One Year Later: Spec Review for 2/15/17

What up CHUllectors!?! Shawn B., the One Year Later Investigator,  back with another One Year Later round up, where we take a look at some of the comics that Anthony, Mel, Terry and Poyo specced on one year ago. Their specs turn out to be quick flips, slow burns, straight up misses, straight up winners and on and on. Sometimes they spec with their hearts out of their passion for comics. Sometimes they spec based on data. And sometimes they spec based off the word on the street. Either way, all their specs appeal to a few or many collectors whether it is due to them having similar taste in writing or art, or just an opportunity for a collector to flip a book and make money to “support their habit”. So, this is our weekly chance to look back at how some of our buys from a year ago are doing today.
Light week again.
Winners

Venom #4 Joe Jusko Corner Box Variant (available on eBay) – Mel Pick
Original Value: $4 Current Value: $7
Not a huge win but a win none the less. Mel mentioned in his original spec for this that retailers had to jump through hoops to get this one. Not sure if they were hoops of fire or just hoops.

God Country #2 (available on eBay) – Anthony & Poyo Pick
Original Value: $4 Current Value: $7
Another one that is not a huge win but a win all the same. This series had heat while it was coming out.
Quick Flip Winners

God Country #1 Second Printing (available on eBay) – Anthony Pick
Original Value: $4 Quick Flip Value: $8 Current Value: $4-6
Quick flip would have doubled your dollars!
Unspecced Winners – No Unspecced Winners from this week.

  1. Hi Shawn! Thanks again for your continued work on this segment—always look forward to it. One thing though; your God Country #1 2nd print is a complete red cover—you’re showing the 1st print or #1A cover.

  2. I still have a stack of God Country 2nd print that I haven’t been able to move. I also have a complete set for the PC to sell at a later time.

      1. I’m happy I dumped all mine last spring at its peak. I only kept a set of signed copies of 1-4 or so….
We haven’t seen the last of God Country (maybe a movie option) but I can live with my great flips of these.

      2. The one thing I’ve learned over the years is sell sell sell. Rarely do new comics hold value. Think of how many key issues there are worth over $100 since 1990. Not counting variants it’s very few.

  3. I have several sets and I only sell them locally….dumping them on eBay is a poor short term solution—we haven’t seen the last of Valofax et al….

    1. That’s fair enough—not necessarily early, but certainly his “breakout” books. I personally think that there is a large amount of value there—yourself and others might disagree….. and that is what makes a market.

  4. I sold my sets around the time issue #6 came out. Made decent money. Ive seen Cates in interveiws where he has stated that the God Country story was very much a one off idea that he wanted, and was able, to do. I dont think we will see a sequel to this series any time soon. Im glad i got out on this when i did.

    1. I find that there are many fans (and more all of the time) of Cates’ work. Given his most recent work on Thanos and Doctor Strange, his previous efforts will only become more popular—I personally think they are great long term holds and have zero compunctions about future desirability.

      1. No arguments there, Vann. To each their own. But the God Country series, even in terms of 20 years from now, is not considered early work for Cates. He had done quite a bit of stuff before God Country. Im not trying to put the series down. I enjoyed it. I personally dont see any long term, substantial spec value. But it is a nice set to own.

        1. I think unless its optioned in the future or he does a second volume, I think we’ve already seen its peak in terms of flip value. Will it continue to be a $10-$20 #1 book… most likely. But I’m with Jay on this one…. But I also hope I’m wrong.
