Poyo's Spec and Drek for January 24th, 2018

Last week was exciting for us comic flippers and speculators. If you missed one book, there was likely another book you could grab to flip and sell. One surprise I think was Avengers with the Voyager appearance. I don’t think I’ve ever seen an Avengers book heat up in the same week of release like #676 did.

As last week was exciting, this week still looks good but I’m not banking on as many winners but there’s certainly some good reading if nothing heats up.
DC/Vertigo Pick
Hands down this weeks pick goes to Teen Titan’s #12 2nd print. As hot as this book (the first print) has been, this 2nd print is about 3 months late but should not be overlooked.
Being so many months since the 1st print was released, this could have slipped past some shops orders and might be just as hard to find as the 1st print. We all know 2nd prints can actually go up in value over 1st prints and with a lot of people missing out on the first print and maybe not willing to spend the premium value on it now, they’ll be seeking this one out.
So grab’em if you see’em.
Also don’t forget to pick up Joshua Middleton’s Batgirl #19 Cover B. The Penguin background just makes this variant that much more cooler if you ask me.
Marvel Pick
There’s some nice action going on with Marvel this week, some books selling out already online but this weeks pick for me is the Dell’Otto Marvel Two In One #2 Variant.
This book isn’t going to command a lot of readers and most shops will likely go light on ordering these, especially likely looking over the variant covers.
So this one might be the one to grab, especially for you Dell Otto fans out there.
I’m the first to dislike covers that don’t actually depict the title they adorn but I like Dell Otto so if I see one, I’m not passing it up.
Indie Pick
Not a whole lot going on with indie books this week but one stood out to me as a long time Mega Man fan (childhood memories), this weeks pick goes to Udon Entertainment’s Mega Man Mastermix #1 Rob Porter Classic X-Men Homage cover.
I’ll probably be picking up the regular covers as well, but if you can find this one at cover or fairly cheap, grab it. It’s already sold out at most retailers online.
I don’t expect this to pick up any heat or long term value but it’s more of the throwback to my childhood pick and read.
From the description:

“The Blue Bomber returns to comics through the classic stories of Japanese artist Hitoshi Ariga – available for the first time in color! In a world where humans and robots live and work together, six powerful robots have suddenly turned against their programming and set their sights on causing chaos and destruction! Only one heroic robot stands in their path – Mega Man, the greatest creation of Dr. Light! “

Small Publisher Pick
Not a likely spec or possible heat up title but just looks like good fun.
This weeks small publisher pick goes to Vinegar Teeth #1.  I love this style of artwork on the cover as well. I hope the interiors carry over the same style.
From the description:

As a human being, Artie Buckle is a grade-A schmuck. But he’s a pretty damn fine cop. Good thing, because Brick City is under siege from its citizenry and only an unlikely partnership with a mysterious, tentacled, extra-dimensional being can put an end to the escalating crime problem. Thing is, there’s a danger far greater than cub scouts robbing banks . . . oh my! Across space and time lies a far greater threat, not only to Brick City but to the world! Holy crap! Can the two get past their differences and save the planet? Well, of course they can, but getting there is gonna be a helluva fun ride.
An epic genre mash-up: horror, humor, crime, and science fiction!

Now on with the dreaded “avoid” pick, every writer and artist worst nightmare when it comes to selling their hard work.
This week there’s nothing that really stands out to totally avoid. My only advice would be, pick and choose wisely the books you think you can flip short term and or long term.
And don’t clear the shelf on new comic book day. Wait until Thursday at the minimum if you really feel like clearing the shelf at your local shop and they allow it.
That’s all I got for this week. Happy New Comic Book Day!

      1. I still have a first print but its getting tucked away in the PC for the long term gamble years from now…. Hoping this new character sticks around and stay popular.

      2. I only got one B cover of the 1st print, but I have a bunch of the A covers that I’m holding and hoping for big things too. It’s just too bad that they stopped doing newsstands right before this issue, I would have loved to have a couple of newsstands for this issue.

    1. Didn’t know TT #12 2nd was due out. Glad I came here tonight. I wasn’t going to be able to make it to the comic store tomorrow so I picked some up for cover online. Ebay asking prices are ranging from $8 to $24 for this right now so it will be interesting to see where it goes. Curious to see what the print run will be on this.

  1. Maybe this would be a good breakdown of demand, print run and availability to determine value and profit size (if selling):
Demand + Small Print Run + Limited Availability = Larger Value and or Profit Margin
Demand + Small Print Run + Moderate Availability = Moderate Value
Demand + Small Print Run + Easily Availability = Low to Moderate Value
Demand + Moderate Print Run + Limited Availability = Moderate to Larger Value/Profit
Demand + Large Print Run + Limited Availability = Low to Large (This can really range depending on the comic I think)
Demand + Moderate Print Run + Easy Availability = Low to Moderate Value
Demand + Large Print Run + Easy Availability = Low to Moderate Value
Zero Demand + Print Run (Small or Large Print Run) + Availability (Easy to Hard To Find) = Worthless.
    Print runs can affect value.
    Availability can affect value.
The ultimate thing that determines value is demand, you take that away and whatever it is your trying to sell is worthless if no one wants it. There’s likely more combinations we could come up with but I think that’s a good gist of it.

    1. I know.. I know.. nothing really stood out this week to avoid. I mean, I can tell people to avoid Grimm Fairy Tales from Zenescope but that’s kind of a given already.. 😉
