Poyo’s Spec and Drek for May 30th, 2018

I hope everyone enjoyed their Memorial Day off (for thos in the U.S. who had the day off). There’s no better way to celebrate those who sacrificed their lives so we can whip out the BBQ and drink some beer on our day off.

For a 5th Wednesday in the month, we usually tend to see slower and smaller weeks of new books from publishers.

But this week seems like it has a wee bit more than the past few weeks. This week might even get me to venture out to the shop since I pretty much skipped the past two weeks (just a quick stop while running errands last week to check out the Middleton Cover B cover availability).

DC/Vertigo Pick
Aquaman Jabberjaw Special #1 is this weeks pick. A very slow DC week but you can’t pass up a Middleton cover.
He alone is likely boosting Aquaman sales just for the covers he does for them.
I sure hope DC is spreading the love to the guy who makes them money just for his artwork.
Pick up a copy for the cover. The description has zero appeal to me for reading though. We all saw what happened with BG #23 last week. Again I don’t expect this one to have the same success but it is already selling out online at some retailers.

Marvel Pick
Even with it’s billion covers, this weeks pick goes to Amazing Spider-Man #800 but I’m only going to tell you to grab a regular cover A from Alex Ross.

There’s a Dell Otto cover but it likely will carry a hefty price tag. If you want that cover, wait a while, I’m sure you can snag one for cheaper unless of course you snag one at cover price.
But Ross is a great artist and this is by far the best cover I think out of them all.

Avoid the store specific variants unless you just want one for the personal collection. I see zero spec for those if there’s any on this Goliath issue #800. Seriously though, pick the one cover you like, spending $10 a book on dozens of covers will only make your bank account smaller and your wife/husband unhappy.

Indie Pick
This book caught my attention as my indie pick for this week.

Out from Red Anvil, Mazscara #1 hits stands (and likely not all of them as I expect a very small print run).

This is definitely one to keep an eye out for to check out for you horror fans.
From the description:

After committing suicide, Victoria Starfield is saved by her animal spirit only to be resurrected as code name Mazscara, to protect her fans and any child in Los Angeles targeted by the evil Tung. With every life she saves, she brings herself closer to her own salvation.

Small Publisher Pick
Out from After Shock comics comes the second volume of Pestilence Story of Satan #1.

I really enjoyed the first story arc of this series and was hoping for more.

So now we have it and this one is already selling out online. I don’t think it’s going to be too hard to come by but this is the book I can see getting a media option and coming to our screens one day.

Maybe it can be a great replacement zombie story for us Walking Dead fans who are tired of The Walking Dead nowadays.

Pick up a copy and pick up the first volume if you haven’t done so already.

Now on with the dreaded “avoid” pick, every writer and artist worst nightmare when it comes to selling their hard work.

It’s a pick and avoid this week. Hands down this is a no brainer. Avoid buying multiple copies of Amazing Spider-Man #800 and only buy a higher ratio variant if you can snag it at cover price.

Why? There’s no spec here and if there is, Cover A is your best bet. So if you are so inclined on buying more than one copy in hopes one day these will be part of your retirement package, just stick with Cover A.

That’s all I got this week.

  1. I was planning on living luxuriously on profits made from ASM 800, and I was going to retire on my future profits from ASM 900. Thats still the plan no matter how drekkie you think it is.

      1. You can barbecue it, boil it, broil it, bake it, saute it…..pineapple shrimp, lemon shrimp, coconut shrimp…

        1. ….. pepper shrimp, shrimp soup, shrimp stew, shrimp salad, shrimp and potatoes, shrimp burger, shrimp sandwich….

    1. Yeah, check out the spoilers Anthony posted. I’m still not going heavy myself. 1st appearance doesnt always amount to heating up or becoming valuable.

  2. With ASM #800 sporting a $9.99 cover, our friends at Marvel already built in their own spec .. 😉
