1 horror book. Looks worthy enough to check out, especially if you love horror.
Marvel Pick
There’s not a whole lot going on in Marvel for me this week. Sure Silver Sable is back but my pick this week actually goes to Spider-Man Deadpool #24. I just love this cover and the series has been a great read as well. This is not a spec hit though, don’t expect it to ever go above cover price.
Another series we should all be paying attention to is Star Wars. Star Wars #39 hits stands this week and it focuses on the ashes of Jehda, which was destroyed by the Death Star in Rogue One. This could open up a bunch of new characters we end up seeing in the movie franchise. These types of books are always long term pickups though.
With Disney at the helms of LucasFilms and Star Wars, we could potentially see more of these spin-off one shot movies that got their ideas and characters from the comics.
Indie Pick
There’s several indie books hitting stands this week but my pick actually goes to a #3 book, which has been a terrific read so far. This weeks indie pick goes to Malefic #3.
Dan Schaffer has hit this out of the park for me. It’s got a great dialogue, it’s a great read and I love the black and white artwork, which appears soft with it’s gray toned shading.
Another book that I highly recommend and it’s hitting stands with it’s conclusion issue is Motor Girl #10. Terry Moore is pure genius. He seems to really make great stories that are thought out in advance. You can’t go wrong with a good Terry Moore book. It’s sad to see this one as such a limited series but some stories were not meant to run for too long, they can lose a bit if overtold.
Also another book I must mention is Infernoct #2 hits stands. I really enjoyed #1 and looking forward in seeing where this story takes us.
Small Publisher Pick
This weeks small publisher also has a Francavilla regular cover, so that’s a bonus. The pick goes to Doctor Radar #1 from Titan. I’m not picking this as a spec hit (as I don’t ever pick Titan books as spec hits, that’s just not their category) but it is a pick for reading.
From the description:

“Paris 1920. A gentleman detective plays a deadly game with a criminal mastermind, Doctor Radar, while investigating a series of horrific deaths! An atmospheric masterpiece perfect for fans of pulp noir and deadly criminal masterminds!”

Pulp noir mixed with some murder mystery is probably my next favorite type of story after Sci-fi. So this is a definite check it out book for me and you can’t go wrong with a Francavilla cover. I must also say that the Bezian cover B is quite nice as well. This might be the first time in a long time I pick up two Titan books that are the same book. I usually just pick these up as readers, picking my what I think is the best cover. Titan is known for numerous cover art for their debut issues.

Now on with the dreaded “avoid” pick, every writer and artist worst nightmare when it comes to selling their hard work.
This weeks avoid pick goes to Villain #1, from Red Giant Entertainment and with legendary artist Neal Adams writing. Sorry Neal, but this book just sounds awful. It’s nothing ground breaking and just reading the description bored me. So it’s the book to avoid and I think you’ll find it in the dollar bin one day, probably before the end run of Doomsday Clock.

That’s all I got this week. Love it, hate it, I don’t care cause I’ll be stuffed with turkey playing video games with the kiddos more than likely. Have a great Thanksgiving everyone!

  1. I thought I read somewhere that Spider-Man / Deadpool was ending, but that was months ago so I guess they changed their mind.

    1. Yeah, to my knowledge it was suppose to be a mini-series but was so popular they kept it going. #1 had what… a 5th or 6th printing.

    2. Yeah, it was originally supposed to be a mini-series with just the first storyline, but proved to be a huge success, and pretty much by #2 they’d already changed it to ongoing. But, there was also a point around #17-19 where there was a delay in releasing an issue and it was missing from the solicitations in Previews, and a bunch of websites started reporting that it was being cancelled… but that obviously wasn’t the case. People go nuts when a book turns up missing in Previews. I admit, I can panic when I see one of my faves disappear from the solicitations, but I don’t run out and start publishing news articles declaring a book is cancelled like some online sources do…

  2. Nice opening Poyo. Only 2 books for me tomorrow apocalyptic girl ( can never go wrong with a El Torres story) and Doomsday clock. I did managed to grab 2 copies of Teen Titans #12 over the weekend at cover price and of to the bay they go. Need X-mas $$. Hope you all have a great Thanksgiving.
I am thankful for this Awesome website that without it, my book collection wouldn’t be what it is today…

    1. Nice find on the teen titans. I picked up a copy on release day and I can’t even locate it in my long box collection. 🙁
      Happy Thanksgiving!
