Comic Picks of the Week for Delivery 12/13/17

Each week hundreds of new comics hit the shelves, each with potential. Some live up to that potential. We pick the ones we think have the best shot at heating up. Here are our picks of the week for delivery 12/13/17:
Pretty strong week for releases, but since it is the end of the year, kind of weak on spec. But never fear, there are still a few that stand out in front of the pack. Let’s jump into it.
Returning Favorites
Aliens Dead Orbit #4 – I have always been a fan of the movies, but as of late, I have been picking up the comics. This series is the reason why. Crazy good book written and drawn by James Stokoe. Giving an indy horror feel to a licensed book.
Harrow County #28 – Crazy good southern fried horror by Cullen Bunny. One of my favorite books out.
Animosity #11 – Still love the main series. The spinoffs are so/so, but this is still a great book.
Jughead The Hunger #2 – Still love me some Archie horror. Thankfully there have not been big gaps in the release of this book.
Die Kitty Die Christmas Special One Shot – This is a guilty pleasure. A spoof of the Harvey characters many of us 80’s kids remember.
New #1’s
Monstro Mechanica #1 – a new series starring Leonardo da Vinci, his female apprentice and their wooden robot! I love speculative and alternative history books so I will be grabbing one.
Giants #1 – New Dark Horse Series by the Valderrama Brothers, this is their first American Work. Giant monsters for the win. I love kanji books and there hasn’t been anything in that genre for a while. Will be grabbing one.
Rumble Vol. 2 #1 – Great series so far. Not going to be a big spec book, but an awesome book. Pick it up for a reader, but you may have to read the first volume to see what is going on.
Book To Watch
Amazing Spiderman #792 – New character, tie in to the Venom Inc story line. Agent Anti-Venom appeared in Venom Inc Alpha, one page but does say he is Anti-Venom. Agent Venom did well, and I am willing to take the gamble on Agent Anti-Venom.
For The Cover
Supergirl #16 Artgerm Variant – as long as he keeps producing these cover price variants I will but them. These will not sneak up on any retailer, but they will go nice in a collection or sell as a set.
All New Wolverine #28 – Great Elizabeth Torque cover featuring X-23 getting her claws chopped off. Not sure this is anything more than cover dressing, but if someone (Taken) cuts off her claws, this could make for an interesting story.
The Cheap Ones
True Believers Phoenix Bizarre Adventures – Reprints the Marvel magazine, black and white appearance from Bizarre Adventures #27. I love cheap classic comics, also out this week is True Believers Phoenix Classic and True Believers Phoenix Returns
Small Press Pick of the Week
Under: Scourge of the Sewers #1 – Hefty $5.99 price tag. Wont be heavily ordered. But it has a great story featuring giant spiders, huge alligators, and military action under the city. I read this early and it is worth getting. Titan first issues tend to sell out and we have seen price spikes in the past.
 Pick of the Week
Judas #1 – Boom Studios- Emmy and Writers Guild of America Award-nominated writer Jeff Loveness (Marvel’s Nova) presents an exploration of the classical biblical character, perfect for fans of Preacher and The Goddamned. Screenwriter + Comic + Boom having a first look deal in place = potential for small press screen adaptation.

That is it for us this week. Let us know what you are spec-ing on. And in case you missed it, here is this week’s New Comic Spec Review video for 12/13/17

  1. I have really enjoyed Animosity. I wish they would focus on the main book and get it out regularly instead of all these spin offs. Only 10 issues of the main series and 3 spin offs already. That ratio does not make sense to me.

    1. Yeah, I stopped reading it myself. I enjoyed it until I stopped, figured I’d pick it up in trade later one as it was cut due to just general cutbacks but I agree, the spinoffs are ridiculous. Focus on main story, do spinoffs later. Just seems like cash grabs with the spinoffs..

  2. I also enjoy the Aliens comics but I like to wait for the trades with those books. I’ve heard good things about Stokoes style lending it’s style to the Aliens universe.

  3. It is only the 2nd issue of Jughead give them time. Archie and Sabrina started out smooth and then look what happened……..nothing. I’m not even looking in their direction anymore.

    1. I feel the same. I didn’t even bother with Jughead. I’m done. Maybe one day if they ever finish, then I’ll opt to buy the big hardcover if there is one to read.
