Poyo's Spec and Drek for January 10th, 2018

It’s the second Wendnesday of the new year and I must say, it’s looking great so far. Last week we saw Batman 38 fly off the shelves at the shops and the new Archie book Cosmo was reported to be non-existent at some shops, what do we have in store for this week?

There’s a few books already selling out online. Now this doesn’t mean you won’t find them at your local shop but it does indicate what’s got potential and definitely what’s already selling.
DC/Vertigo Pick
The DC pick this week is a no brainer. Already mentioned in Tony’s spec video and it’s one of those Killer B covers.
Flash #38 Francesco Mattina Cover B makes the cut this week.
Already sold out at most online retailers and some retailers only order cover B’s if pre-ordered by customers, this might be harder to find than one anticipates.
So grab it if you see it and grab extra copies if you can. I don’t think this book will be a huge flip but as demand goes up and supplies run dry, it could be an easy $10-$20 flip down the beaten comic book path.
Marvel Pick
This weeks pick for Marvel goes out to Old Man Hawkeye #1. Which has a really decent looking Steve McNiven cover as well. Grab it if you can find it cheap. But don’t pay a huge premium for this cover, you’ll likely find it for cheaper than most comic shops on the secondary market.
It’s being written by Ethan Sacks (upcoming star writer according to Marvel, even though I can’t find anything more than his work at NY Daily News) and drawn by Marco Checchetto (who I think is overlooked at times, great artist).
Taking place 5 years before the original Old Man Logan story arc, this story draws me in with the Mad Max dystopian future like story. It’s definitely a check out type of book and we’ll see if this new Ethan Sacks is a potential “rising star” in the Marvel Universe.
Indie Pick
This pick has been building for quite some time. A few giveaways, a few other CHU articles on secret variants and likely more future giveaways.
My indie pick this week goes out to Stabbity Bunny #1 from Scout Comics. You might even have seen the author make a brief cameo appearance in Anthony’s Weekly Spec video.
This book is getting great reviews. The self published books are selling really well on the secondary market and now pre-orders for the secret variant is selling well above cover as well.
So don’t miss out on this one. Even if you have zero desire to read this, if you find a copy at your local shop, pick one up. Could be short term flip or long term, it has all the potential in the world I think.
Another shout out goes to Gao #1. Already selling out online. It’s definitely a book to watch.
Small Publisher Pick
I’ve been eyeing this book for a while now, seeing it in Previews a while back.
My small publisher pick goes to Atlas & Axis #1.

When roaming warriors Atlas and Axis return home to find that their village has been destroyed by Viking raiders, they set off on a perilous journey across land and sea to save their friends!

This book looks great. The artwork looks great as well. I don’t know about the rest of you all but I’ve been digging some of Titan’s new stuff they’re putting out, with the more indie feel to them. Beautiful Death was a great series, looks like this one will pick up the void since that one has ended (or will be ending soon). Under Scourge of the Sewer was another great book recently put out by Titan Press.

Now on with the dreaded “avoid” pick, every writer and artist worst nightmare when it comes to selling their hard work.
This weeks avoid goes to yet another book that’s on that thin border of it could be a great flip or it could be a big flop.
I think it’s all about timing and it’s a big what if, but the avoid pick goes to Gao #1 from Antarctic Press. I’ve never had much luck with Antarctic Books so I’m keeping my skeptic hat on for this one. So don’t pay over cover price for this one and don’t spend too much time looking for it if your local shop didn’t get any.
Sure I did a shout out to it earlier for the Indie picks but it’s just one of those books that could be that really quick flip or it’s that type of book you find yourself sitting on months from now, debating if you should dump it off into the Half Price books pile to get your few pennies for it.
Good luck, that’s all I got this week.

  1. I’m not a Hawkeye fan by any stretch of the imagination (who is, really?), but I loved The OML story. I’m looking forward to going back to this timeline too, Poyo, and I hope it delivers.

    1. I like Matt Fractions run on Hawkeye…. Then it just started getting a little redundant… And they seemed to drag on with Kate as Hawkeye so I lost interest myself. I’m hoping this new book is good… I’ll likely know after #1 if I’m in for the long haul or not.

    1. I know right.. it was one of those books where I’m like.. this could be great or it could be not so great..

  2. A shout out for Gao 1 but then a non-shoutout for Gao 1?!! That was funny –
What’s the ratio on the Stabbity Bunny secret variant? Does anybody know-

  3. Hawkeye is the Marvel equivalent of DC’s Cyborg..the character they really believe should be a star player in all media. They cannot accept that some heroes are second stringers and are at their best as team players or occasional guest stars.

    1. That’s why I thought Fractions take on him was great. This future old Hawkeye could be a great story though. As long as they make him human…. Like, make mistakes… Get hurt…. Act like a non hero… Could be great.
