Wednesday Open Forum

Wednesday
Wednesday, the best day of the week, new comic book day. It is like your birthday in the middle of each week (well, one where you buy your own presents.)
We open things up to hear from you. A free for all.
The 163rd edition of the open forum!
As always we also want to hear about your weekly pickups.
So, What were your pick ups?
What had disappeared off the shelves?
What was sitting on the shelves?
What back issue deals did you grab?

    1. Anthony:
Nice pickup with that collection, especially considering how tough to find the later issues of Akira are! Issue #38 can go for $55-$80 in raw condition. Sounds like you did great for $20!

      1. I bought two collections that day for a total of 40 bucks. About 500 comics total. I can sell the bulk for $75 and still have all the gems I pulled out of it

    2. Hi Anthony! Have you looked in to the Akira 35th Anniversary Edition Box set released recently? It’s pretty sweet and these days Walmart and Amazon are in a price match battle so you can pick it up at a hefty discount!

    1. Oh man.. cheap deals = cheap thrills. I totally forgot I had these and dug them out of a box I was sorting and going through. So yeah, if you want a COA, just ask Anthony if they’re real, he’s the one who got them signed for me. ๐Ÿ™‚

        1. But I sold one graded copy and 2 x raw copies that covered the cost of all 10 I bought.. along with the graded one I kept for myself. ๐Ÿ™‚

  1. Iโ€™ve been reading Snyderโ€™s All Star Bats run, this week. Boy, it is really really hard to read something that Romita draws. Seriously, why is this guy so recognized in the industry? His stuff is instantly recognizable, and it looks like he is in early highschool art classes. Sooooooo bad. Rant over.

    1. Yeah, I’m not a fan of his art style either. I started reading All-Star Batman when it first came out and stopped after issue 3 or so…

      1. I gets better. Romita is gone after issue 5. Then Jock takes over for an issue. I knew Jock did issue 6 and I suffered through the first five issues knowing that it gets better. His (JRJr) art is so bad, it literally distracts me from the dialogue.

          1. I think there was supposed to be a bunch of artists on it. Including Paul pope. At least that is what they said when they introduced the series a long while back.

  2. It looks like DC has got rid of the rebirth trade dress on their covers. Thank god. And have a new corner box look featuring the DC logo, the hero in the booksโ€™ logo and the issue number. As well they have distinguished in the new cornerbox if the story is in the DC canon uni, or if itโ€™s an else worlds story. I likey the new look.

      1. It does look good. Really good. Stories that take place in the Main universe say โ€˜DC Universe in the cornerbox, while non canon Comics simply say โ€˜ DC Comicsโ€™. Informative, pleasant on the eye and classic styling. Love it.

  3. Hello again everyone.
Nothing really noteworthy to say this week. Other than a few black Friday sale dvd’s/blurays (Wonder woman combo pack, Rick and Morty season one and two and the Simpsons Xmas DVD #2), I haven’t added anything to my collections.
It’s full on Xmas time at my house. The wife keeps adding to the decorations! I did manage to squeeze some of my ornaments into the tree this year though!
Here’s some pics along with some from Halloween too!

Along with my stuff from last week that I didn’t bother to go pickup, this week I am grabbing:
    Venom Inc Alpha #1
    Batman #36
    Batman: White Knight #3
Iron Maiden: Legacy of the Beast #2
    Justice League #34
    Nightwing #34
    Darth Vader #9
    Superman #36
    Walking Dead #174
    Have fun everyone!

  4. Snagged Animosity #1-8 & Animosity Evolution #1-2 (all first prints, plus an extra 4th print of Animosity #1) for $15 shipped off of eBay. Rec’d in NM condition. There was a lot of chatter on here about so I decided to check it out. Other recent sales indicate I made out like a bandit.

  5. Batman White Knight is getting swamped on the secondary market now but that appears to not have caused Austin Books to apparently pull all of the Harley covers off their shelves. I didn’t ask but I can only assume if a shop as big as they are have 50+ of cover A and none of Cover B, they pulled them to possibly sell on the secondary market. At least Dragon’s Lair had their stack 50/50. Hopefully their box just got lost or something but I’m pretty sure these were sold as 50/50 when ordering as I doubt the comic shops sort these one after the other when stacking on the shelves. Shame on Austin Books if they did pull these. They’re pretty adamant about limiting hot books to customers at 1 per customer so if they did pull them.. well, that’s just kind of craptastic.
So if you’re in Austin and you want White Knight #3 Harley cover, don’t even bother with Austin Books, they had none available.

  6. Don’t forget to check out Syfy “Happy!”, series premiere is tonight. I was hesitant at first in how this would do on the screen but I finally got around to watching the trailer and it might be surprisingly good.

  7. I recently picked up one of my grails, Genus 2. It is considered the first appearance of Terry Moore’s Strangers in Paradise, September ’93.
There is a one page story of Francine and Katchoo in anthropomorphic form. On the previous page is a full page ad for SIP 1 with Francine, Katchoo, and David in human form, albeit wearing animal costumes. Francine in anthropomorphic form appeared earlier July ’93 in a pinup in Hit the Beach 1 (regular and gold foil variant). I’ve read that the characters also appeared earlier in a college newspaper, similar to Frank Cho’s Liberty Meadows.
Genus 2 had a low print run. Usually Antarctic Press had runs of about 3,000 for first issues. Second issue runs could drop by up to 25%. I’ve read that Genus 2 had a run of about 2,500. SIP 1 appeared November ’93 with a print run of 3,000.

      1. Genus 2 is pretty hard to find and Iโ€™ve been looking for a very long time. It is an adult โ€œfurryโ€ book. Most of my local comic stores no longer carry adult books. One that does has only a couple of short boxes in the basement that you have to ask to go look. I think most copies are already in personal collections due to the popularity of SIP.
Last year I found 4 copies of Hit the Beach 1, one of them the gold foil variant. I think that though the print run is similar, it is easier to find because it is not an adult book even though it is a โ€œfurryโ€ book. You are more likely to find it in back issue bins. I kept one of each and had them signed by Terry Moore. I gave him one copy as a way of saying thank you. I sold the 4th one.

  8. Small day for me……
    DC Holiday Special
The latest issue of Spawn, what was it 280
White Knight #3 2 H.Q. cover the store had a nice stack of both covers I just grabbed one copy.

  9. Had an excellent weekend and week of pickups: 3 mid grade copies of GS FF #4 for under $10 each, ASM 361 ($5), Silver Surfer 44 ($1), Gotham City Sirens #1 ($1), Whiz Comics 149 ($5),
And to top it off a very low grade Avengers #1 at a flea market for $100.
Came closer to finishing off my Happy CGC 9.8 collection when issue #2 came in the mail, the only one I don’t have slabbed in 9.8 is the Morrisoncon variant, have it raw and will get around to sending it off soon.
Just read the new issue of WD. So many “f**k yes” moments, but was disappointed with the ending

  10. Batman: White Knight #3 Harley Quinn cover.None 1st and second store i hit when they opened only cover A.Called 3rd store to put one in my reserve bag went at dinner time sold out.

  11. Pick ups from today:
    Darth Vader #9
    Walking Dead
    Batman 36
    DC Christmas Special
Batman White Knights #3 X 2 Harley Quinn cover. Went to three shops and was able to snag 2 copies, Posted on Ebay and both are sold already at $11.99 each.
    Spec books of the week:
The rest of the Gotham Resistance books are really starting to take off. In my travels today, I was able to snag the following all at cover price:
Green Arrow 32 Sejic cover X3
    Green Arrow 32 Grell cover
Nightwing 29 Casey Jones cover X2
All of these books have Batman Who Laughs in them. I posted them between $9.99-$12.99 each and only have the Grell Green Arrow and one Nightwing left (all sold within 3 hours). Be on the lookout for these. Especially the Sejic Nightwing and Suicide Squad #26. The ones that I found today were not in the greatest shape and had to pass on them. All are moving at higher and higher prices.
    Good hunting!

  14. Picked up most of what I wanted except for Extremity #9 and the Granov cover for Venom Inc. #1. It was mentioned above that the Gotham Resistance Metal Tie-In books are creeping upward in value, but another book that is doing this is the Doomsday Clock #1 11:57 variant (black and white cover). I picked up a copy today since my LCS finally received their shipment of this variant, but didn’t know at the time that the book was selling above cover price. May have to go back to grab a couple more to see if a flip is possible.

  15. I grabbed a White Knight #3B x3, Iron Maiden #2 x2 of each cover, Batman, Dr. Strange and I continue to grab Metal as I find them. This week was a couple of Nightwing 29A, Suicide Squad #26A, Murder Machine, Drowned, my order of Metal #3 Mattinas from 7Ate9 arrived and orders placed for Metal #4 (Mattina) and #5 (Dell ‘Otto). Have a Very Metal Xmas.

  16. Picked up the following from my LCS yesterday.
    Extremity #9
    Paradiso #1
    Rock Candy Mountain #6
    The Walking Dead #174
    Witchblade #1
    Batman #36
    Batman: White Knight #3
    Doctor Strange #382
    Generation Gone #5
Has anyone read Generation Gone? It was kind of slow issues 1-3, but issues 4 & 5 were incredible and extremely violent. #5 was the end of the 1st arc. I’m looking for to reading this again 2018. Also if you haven’t read Rock Candy Mountain to need to run out and buy it now. It was even educational.
