Could Cosmic Ghost Rider Appeared Before Thanos #13?

Thanos #13 has been doing well on the secondary market. Written by Donny Cates, the issue introduces the first appearance of the Cosmic Ghost Rider. The Cosmic Ghost Rider works for Thanos, is a tad insane, and rides on a mash-up rocket motor cycle. The character is part of the reason that fans are drawn to the series. But what if this is not the characters first appearance?

Thanos #13 (non-lenticular covers) are selling for $13 – $16 on eBay. It features a future version of Ghost Rider who works for Thanos. This is very similar to a future version of Ghost Rider that was featured in Guardians of The Galaxy #13 from 1991. This was a part of a 2 part story that continued in Guardians of The Galaxy #14.

Thanks to Jeremy A for sending this over.

  1. This has been brought up before in other places and I’ll defer to what Cate says, that Thanos 13 is his first app.
If anything this is much like the whole TAH22 thing with New Exiles and Battleworld or whatever it’s called debate.

    1. I don’t know….. both are from the future and both are Ghost Rider. I guess one could say maybe one in from a more distant future, but that would only be adding more speculation.

    2. I see it different. I don’t see it as a debate of which is the true first appearance, if Cate says its Thanos 13, I agree, but just like Battle World, it is a cool addition people should look at. I do not own any Guardians 13, am not selling any, so I have no “dog in the fight.” I thought it was a cool addition that if people are digging the future cosmic Ghost Rider, well, here is another one.

      1. I always go by what the writers and artists claim as well but the secondary market and grading companies don’t always side. Example is with Winter Soldier first appearance. Brubaker claims its in issue 1 for Volume 5 but everyone goes for issue 6 as the real first appearance. Another instance is when Kirkman and Adlard verified that Alpha’s first appearance is issue 132 but it seems half the majority claim its issue 138.

      2. The other one that’s interesting Poyo with the whole writer vs everyone else is Batman Who Laughs. Snyder says it’s Metal 2, but DC solicits on the 2nd print says TT12, as does the market.

  2. People will not take kindly to upsetting the investment that they’ve already made with Thanos 13. So, there will be resistance. Folks who have invested will find reasons it is not.
Ghost Rider riding the cosmos with the Guardians of Galaxy? – hmm…. looks Cosmic Ghost Rider-ish to me.

    1. Well said man! I too am sold on Guardians 13 being the first Cosmic Ghost Rider. Feelings shouldn’t dictate the facts.

      1. People seem to take things either too personal or serious. Its human nature. Honestly none of this matters in life. If anyone gets upset over a first appearance debate… They got some other issues they should sort out I say.

  3. A copy of Guardians of the Galaxy 13 is Cheap for the direct edition. Finding a newsstand copy will be a bit pricy and harder to find. I don’t see any newsstand on eBay.

  4. It would appear the cosmic ghost rider is a different”rider”, than the future ghost rider. There sure are a lot of ghost riders riding around.

    1. We haven’t had a female Ghost Rider or a color change yet (or amalgam). I have 1st dibs on the Wolver-Rider. More to come, surely, from the House of Ideas

        1. I demand we need a GhostGwenriderWolverpool…. It just knocks all the potentials out in one character. 😉

  5. Cool cover…..not static and posed like alot of the comics these days. I remember the 90s had covers that I loved for the art like Bisley and Adams but today there are a tons of cover artists showcasing amazing talents squeezing another 3.99 out of everyone’s debit/credit card for our collections. DC’s B covers strike a good balance at offering choice and showcasing talent. Marvel is just blatant cash grab which turns me off but I’m guilty of feeding into it tightening my belt every month clamoring for a 1:25 Or 50 in a title that I enjoy or character that I’ve collected forever. Anyway I have no idea where I’m going with this…..long live comics! I’m in it for the long haul.

    1. Yeah man, quite often I buy books just because I dig the cover, regardless of the spec potential. That’s what interested most of us in comics in the first place, I would imagine –the cool covers.

      1. I have a specific section on my PC, labeled ‘Favouritr Covers’. Most of the books in that section are there simply because I like them. Not because of its value.

    1. I just went on eBay to pick up my GOTG 13 and 14. The 13’s in VFNM or better are going fast. Not a lot of them available that’s reasonably priced at the moment.

    1. Alana. I’m curious as to why you’re all over Gwenom as the ‘next big thing’, but so quick to dump on Cosmic Ghost Rider? It’s literally the exact same thing, as far as speculators go. Very curious to hear your answer to that.

  6. The old space ghost rider looks so serious. The new cosmic looks comedic. Cool book to read. Not likey the same.
