Poyo’s Spec and Drek for April 11th, 2018

New comic book day is upon us once again. The day we comic collecting nerds and comic flippers look forward to each and every week. Even slow weeks, we still find ourselves heading out to the local shops in hopes of landing some great books.

Seriously, 2018 has started out so hot but we all know good things can’t last forever. This week is probably one of the least exciting weeks for me. There’s a few Marvel titles I’m looking forward to and not a whole lot going on in the small publisher and indie world. But never fear, there’s still a few I’m looking forward to.

DC/Vertigo Pick
It was this one or Artgerm’s Supergirl, but this one won me over. This weeks pick goes to Justice League of America #28 (available on eBay).

There’s a lot of Mattina fans out there and now that he’s starting to dabble with covers for DC, these will likely start to pick up higher print runs when retailers start catching on.

That’s why this weeks pick won me over Artgerm’s Supergirl. As talented as Artgerm is, to me it’s been over done now for the Supergirl Cover B’s. Retailers have caught on and these are easy to nab for the PC and PC only.

Marvel Pick

Donny Cates has done a stupendous job on Thanos. So that’s this weeks pick in the Marvel universe, Thanos #18 (available on eBay), which I believe is the last in this series. Someone correct me if I’m wrong though.

Who else could introduce a new character that ended up being an old existing character but still create buzz around such character for collectors to seek these issues out?

I’m sad to see Thanos end though. I know there will be another series eventually but it would be nice to get a good long ongoing series for Thanos.

Indie Pick

Not a whole lot going on in the Indie world for comics so I have to throw out more love for Pau’s Atlas & Axis.

I love the art. It reminds me of those Sunday morning funnies but on better quality paper and more detailed artwork.

The story has been great as well for this series. I can’t recall if this is ongoing or a mini-series but I’m hoping it’s an ongoing series. Someone comment if they know otherwise.

The warriors come home to find their village in ruins so they set off on a new journey. Aren’t all issues a new journey? That’s how it goes in the comic book world, the journey’s never end.

Small Publisher Pick

This was another toss up. I actually got a digital review copy but have yet to read it.

But this weeks pick goes to Crude #1 from Image Comics.

Image number ones can always be hit or miss. I really hate how they do their new releases though. It’s always the first 3 are on time (since they require the first 3 from the creators ahead of time) but it seems if a series really takes off, the creators are likely overwhelmed with success and have to scramble for new content which sometimes backfires on them.

Seems only some seasoned creators and writers can pull off a successful independent book. Don’t get me wrong though, there’s lots of writers that are great at writing but some need that push from the bigger publishers along with ideas to get their creativeness flowing for us to enjoy.

A shout out to BOOM!’s new Robocop series though also hitting stands. It was my number 2 pick for small publisher. Like Dredd, I’m a Robocop fan. Love me some cheesy cop drama but when done right and done dark, are great reads.

Now on with the dreaded avoid pick, every writer and artist worst nightmare when it comes to selling their hard work.

I just don’t get the vibes it’s going to last long but this weeks avoid pick goes to Domino #1 from Marvel.

I get it,  I know why they’re doing this but it just doesn’t sit well with me. There’s a bazillion variants for this new ongoing series and since she’s in Deadpool 2 movie, it might catch some fans but I don’t think it’s going to last long. I just don’t see Domino having the legs to stand with her own series. She’s a sidekick after thought if you ask me. Sure she’ll be cool in the movie but that doesn’t mean I want to read her as the main character in her own title series. Maybe I’ll be wrong and Gail Simone will pull it off. But I wouldn’t go as far as to say this series will heat up or have any spec within it.

So if you do buy a copy, buy one copy to check it out or even save yourself some money and find someone selling the digital redemption code off eBay.
And the J. Scott Campbell cover is just awful. It’s like he tried too hard to change it up by not doing the normal Mary Jane pose he does with all his covers. Why is she squatting like that? Looks like the pose one would take if they’re going No. 2 out in the woods and avoiding any runoffs with her heels kicked up like they are. Save your cash for sure. Do not spend a penny over cover for such a cover I say.

And the Midtown Exclusive variant has Harley Quinn vibes all over it. I hope Marvel isn’t trying to make Domino the Harley Quinn of Marvel. Nope, nope, nope!

That’s all folks, until next week.

      1. No worries. I read your article every week.
I will also be sad when Cates is done with Thanos. Boo!

      2. Cates will be writing the new Venom volume. It will be interesting to see if he can inject just as much life into Venom as he did Thanos.

      1. Poyo, did you ever play the Robocop VHS game? I must have seen that flick about 1000000 times. Clarence Boddicker is one of the best bad guys in cinematic history, imo. Very under rated.

        1. VHS game? Didn’t they make a VCR game? But yes, I still stop to watch that movie if it’s on TV. I lived in Dallas during the time they made this film as they filmed a majority of the film in Dallas. Most scenes they did pretty good at hiding the fact they’re in Dallas but there’s a few car scenes you can see the Dallas skyline in the background, particularly the Reunion Tower is a dead giveaway.
