One Year Later: Spec Review for 1/11/17

What up CHU!?! Shawn B., the One Year Later Investigator, back with another One Year Later round up, where we take a look at some of the comics that Anthony, Mel and Poyo specced on one year ago. Their specs turn out to be quick flips, slow burns, straight up misses, straight up winners and on and on. Sometimes they spec with their hearts out of their passion for comics, sometimes they spec based on data, and sometimes they spec based off the word on the street. Either way, all their specs appeal to a few or many collectors whether it is due to them having similar taste in writing or art, or just an opportunity for a collector to flip a book and make money to “support their habit”. So, this is our weekly chance to look back at how some of our buys from a year ago are doing today.Winners

Red Sonja #1 Variant J. Scott Campbell Cover – Anthony Pick
Original Value: $4 Current Value: $8
Sold out at retailers. Still a ton of sales activity on this one. But hey it’s JSC no big shocker here.

God Country #1 – Anthony & Poyo Pick
Original Value: $4 Current Value: $22
No shocker here! This one has averaged as high as $35 going back to March. And all the variants are doing well also including the 2nd printing.

Spider-Man #12 Isanove Variant – Mel Pick
Original Value: $20 Current Value: $24
Unlike a lot of variants this one is still hanging on to it’s value.
Misses

Doctor Crowe #1 – Anthony Pick
Original Value: $4 Current Value: $4 Still available at Midtown.
Recent sales on the bay have been for well below cover plus shipping. There may have been quick flip potential on this one because it did sell out, because early sets of both covers sold as high as $15, but the sales are over 90 days so I don’t have the data to back it up.

Captain America Steve Rogers #9 Kirby 100th Anniversary Variant – Poyo Pick
Original Value: $10 Current Value: $5
Maybe more for the PC since it’s Kirby.

Knight Guardians Of Relativity #1 – Poyo Pick
Original Value: $4 Current Value: $4 Still available at online retailers.
I know this one heated up just a little bit for a small amount of time but I am unsure of the value at that time.

Daredevil #15 Bermejo Variant – Mel Pick
Original Value: $20 Current Value: $15
I grabbed this one. Still a really cool cover.
Unspecced Winners

SStar Wars Poe Dameron #10 40th Anniversary Variant – Original Value: $20 Current Value: $33

  1. God Country was a good read and a great flip last year. Can’t tell you how many #2 1st prints I sold as well as #1’s.
Poe Dameron #10 was a great find. Can still find these every once in awhile for $5-$10 and flip them online.

      1. HA! Me too! I think I am going to just hang onto them now for a little bit—this story was incredible and it makes me wonder if some sort of media deal is right around the corner.

      2. I already capitalized on mine. I still have a few in the PC but if they started selling at the right price, I’d let them go without hesitation.

    1. That super-crappy Marvel paper can just be brutal on some books. Over time, I would think that issue would be reflected in market prices—I suppose we’ll see.

      1. Yeah I really wish they would do something about that. Every time I take a book of the shelf and bring it to the counter I can feel the grade being diminished.

      2. Marvel prints thousands and thousands over most publishers. I can tell you its to keep costs down on their books and thinner paper means stacks of books are lighter and take up less space in a shipping box.
Also, Marvel doesn’t print books to capitalize on the secondary market or what we perceive as a collectible item, so they will never care if the book is a minty 10. The moment a publisher starts spending money on the extra care to keep books all mint, either they lose money or our costs start going up. I dont know about you but if comics start becoming $6 or up for normal regular editions is the day I stop buying them.

        1. Same here. $5 regular books is my limit. That is pushing it. The less books cost the more I buy. That is why I support Alterna’s newsprint books as readers. I buy damn near their entire line.

          1. Long ago when I collected baseball/basketball cards, I quick quickly out when they went from 50 cent 10-15 cards per pack down to the $3-$5 and you got 5 cards per pack in the early to mid 90s, everything was about the chase inserts. I lost interest real fast.
The same will be with comics but it also seems like it’s already transitioning that way. I started out on this site as a reader first, collector second.. then started flipping books (thanks Anthony) to buy more books.
Now I’m starting to possibly focus on buying only books to sell, stop collecting books as much and the ones I want to read I wait for the trade to come out. There are some beautiful covers now but I’m already really tired of the 3 pack sets, where you paying crazy premium prices just to have the dressing removed from the cover, etc.

      3. I was the same way Poyo. Collector first, then reader, then flipper. But now, I’m just buying to flip and complete my ASM collection. Doing one from #252-375. I’m a 1/3 way there.

  2. I did well on the God Country books. I have 6 copies of #1 2nd print and a full sent of 1-6 both A&B for #1. Waiting to see what happens to this series before I decide to sell them.
