One Year Later: Spec Review for 1/25/17

What up CHUllectors!?! Shawn B., the One Year Later Investigator,  back with another One Year Later round up, where we take a look at some of the comics that Anthony, Mel, and Poyo specced on one year ago. Their specs turn out to be quick flips, slow burns, straight up misses, straight up winners and on and on. Sometimes they spec with their hearts out of their passion for comics. Sometimes they spec based on data. And sometimes they spec based off the word on the street. Either way, all their specs appeal to a few or many collectors whether it is due to them having similar taste in writing or art, or just an opportunity for a collector to flip a book and make money to “support their habit”. So, this is our weekly chance to look back at how some of our buys from a year ago are doing today.

Winners

Batman ’66 Meets Wonder Woman ’77 #1 Variant Alex Ross Cover – Mel Pick
Original Value: $4 Current Value: $8
Usually can’t go wrong with these characters together and Alex Ross drawing them.

Savage #3 Incentive Lewis Larosa Sketch Cover – Mel, Anthony Pick
Original Value: $60 Current Value: $140
Valiant’s Larosa Variants seem to be pretty popular in many series. And we all know #1 and 2’s variants of this series did really well.

Star Wars #27 Variant Ryan Stegman Star Wars 40th Anniversary Cover – Poyo Pick
Original Value: $4 Current Value: $9
Wish I jumped on this 40th Anniversary Variant train from the start. That being said, some are not that popular.

Slayer Repentless #1 – Anthony & Mel (Cover B) Pick
Original Value: $4 Current Value: $9
SLAYER!!!!!!
Near Misses

Dregs #1 – Anthony & Poyo (reluctantly) Pick
Original Value: $4 Current Value: $4
Still some sales activity a year later but still a weird one to gauge. Series (1-4) sets have sold for $5 while single issues of #1 have sold for $9. Since Black Mask put out the whole series in about 6 months (WOW!), we will show a little love and stick this one in Near Misses.
Misses

Deadpool #25 Variant Mark Brooks Cover – Mel Pick
Original Value: $50 Current Value: $???
Zero recent sales of raw copies so no accurate way to determine value. Plenty for sale but nothing selling puts this great cover in the Misses section. It was a quick flip though as early copies sold for around $100.

Wonder Woman Odyssey of the Amazons #1 – Poyo Pick
Original Value: $4 Current Value: $4 Still available at on-line retailers.
I jumped on this train as well.

Hillbilly #5 – Poyo Pick
Original Value: $4 Current Value: $4 Still available at on-line retailers.
Even the early issues have started to drop in value a bit.
Unspecced Winners – None this week.

  1. Odyssey of the Amazons was such a letdown for me, the story did nothing for me, maybe thats why it went just.
The Dregs just sucked. I cant even believe I picked a Black Mask book. I know at some point last year I swore I was never going to spec another Black Mask book again…. The only Black Mask I buy nowadays is Space Riders.

    1. And poor Hillbilly… Retailers caught on after issue 1 and started heavy orders. I think the delays are killing its potential as well but yeah, I can still find most issues past 2 on my local comic shop shelves…

  2. Just scored tickets to the slayer farewell tour. Can add a meet and greet for 300. What do you think? Go for it?

    1. Depends if this is indeed a farewell tour….or is this like Kiss and they have an annual farewell tour to as many places as they can go.
