One Year Later: Spec Review for 2/8/17

What up CHUllectors!?! Shawn B., the One Year Later Investigator, back with another One Year Later round up, where we take a look at some of the comics that Anthony, Mel, Terry and Poyo specced on one year ago. Their specs turn out to be quick flips, slow burns, straight up misses, straight up winners and on and on. Sometimes they spec with their hearts out of their passion for comics. Sometimes they spec based on data. And sometimes they spec based off the word on the street. Either way, all their specs appeal to a few or many collectors whether it is due to them having similar taste in writing or art, or just an opportunity for a collector to flip a book and make money to “support their habit”. So, this is our weekly chance to look back at how some of our buys from a year ago are doing today.

Light week for the guys. Most recommendations were for good reads.
Winners

Red Sonja #2 J. Scott Campbell Variant Cover (available on eBay) – Anthony Pick
Original Value: $4 Current Value: $6
Not a huge winner but to me this one along with JSC’s #1 cover are going to continue to slowly go up in value.
Quick Flip Winners

Deadpool the Duck #3 Incentive Walsh Variant (available on eBay)– Mel Pick
Original Value: $15 Quick Flip Value: $25 Current Value: $18
Though current sales average $18, there has only been a few of them. And there was more upside for this one as a quick flip. Sold out at on-line retailers.

Guardians of the Galaxy #17 Incentive Stephanie Hans Variant Cover (available on eBay)– Mel Pick
Original Value: $15 Quick Flip Value: $25 Current Value: $18
Weird. Pretty much the same exact situation as DtD #3.
Misses

Kingpin #1 Bill Sienkiewicz Variant Cover (available on eBay)– Mel & Poyo Pick
Original Value: $65 Current Value: $65 or less. Still available at Midtown.
Unsure of any Quick Flip value here.
Unspecced Winners

Star Wars: Doctor Aphra #4 Variant Pepe Larraz 40th Anniversary Cover (available on eBay)-
Original Value: $4 Current Value: $20
And another one for the anniversary variants winners.

  1. Yeah, that Kingpin never caught on for collectors. I think this was near the peak for Bill’s work and most retailers kept that one jacked up in price, deterring most collectors for the mini-series.

  2. And most of the 40th Anniversary are slow heats.. They don’t seem to heat up immediately but have been slowly creeping up the value over time as likely more collectors are seeking them out. Plus the Doctor Aphra’s were a bit harder to come by for most since most shops don’t order as many of these as the regular Star Wars title.
