Poyo's Picks for Dec 6th, 2017

Oh the weather outside is frightful,
But Poyo’s picks are so delightful,
Since you don’t need other sites,
Let us spec! Let us spec! Let us spec!

I should have been a song writer….   Seriously, I should have.  Too bad this weeks picks aren’t really that delightful. To be honest, there’s just not a whole lot going on this week for me. I might even skip going to the shop. All of this weeks books I already pre-ordered or have zero desire to go pick up myself.
DC/Vertigo Pick
There really isn’t a whole lot going on in the DC world this week. We got a new Batman and Superman. Batman #36 seems to be a two part series on some serious Bromance storyline between Batman and Superman. Midtown has listed some Micheal Turner variants for $16.99 (I’ll pass on those too).
So this weeks pick goes to White Knight #3 (as Anthony mentioned in his Spec video for this week). Great series and I love Sean Murphy artwork.
#1 has a 3rd print hitting stands while #2 has a 2nd print hitting stands.
Marvel Pick
This weeks pick goes to Amazing Spider-Man Venom Venom Inc. Alpha #1. Why not just call it Venom Inc.?
Anyways, this weeks pick is primarily for the Regular Cover done by Adi Granov , which honestly I think is better than the Dell’Otto cover that most shops will be selling at a premium.
The only turn off for this series for me is Dan Slott. I’m just not a fan. I’m so far behind Amazing Spider-Man readings probably since I’m sort of put off of his writing.
I would really enjoy it if Marvel would release Slott of his Amazing Spider-Man writing duties and let’s get a new fresh start with another writer. Maybe Slott could write Iceman or some other character no one really cares about.
Indie Pick
Since this week is so small, I got no other reason but to go with what Anthony picked in his spec video as well. Jet Jupiter #1 from Action Lab comes out this week and I really like the Cover C Jonboy Meyers variant. I might even be more interested in this series if the interior matched this cover. Sadly, that’s not the case though.
Action Lab always has super small print runs and most of the time always come banged up with spine issues (not sure about the rest of you but this is how it goes in my area at least). Finding one of these in minty fresh condition is almost as hard as finding one at all.
Regardless, this one might have potential. It has some familiar stories mixed together. Rocketeer and Robin Hood. It’s Robin Hood with a experimental jet pack.
Small Publisher Pick
Klaus And The Crisis in Xmasville #1 is my small publisher pick this week. Grant Morrison is back as I really enjoyed the first volume of Klaus.
The description tells it best:

Eisner Award-winning creator Grant Morrison (All-Star Superman) and Russ Manning Award winner Dan Mora (Saban’s Go Go Power Rangers) reunite for a brand-new Klaus Special! An evil Santa from an alternate dimension has founded an evil soda corporation that uses Christmas and Santa as a marketing tactic to build their fortunes. Only Klaus can defeat the Pola Cola Corp and the zombie-like Santas that are in the evil Santa’s thrall. ‘It’s the beautiful art and the unusual blend of grim medieval setting and whimsical fairy tale elements that truly distinguish this tale.’ – IGN

Another mention goes to Walking Dead #174. I must say, as a Walking Dead fan, this issue sounds boring. It’s like a filler issue cause Kirkman just didn’t know what to write.  The book is titled “A Solitary Life” and it’s description goes “The sad, sorry, solitary life of Negan. Face it, true believers, he deserves this.” I bet it’s this book is about as lively as Here’s Negan..  where we follow him around with hardly any dialogue and he kills a few zombies. This almost made it to my avoids picks. I think this might be the first issue where I only grab one copy, I see no reason to buy more than one.

Now on with the dreaded “avoid” pick, every writer and artist worst nightmare when it comes to selling their hard work.
This one was kind of easy this week. Usually I have a tough time deciding which book I might contribute in the artist and writer making less money.
But this week’s pick goes to Faith Winter Wonderland Special #1. I like the writer, trust me but this sounds boring. You’ll find this book in the dollar bin one day. I love Valiant but they really do need to make Faith less cheasy, it’s a put off and that’s one reason I have zero desire to read Faith.

That’s all folks..

  1. Poyo, now that you’ve added the “avoid” title or two each week (something I enjoy reading like many others), it might be time to create a snappy title for your blog; how about, Poyo’s Spec and Drek….???

  2. Awesome—love Powell and love that cover—I am in! What is the email to reach you at?
Thank you kindly by the way!!

    1. Yeah but it was still a let down for me… Maggie should have blown his face off. Kirkman has turned not only Rick into a wuss but now Began is a wuss.
