Wednesday Open Forum

Wednesday
Wednesday, the best day of the week, new comic book day. It is like your birthday in the middle of each week (well, one where you buy your own presents.)
We open things up to hear from you. A free for all.
The 167th edition of the open forum!
Happy New Year everybody. Hope you had a good one. Did you see Star Wars Last Jedi yet?
As always we also want to hear about your weekly pickups.
So, What were your pick ups?
What had disappeared off the shelves?
What was sitting on the shelves?
What back issue deals did you grab?

  1. Bought a book this week Adam Legend of the Blue Marvel #1 1st antiman and 1st Blue Marvel hitting the LCS tomorrow for the first time in months. Slowly coming out of hibernation early.

  2. What’s up guys? A couple of months ago I took a month off from ordering comics online……..except for my pre-orders. So this month I’m going to take it a step further, no online orders (except for my pre-orders ) and no new in store pickups. I’m just going to hope I did not miss anything in my pre-orders. If I go to my main shop I’ll clean out my pullbox of course, which is 99% PC anyways. I’m just too behind on my reading and organizing, so hopefully this helps me catch up.

    1. Good luck A. King. It took me 3 months to finally organize my books. And I am way behind on my reading as well.

      1. Yeah I’m down sizing my collection as well. I’m only keeping the series that I enjoyed reading and sell the rest. Reason why I spent the time organizing so that it can be easier to find the books and sell.

      2. Same here so far I’ve got one long box re-bagged and boarded in Mylar that is PC, about 7 short boxes that are not PC, and that’s less than a third of my collection.

  3. I’m picking up Batman 38 both A & B, Spawn 281, and green lantern 38.
On a side note, my wife and I have been watching Game of Thrones. We got first 4 seasons on black Friday and stated to watch them. I love the mid evil era. I think so far this show takes top notch on how it was like back in the day. I’m on season 5 now and it’s good. No spoilers for those who haven’t watched it lol. I would love to get a peace done by Ignacio Calero on Game of Thrones theme. Check out his art work in Belladona.

  4. For all those who rather purchase online, as of writing this Mycomicshop still has Batman #38 A&B for sale at $3.00 each. Midtown, as was stated before is sold out of cover A but still has cover B for sale at $2.54 each. I’m sure the print run is large but seems to be moving fast.

    1. Nice picks. Need to find me some $10 books. Can never go wrong with $10 books. What ever happened to Henchgirl?

  5. Happy New year CHUers! Hope everyone is starting off their year well! I’m still off for a few more days so I’m just about to head out to my LCS.
    I am getting:
    Baby teeth #7
    Batman #38
    Batman and the signal #1
    Batman White Knight #4
    Birthright #29
    Justice league #36
    Nightwing #36
    Star wars #41
    Superman #38
    Walking dead #175
    Drive safe everyone!

      1. First day back sucks but you know what I I’m find worse?? The second day back!
First day I’m tired and not feeling it, but day 2 I’m even more tired nlbecause of day one and I’m still not feeling it.
Lucky for me, in my line of work I can plan a few days that don’t really involve me too much but are still very beneficial and productive.

      2. I did too.. I spent all day on the couch (except after I dropped kids off at school, went to comic shop and then came home to the couch before picking kids up from school, only to have a meeting from my couch after I got back home). 🙂

    1. My shop had them. Had about a stack of 10 or so. Most of them had nasty spine dings, I picked two of the best I think..

    2. One shop in my area had a few and another had a stack of them. I passed. There’s another shop that I know that kinda caters to kids and I’ll bet they have a bunch. I don’t see any heat on this book…yet.

  6. My LCS was hit by a Batman #38 shelf clearer right at open today. Other than him, the only other copies went to pull lists. I got a cover B. No policy about shelf clearing at my LCS, which is totally fine with me. No need to fear shelf clearers when you pre order your books 🙂

      1. I never do that on release day, maybe I’ll get 2 copies but I never clear the shelf. I used clear it for the newsstands though.

  7. First trip to the LCS in the New Year, and I walk out a felon. I get an extra 5% off as a valued customer (or whatever term they use), so after the associate finished tallying up my books, I mentioned that I am supposed to get that discount. He apparently went back in and re-entered my purchase to add the discount but appears to have left out a handful of books that I grabbed that weren’t on my original pull. I didn’t realize it at the time that I paid (nor did he), but as I was driving home I started thinking that the amount I paid seemed a little low. And, after looking at the receipt, my hunch was correct. So, I’ll have to go back and settle up – don’t want anyone to get in trouble, including myself.
Anyway, no Cosmo, no Popeye zombie variant, and no Spawn, so I missed out on those. I did get the Batman A & B, the Green Lantern A (& B, but that one doesn’t show the new baddie), and a couple others mentioned in the CHU videos.
    My purchases:

    1. Lol once we got to chatting as I was being rung up. Well we got side tracked and I left without actually paying. I realized after I got home so I called and we laughed and I just paid the following Wednesday.

      1. Yeah, I went back tonight and squared things away, so no biggie in the end. Also picked up the last Green Lanterns #38 A cover since it appears to be heating up a bit.

      2. Long ago when I worked at Lowes during my college days, I worked the cashier in the Lawn and Garden section and so many times I’d forget to scan the crap on the bottom of the cart. I’d just let them continue on their way when I realized I didn’t ring up the stuff on the bottom.. I hated that job anyways.

  8. I guess I’m just going to have to list what’s in my pullbox at my main shop for awhile…….
    Extremity #10
    Paper Girls #19
    Animosity Evolution #3
    Solar Flare season 2 #3
    White Knight #4
I was going to call them to put me a copy of Batman in my pullbox, but when I realized I already pre-ordered a couple I changed my mind.
One of my titles ended recently The Woods. I was reading that from the beginning, and I just found out another is ending soon East of West, that might be one of my favorite comics I’m reading now.

  9. Well someone went a bit crazy at my LCS on batman 38. So my LCS is a bigger store. They order easily 100+ batman rebirth titles monthly on top of whatever they have for pulls. Someone bought up all of them. Both covers.

    1. The owner/manager allowed one person to buy up all store stock on a hot book from a popular title? I can see if they allow multiples when large quantities are ordered but every single copy? That’s messed up. Shows they have little regard for all their regulars.

      1. They fulfilled all their pulls before letting the guy pick up all the copies. They’re a bigger shop so yeah they have a lot of “extras” on the shelf. The guy called in and asked to have the rest of them.

      2. No to long ago, I was looking at this one guy’s collection. I am not kidding you. He had at least 15+ copies of a certain titles. His main collection was from the 90’s, but man some people do go crazy.

    2. Shame on the store and the person who cleared all the copies. There’s a special place in hell for those types of people. If you’re going to do that, these are the types that should get their own diamond account and start their own comic book shop…

      1. I get that sentiment as I’ve missed out on stuff that wasn’t on my pull list. But the store fulfilled their pull list first. Guess it’s a risk you take if you don’t have a pull file with them/any shop on a hot issue?
They also have multiple stores within the city, so they’ll probably be able to move some over by tomorrow to get them into the hands of walk ins too. I went to their smallest shop they have afterwards (around 6pm pst) and they had 10 copies left. 4 Cover a and 6 Cover B

      2. @Brennan. Ive looked into opening a Diamond Acct. It requires, if i remember correctly, about $400 US monthly order. Not sure what discount you get ordering direct in small quantities. You then have to pay shipping each week for your books. You also need a credit card acct which accepts credit payments. I believe there may be one more hoop to jump through. Between my weekly reads and specs, I come close to spending retail $100 weekly, which puts me close to the Diamond monthly minimum. But I would have to order more because of the wholesale price. You would also get all the 1 per stores for free and those ash cans. Perhaps one day I will open an account, but probably not.

      3. I know. I stated that in my comment, ‘I come close to spending retail $100 weekly, which puts me close to the Diamond monthly minimum. But I would have to order more because of the wholesale price.’

    3. Lol Jesus that is something else. If i could afford it. I’d probably go nuts as well. Maybe not 15 each of each issue but crazy nonetheless

          1. I dont flipnl as much as you Tony but most of my online orders are all paid for by money from flipping and seing other stuff.
But I can say going to NYCC and selling crap we pick up while still on the con floor is fun. Those trips end up paying for themselves or even make profit from them.
Buy item for $20… Snap pic, list, sell it… Go buy more…. Repeat. Then keep the few things you want to keep and you basically got your swag for free.

            1. Man. This year was epic. There was so much easy flipping. $20 items we got for free $185 for items we paid $40 for. People emailing us because we were matching the current recorded sales and telling us we were going to low, meanwhile they are still trying to sell the same items months later.

      1. I did the same thing at NYCC and also received emails that I was selling things for too cheap. Wonder if it was the same eBay user? Repeated emails from the same user. I made a nice profit flipping NYCC items in real time. Great fun!

      2. I had a guy emailing a few months ago about a hot book I was apparently selling for too low. I laughed and exchanged a few emails with him. What a goof. I wish I set the market rates for hot books, lol.

      3. Lol. I had a person call me out cuz I listed a book to high. I listed it at where the market was. I just told him if he didn’t like my price to buy from someone else who had it cheaper.

  12. Fairly light week for me. Picked a few back issues that I had missed while I was out, along with a few filler ASM back issues for my PC. Here are my pick ups:

    Star Wars #41
    TWD #175
    White Knight #4 A&B

Astonishing XMen #7 Checchetto Avengers Variant, got this by mistake, I got it for cover and thought it was a ratio.
Harley Quinn Futures End #1 Lenticular cover w/Joker x3 $1 each.

      1. I’m behind on it myself but have not been picking up new issues…. Why’d you drop it? For me it did seem to be getting kind of redundant…. Dragged out longer than it should be.

      2. I was thinking about dropping Manifest Destiny for the same reasons. I’ll probably give it another arc or two.

  13. Not a lot in my box today.
    Crosswind #6
    Batman #38 X 2
    Batman: White Knight #4

    Rock Candy Mountain #7
Slow week, but that is normal after Xmas. I usually have less money in my pocket right after the holiday’s. LCS was sold out on Green Lanterns #38, Spawn, and no Cosmos #1 even ordered.

    1. Now I know why my LCS couldn’t find Cosmos #1. It’s Cosmo not Cosmos. I confused him. He found one for me. Now lets hope it does something.

      1. Rat Queens was awesome up until Roc stopped drawing it. Then Wiebe went and Wiebed himself and ruined this series like he did with Peter Panzerfaust. I will never read another Wiebe book ever again… He literally is his own worst enemy when it comes to messing up his own stories and books.

      2. I agree with Poyo for the most part except I am keeping hope that Rat Queens finds its footing again. The best Rat Queens was with Roc. I was able to pick up some Roc original art for super cheap after the s*** hit the fan.
Rat Queens has been struggling ever since, but there have been flashes of past glory so it is one of the few series I am still giving a chance. It has a solid foundation and a steady fan base. It is selling merch through Patrick Rothfuss’ Tinker’s Pack and Pat wrote a backup story. I still see geek celebs wearing Rat Queens shirts and see Rat Queens cosplay.
I’ve dropped a lot of books lately, but my permanent pull list includes Rat Queens, Rick & Morty, Invader Zim, and anything Neil Gaiman, Brandon Graham, James Stokoe, and Sam Kieth.
