Wednesday Open Forum

Wednesday
Wednesday, the best day of the week, new comic book day. It is like your birthday in the middle of each week (well, one where you buy your own presents.)
We open things up to hear from you. A free for all.
The 169th edition of the open forum!
As always we also want to hear about your weekly pickups.
So, What were your pick ups?
What had disappeared off the shelves?
What was sitting on the shelves?
What back issue deals did you grab?

Here are my pickups this week so far:

    1. Thats not even all of them. I moved things around in my comic room and placed about 75 on top of the short boxes. I have stopped buying new ones though.

      1. I’m sitting on approx. 75-100 pops myself and growing. They’re something I have a hard time saying no to due to the low price of them. I’m glad you’ve stopped, so I can catch up and pass you! Hehehe pickle Rick’s coming out soon! Feb 13th I think.

  1. I haven’t seen any mention of Kirkman’s Oblivion Song – nor any on the bay – but retailers got one copy of the first four issues in one convenient trade size collection. Much bigger than an ashcan and in color. First issue is still two months away.

  2. Small week, but looking forward to picking up the following:
Doctor Strange (variant and regular cover)
    Star Wars action figure variant
    Jimmy’s Bastards
    Kill or Be Killed
Spec pick ups for the week:
Stopped by a store that I sometimes frequent and was killing time before a meeting. Was looking through a box of kid’s comics and lo and behold, Rick and Morty #1 first printing for $5 in VF+ shape. Needless to say, I grabbed it up as well as a JSA Classified #2 2nd print (Powergirl Adam Hughes black and white) for $3, and 2 Totally Awesome Hulk #22 for $40 each in beautiful mint shape. Online sales of the TAH #22 is starting to spike upwards again between $45-$50 as it gets closer to the new ongoing series. Best of all, as I’m checking out I get 10% off the purchase due to a sale they had going on. That has got to be one of the best finds I’ve had in quite awhile!
    Good hunting everyone!

  3. I got a question and I know someone on here can help. I was just organizing a short box and I found a copy of Avatar Illustrated 1998, and I noticed it had a picture of The Goon on it. So I did some research and some places say it’s the 1st appearance and some say it’s not. So do you guys have any info on this?

    1. In reference to Promethea, this is from comicbookscalping.com: “One thing to note is that Promethea’s first appears on the cover of America’s Best Comics #1 – a Wizard Magazine promotional preview comic. This book came with Wizard Magazine #91.”

  4. That reminds me… other sites what happen to total comic mayhem. Been reading it for as long as I can remember now it’s private? I’ve seen the guy who runs the site comment here before, What happened?

    1. Vic shut it down. He said he may open it up later as a blog, wasn’t sure. I think he’s just burnt out with stuff. I used his site a lot too, really nice guy.

  5. Anybody notice how Amazing Spiderman 300 True Believers reprint is selling pretty good on the Bay? There is one bidding for $60.00 right now. Pretty good for a dollar book that hasn’t even come out till March.

      1. It’s on their website only. They must be getting buyers if he’s asking that price. Some people just have more money than time, or are just plain stupid. As Carlin once said, think of how stupid the average person is (flat earthers, blindly religious, trump supporters), now, if the average person is that dumb, then that means that 5O% of the population is even dumber than that. That’s a lot of stupid people. Some of whom buy $1 for $10, I guess.

      1. I ordered 10. I originally was going to order from there but the shipping was like $7.00 so I tried MC and got them for around $13.50.

  6. Hey everyone.
Busy week at work so I haven’t had time to do anything fun yet this week. No new pickups since last week and it was sat morning before I had time to go to my LCS. At least this week I can go tomorrow.
    This week I am getting:
    Venom inc Omega
    batman 39
deadpool vs old man logan 4
    go west 1
    ice cream man 1
    jimmy’s bastards 6
    justice league 37
    nightwing 37
    spectacular spiderman 299
    star wars 42
    superman 39
    mighty thor 703
    legacy of the beast 3
Maybe a booster gold and blue beetle pop two pack I’ve had my eye on for a while now.
    Smell you later!

  7. Anyone in Central Texas, most if not all shops comics are delayed until tomorrow 1/18/2018 due Snowpocalypse here in Texas… A snowflake fell from the sky, landed on the ground and people are freaking out..

    1. I’m skipping this week. Too cold. The shops down here said they may get this weeks new comics Friday. Hell all our local news stations stayed on all day. We had icepocalypse. Should be able to get the 1:50 variant Friday. Then hopefully the j. Scott Campbell set about the ice storm next month.

        1. No… I love the cold. What gets old is the hot sun with zero rain for months at a time. That’s what gets old….

      1. I love living where I do (Toronto area). We get 4 equal seasons. Weather is in constant change. It never gets old. I love it. But I do agree, Poyo, constant heat is way worse than constant cold.

      2. Since Christmas we’ve had maybe 5 days where the temp has been above
0 degrees (and I mean F! It was about -20 degrees C). Not knowing if the roads will be bad in the morning makes it hard to plan when to wake up. Then, everyone forgets how to drive in snow and the people on the road are more dangerous than the roads themselves. My 30 min commute last Friday was 70 min. Then, you have to shovel the stuff 9ff your driveway and walk way when you get home! A few years ago we were without power for days due to ice storms! I lived in Australia for a while, I’ll take the heat and no rain any day. I guess it just depends on what you’re used to.

        1. I work mostly remote so its work from home 80% of the time for me most days. I would love it to be freezing for at least two weeks at a time… It kills off the bugs in the summer time. See… We dont have real winters here in Texas so that means we have lots of bugs and they are big too. Back in 2009, Austin went 68 straight days of 100 degrees Fahrenheit or higher…. 68 days! Yes.. That’s over two months straight of hell!!

      3. I don’t partake in the typical rat race. I refuse to do long commutes, so I don’t have to worry about the bad drivers. -20C is cold, but if you’re dressed properly, it’s not bad at all. I was up north in cottage country during the Xmas break and it was -30C up there. That’s when the cold takes on a new meaning. It literally feels ‘different’. Hard to explain. And I think Shovelling snow is great exercise and actually kinda enjoy it People pay hundreds of dollars a year to go to a gym. Winter provides a free gym. Lol. The key to shoveling snow is to push it with your arms and legs, never use your back to ‘lift’ the snow. Use a plow style shovel and push the snow beyond where you need it to go and then pull the shovel back, leaving the freshly pushed snow out of the desired area. But you are correct, Brennan, weather preferences are subjective. Why do you live in/move to Canada if you don’t like the cold Winter, Brennan? it’s kinda what we’re known for. ?

      4. Poyo that doesn’t sound like a native Texan. Plus our cold is diff. I remember coming back from Colorado a few years ago in December, Denver temp was like 20, stopped in Dallas where it was 40 and felt twice as cold as the Denver 20.

      5. Jayclue, I’m born and raised here. The time abroad was for school, but it was mostly just an excuse to travel. I’ve just always preferred the heat.
Poyo, I hear you on the bug part. Had a few run ins myself in Australia and have visited Texas. I had an aunt and uncle who moved to rural new mexico for work for a few years so my family used that as an excuse to go there! Got to go on nightly scorpian patrols around the exterior walls of the house!

  8. I just flipped through Batman #39 and there is a new hero introduced called the ‘ Gentle Man’. May be something to keep an eye on.

  9. Strangers in Paradise XXV 1
$40 table fee for a local show March 10
Gearing up for Image Expo 2018. Just noticed something interesting. The website just lists Kirkman and Remender as attending with 10 TBDs. When searching for the website, my browser fills in four of the TBDs:
Robert Kirkman. Creator : The Walking Dead, Oblivion Song, Outcast by Kirkman & Azaceta. Rick Remender. Creator : Deadly Class, Seven to Eternity, Black Science, Low. Ron Wimberly. TBD. Creator : TBD. Babs Tarr. TBD. Creator : TBD. Brenden Fletcher. TBD. Creator : TBD. Cameron Stewart. TBD. Creator : TBD.

  10. I got a few if my usual titles, nothing crazy, but my LCS just put out a few boxes of 1/2 price variants. I went through them all and pulled out an American Gods #1 Emerald City Comic-Con variant for $10.00 got the 50% off so I paid $5.00 for it. I checked the bay and it looks like its limited to 500 copies? And the recent sales were between $75.00 and $100.00 for unsigned, unslabbed copies….am I missing something and worked up over nothing or did I make a big score on this one?

  11. No new pickups for me today and nothing in my pullbox either. Since my little slip up a couple weeks ago I haven’t gotten any thing else, but I have made some big strides on my organizing.

    1. I still have never organized my books in any way other than a box for stuff to sell. It would take me 7 years to eternity to get them all done and organized.

  12. My lcs had out 4 copies of the blank SIP XXV 1 variant at cover price so I picked out the best looking copy. I thought this was supposed to be 1 per retailer. Also picked up The Further Adventures of Nick Wilson 1 to try.

  13. Highlight of my week was the purchase of Batman 608 second print signed by Jim Lee with certificate of authenticity for $50. I’m a huge Batman fan, didn’t have it, couldn’t pass it up!

    1. Sweet pick up. I’m currently buying up the Hush story. I’ve current got my eye on a NM #612. Priced kinda high though.

  14. All in all, a pretty quiet but good week for me. I hit up a 2 for 1 sale on the weekend and got some decent flippable books. Not much going on at the LCS’ either. I was only really looking for Ice Cream Man, but sadly none were to be found. My pick ups this week were:

      1. @diehardrushfan, Ive partied at Lifesons house in Aurora when I was in high school. Went to school with his son.

  15. Slippin’ and slidin’ to the LCS today thanks to yet more snowfall. Landed most of what I was looking for, but no Suicide Forest #1 (they rarely have Amigo books), no Under #2 (again, very hit-or-miss with the Titan books), no Kill or Be Killed #15, and a couple other whiffs from my list.

    1. No luck in my area either. Everyone is sold out. Even Midtown. Anyone know where to get one that is reasonably priced?

    2. All my shops were delayed so I should know today once they send out updates they have new books on the walls..

      1. Looks like it might not be until Friday for most shops new books. One shop just updated claiming they’re not getting theirs today.

  18. Forget to mention the missle scare here in Hawaii. Was going to message you guys here to tell you you can take one of every first appearance off the census. But all ended up well.

    1. Enough comic books should provide a bomb proof shelter right? Just stack them up along the walls in the long boxes.. that’s what I’d do.

  19. Hi there. My first language is French so I can help you with Coipel pronunciation. The c and the p are the same than in English. The “oi” is the same sound that the wha in what. You must say the “el” exactly like the el in Kal-El. So it’s C-wha-p-el.
    Hope it helps 😉

  20. Doctor Strange recent issues.
    Batman variants.
    Avengers recent.
    Kirby homage variants X 12.
    Thanos.
    Legacy head variants…all great!
