Poyo's Spec and Drek for Feb. 21, 2017

This year sure has been exciting so far for selling comics and who would have thought the biggest books are being pumped out by Marvel.

So what’s in store for us this week? Well, it looks like it’s going to be another winning week for Marvel again if you ask me. I got two Marvel picks this week and it’s another slow week for the Small guys and Indie books.
DC/Vertigo Picks
For me, this is the only thing DC has got going for it this week and one other book, solely for it’s cover art.
Middleton is the only reason I even pick up Aquaman books. This is one of the few titles I don’t even bother reading either (I gave it a go with Rebirth launch but quickly lost interest).
So this weeks pick obviously is one of the DC Killer B’s for Aquaman #33. Already sold out at most online retailers, grab a copy if you see one.

This is that type of artwork they should have made a virgin cover and slap on some posters, it’s just that good. I don’t expect that it’s going to heat up quick but it could be a long term hold for sure. But why would you even want to let this one go? This is the book I buy to throw in the PC to be tucked away with my other “precious-es”.
The other DC book that’s got my attention is the Cover B Coipel variant for Batman #41. I don’t think this one will heat up either and I still like the Middleton cover more but this is just great artwork if you ask me. I pick up Batman just on principle alone but when the covers are great like this, it makes it all the more worthwhile.
Marvel Picks
This one is a no brain pick. Anyone who’s been paying attention knows what’s coming and everyone will be debating when and what is the first appearance.
So with that said, it’s Amazing Spider-man #796 (available on eBay) where we might get a cameo or possibly even the first appearance. 795 is still blowing up as an easy $15 to $20 book in the secondary market.

The next Marvel pick is another book that’s been on fire lately. Who would have though for 3 or 4 weeks that an Avengers title would be selling out at local shops and going back for 2nd prints.
So this weeks pick is Avengers #681 (available on eBay) which is also already sold out or selling out online, with sales on the secondary market already above cover price.
Is it Banner Hulk that rejoins the Avengers or someone else? I think this issue we find out who’s been making all that noise in the cave.
So don’t pass this book up if you see it.
Indie Pick
I really don’t see a whole lot going on in the Indie world this week.
This makes me sad as I’m a lover of Indie books. But regardless, I feel obligated to find and pick a book so this weeks pick goes to Shiver Bureau #1 (available on eBay) from Scout Comics.
I still have mixed feelings about this one. It’s caught my attention to check out but since I haven’t seen any previews of this book yet, it’s still going to certainly be the skim and read at the local shop before deciding to pick up a copy.
Here’s to hoping it ends up as a great read but I’m not expecting this to heat up or be any type of spec play.
Small Publisher Pick
I love the Simpsons. Seriously, when they ran that 600 episode marathon on FXX last year I think I probably watched at least 50-60% of the shows that entire week of back to back to back episodes.
So with that said, I pick up Simpsons books and when I saw that Krusty the Clown has his own one-shot out this week, it’s a must pick up.
Don’t expect to flip this. Don’t expect this to be valuable.
Pick this book up if you love the Simpsons and really enjoy reading funnies while you go number 2, because that’s what I’ll be doing. Nothing beats alone time away from the wife and kids reading funny comics while you hide in the bathroom.
The other honorable mention goes to Ice Cream Man #2 (available on eBay)  from Image. I flipped all my number ones for a really nice profit. So I’ll be picking up these where I can in hopes to flip them. I haven’t even been bothering in keeping copies for the personal collection, I’ve been blessed with some digital review copies. This series has been easy flip money and I don’t expect nothing less with issue #2.

Now on with the dreaded “avoid” pick, every writer and artist worst nightmare when it comes to selling their hard work.
Mark Millar is making my life easy. This week’s avoid is Hit-Girl #1. Seriously, it has 7 different covers. Mark Millar is a great writer but he really needs to tone down the number of covers for his books, it makes him look desperate for cash or something.
The only thing this book has going for it is, it’s not Romita Jr. doing the interior artwork.
Expect this book to be easy to find and obtain if you really feel the need to buy it. You’ll likely find copies in the dollar bin not too far in the near future as well if you really want to save a few bucks. But if you somehow do miss out on this and any of it’s 7 covers, I’m sure by Friday we’ll have an Image Press Release that claims it’s being “rushed back” for a second printing to meet with demand. Sigh!

  1. Will it say that on the covers for Hit Girl? ‘Featuring Art Not Done By John Romita JR.’. I might actually buy it copy if it did.

  2. I’m glad you didn’t say avoid pumpkin head. I kind of got all the covers. You’re pretty spot on your avoid pick.

    1. I don’t actually spec on Dynamite books but I’m not as big a horror fan as Anthony is but I loved Pumpkinhead as a kid. I was going to have it as a pick but figured I’d leave that pick all to Anthony.

      1. I was also a fan when I was a kid. If by “fan” you mean scared to death after watching the VHS copy from the local video store.
I really thought about ordering the movie variant cover but it creeped me out to much. I don’t need that in my house….. Staring at me from a long box…..waiting….watching…..
