One Year Later: Spec Review for 4/12/17

What up CHUaholics!! Shawn B., the One Year Later Investigator,  back again, spec it, collect it, let’s begin! Man, I am getting bad with my jokes the older I get. So, I wanted to take a moment to mention that last week marks the one-year anniversary for these one year later reviews. Thanks to everyone who reads this post. It really is a lot of fun for me. And a big thanks to Anthony, Poyo and Mel for allowing me to call out their specs whether they are good or bad. Lastly, a big shout out and thank you to Anthony for creating CHU and keeping it going strong. Forget the specs and flipping and all that, what I love about this site is the excitement that it gives me each week. Whether it’s the new releases, Anthony’s spoilers, Alana’s Weekend Specs, Blind Adam’s Hidden Gems, it all keeps me excited about past, current and future comics. So, a big thanks to everyone who contributes to this site. You all help to keep my drive for collecting strong and on point. Jeez you’d think I’m accepting a Nobel over here with all my thank yous. Like I think I cured something.
Winners

Z Nation #1 Incentive Lucio Parrillo Virgin Cover (available on eBay)– Mel Pick
Original Value: $12 Current Value: $20+
While this one isn’t quite on fire now, but I remember them selling well in the beginning. There are a ton of Parrillo virgin covers doing really well on the aftermarket. If you see any cheap…grab ‘em!

Heathen #3 (available on eBay) – Anthony & Poyo Pick
Original Value: $4 Current Value: $9
Winner, winner Heathen dinner! Still going strong! and dang if it didn’t hurt get optioned for a movie after this got posted.
Quick Flip Winners

Solar Flare #1 (available on eBay) – Anthony & Poyo Pick
Original Value: $4 Quick Flip Value: $10 Current Value: $4
The heat here has settled down to luke warm. The self-published issues are still doing pretty well. It seems harder to find the second printing of this one. Though they were once sold out Midtown has copies for cover price again. Still a great read!

Godshaper #1 Variant David Aja Cover (available on eBay)– Mel Pick
Original Value: $4 Quick Flip Value: $10 Current Value: $5
Cool cover but it’s BOOM! and not a crazy popular series. Unless the series is optioned I see no value down the road here.
Near Misses

Deadpool Vs. Punisher #1 (available on eBay)– Anthony Pick
Original Value: $4 Current Value: $5
Putting this in Near Misses because there is still quite a bit of sales activity going on for this one. Copies still at on line retailers for cover and lots of sold listings on the bay from $3 – 9. Sets of the 5 issue series sold for $20 – 40. I’m gonna check this one in another year.
Misses

American Gods #2 Bill Sienkiewicz Variant (available on eBay)– Mel Pick
Original Value: $3 Current Value: $3
Still available for cover or less.
Probably not a strong enough series to boost the value here.

Deadpool vs Punisher #1 Incentive Greg Hildebrandt Variant (available on eBay)– Mel Pick
Original Value: $9 Current Value: $5
I gotta say that in my findings, very few variants stand the test of time for value.

Guardians of the Galaxy #19 Incentive Mike Deodato Jr. Variant (available on eBay)– Mel Pick
Original Value: $30 Current Value: $8
Again, most variants do not hold value unless they are part of a key issue or run, have truly exceptional artwork or are incredibly rare but even then, there needs to be some popularity.
Unspecced Winners

Black Panther and the Crew #1 Jim Cheung Marvel Hip Hop
(available on eBay) – Original Value: $4 Current Value: $7

Classic Popeye #57 Incentive Bill Sewart Variant
(available on eBay)– Original Value: $10 Current Value: $25
Man some of these Classic Popeye Variants are going for insane money!

Wonder Woman #20 Jenny Frison Variant
(available on eBay)– Original Value: $3 Current Value: $8

  1. I found a copy of Godshaper #1 about a week after its release, picked it up to try the quick flip. The heat was already gone. I sold it for cover about 1-2 months ago. Im sitting on my Solar Flare books, self published series and a few copies of various Scout #1 variants. I feel like this series will be optioned at some point.

  2. I sell so much deadpool crap. I bought everything I could find back in the 90s. I couldn’t stand that character then, but just liked his suit and because he was a rip off. Its funny because I told my wife when the movie was announced that this is going to be huge for fox, and bandwagoners. People are stupid and like stupid shit because it’s popular. The movie was good, but it’s like…ha ha that was funny and never watch it again. Disney is going to drop that character when they receive the rights. I guess I just don’t see what others do. Okay, Deadpool rant done. I sold about 7 of the vs punisher for above cover. I still have a couple I think.

    1. I agree – I only see it for $50 and $80 on e-bay – I was excited to see it was listed as only $8. Don’t know where all the $8 copies went….

      1. Just because they’re listed at such prices doesn’t mean they’re worth such prices. Click the “Sold” button on the left side and you’ll see all the most recents around the $8 range Shawn mentioned. 🙂

      2. Example, here’s one that sold after bids for a whopping $2.25 back on March 22.
        https://www.ebay.com/itm/Guardians-of-the-Galaxy-19-Variant-NM-Gem-Wow/372238430358?hash=item56ab23b096:g:KsoAAOSwARtamtvc
Couple of others around same time went for $3.25 each. All as actual auctions with bidders, which to me is true demand value. With that said, I wouldn’t pay over $10 for the cover since the market demand seems to be setting the value price, not the few who feel they likely need to sell at the higher premiums since they likely bought at such premiums. 🙂
