One Year Later: Spec Review for 1/18/17

What up CHU!?! Shawn B., One Year Later Investigator, back with another One Year Later round up, where we take a look at some of the comics that Anthony, Mel, and Poyo specced on one year ago. Their specs turn out to be quick flips, slow burns, straight up misses, straight up winners and on and on. Sometimes they spec with their hearts out of their passion for comics. Sometimes they spec based on data. And sometimes they spec based off the word on the street. Either way, all their specs appeal to a few or many collectors whether it is due to them having similar taste in writing or art, or just an opportunity for a collector to flip a book and make money to “support their habit”. So, this is our weekly chance to look back at how some of our buys from a year ago are doing today.
Winners

Gamora #2 Incentive Francesco Mattina Variant Cover – Mel and Anthony Pick
Original Value: $30 Current Value: $110
No shocker here! 2nd place in CHU’s Variant of the Year Contest. Bad ass cover. I never got one and unfortunately never will at those prices.
Near Misses

Mighty Captain Marvel #1 Incentive Alex Ross Variant – Mel Pick
Original Value: $80 Current Value: $80
Still some activity on this one a year later. Usually the variants that don’t make it drop considerably after a year. This one is holding strong close to original value so Near Misses it is.
Misses

Curse Words #1 – Anthony and Poyo Pick
Original Value: $4 Current Value: $4 or Less
This one has fizzled out. Unsure of any Quick Flip value. Even the 1 per Store Variants are going for pretty cheap.

The Few #1 – Anthony & Poyo Pick
Original Value: $5 Current Value: $5 or Less
I love hanging onto #1 Image Comics. You just never know what will get optioned.

Dollface #1 – Anthony & Poyo Pick
Original Value: $5 Current Value: $5 Still available at Midtown
The Halloween Comic Fest issue is still doing well considering it was free. Also the Diamond Retailer Summit variant is doing well, Dollface’s first appearance.
Unspecced Winners

He-Man / Thundercats #4
Original Value: $4 Current Value: $10
This entire series has taken off.

Star Wars: Doctor Aphra #3 Variant Juan Gimenez Star Wars 40th Anniversary Cover
Original Value: $4 Current Value: $22
Some of these Anniversary Variants are doing really well.

  1. The Gamora variant is still selling? I have a hard time spending anything more than $10 for a comic book. It’s too risky. I guess if it’s for the PC, but honestly If you have the money to buy more then one why would you be trying to flip comics for a profit?

      1. Yes and they haven’t legalized marijuana here in Texas.. once they do, everything in my garden is being converted into a nice cash cow.. tomatoes are yummy to eat but I don’t have enough land to turn that buck a pound into a nice profit.. 🙂

    1. Yup.. I dropped the few I picked up at Half Price about a month ago. You win some, you lose some. That’s just how life works..

      1. After staring at them with contempt for the last year, I choose to look at selling them at a discount as a win. No losing here, Poyo. ?

        1. Yeah, you can either let them sit in your long box until the day you die. I guess that’s the only way you’re gonna really lose. Last I checked, you don’t take anything with you when you die.. but it’s kind of like winning too, no more worries when you die.

  2. A few months ago I found a shop that had a ton of those Dr. Aphra #3 40th anniversary variants, and over the course of 2 weeks I got them all.

  3. I was going to grab copies of curse word and doll face. Good thing I didn’t. I didn’t really enjoy God hates astronauts and knowing he was drawing this, I passed.
