Poyo’s Spec and Drek for June 6th, 2018

Welcome once again to Poyo’s spec and the dreaded drek this week.

Not a whole lot going on this week despite being a more active week for new books. A bunch of new Marvel books, mostly reboots of existing books. This week doesn’t look big for indie or small publishers but still a few to check out.

DC/Vertigo Pick
I don’t always read DC books but I must admit they’re getting my business for just their cover B books.

Another sweet cover from Mattina hits stands this week for Deathstroke #32.

I don’t even read Deathstroke. I actually have zero desire to read Deathstroke but I find myself with Deathstroke books now in my collection.
We can give applause to DC for getting people to buy their books without having a bazillion covers for each book.

Marvel Pick
Despite the amount of covers being released for this book and the other #1 (most aren’t really new #1 books, they’re just reboots) books hitting stands this week, my pick goes to Ant-Man and Wasp #1.

The regular cover is already sold out at Midtown.
Maybe there’s a surprise or new character introduction. Maybe it’s just the movie boosting sales (which would be surprising).

Hopefully Anthony can find us some spoilers to find out what’s going on with this book. Regardless of what happens, I’m hoping for a refreshing read before the new movie is released.

Indie Pick
Despite selling out online and likely hard to find with a small print run, I’m picking this since it’s a total take now on the human civilization, at least in the 1st world countries.

Yes, a new phone being released sends people into a frenzy. Sound familiar? Yes cause we humans are stupid and are slaves to our gadgets now.

My pick this week goes to Cellies #1 from Lion Forge.

I’m hoping this is a nice humorous take on our stupidity as humans and brings to light for some people they should put their phones down from time to time and enjoy life. There are more important things in life than stuff (except comics of course).

Small Publisher Pick
I really enjoyed Remender’s Death or Glory #1 so of course I’m going to pick up #2.

Remender rarely disappoints and with his other hit books still going strong like Black Science and Deadly Class (soon to be a show), we should not overlook these books.

This book has media deal or show written all over it from the start.

So if you missed out on the first issue, find a copy if you can and check it out.

Now on with the dreaded “avoid” pick, every writer and artist worst nightmare when it comes to selling their hard work.

You might of read about this in my things I like and don’t like but here it is again, because it’s just too easy to pick on.

Spawn #286 and it’s 8 different covers where the only difference is the coloring done by different artists. Sure some of them are great covers but is it really necessary? Don’t give into this obvious cash cow.

Maybe McFarlane is trying to boost sales before his new Spawn movie is just getting started with casting calls (you all read Jaime Fox was cast. I like Fox but I’m not sure how I feel about him as the leading role, it could be a easy hit or miss).

I don’t know about the rest of you all but can’t we obviously admit that the only remaining Spawn fans are the ones who originally bought and read Spawn back in the 90s? We’re all middle aged geeks now with kids who don’t care about Spawn and don’t have a clue as to who this McFarlane guy is.

That’s all for this week. On a side note, I’m going skydiving for the 3rd time in my life this coming Saturday so if you don’t see any articles from me next week, you all should have a good idea something went horribly wrong.

Also, I hope for the few who do actually read my garbage are paying attention. I’m hoping to have a really awesome contest but it really does require you all to pay attention to my articles. That’s all I’m saying for now.

  1. Oh and I read Death or Glory #2 already and I give it a two thumbs up. Such a great read. When an issue makes me want to know what happens in the next issue, that’s a great book.

  2. Luckily, Poyo, your name is not Helmt Schmuck (right?) … if it was (or is?), that could be an unfortunate foreshadowing for someone wanting to go skydiving … just sayin’.

  3. I went skydiving once, I was strapped to the instructor. I want to go again to do a dive by myself.

    1. Yeah, I’m tandem diving again. I think after the third tandem one can start the process of doing it alone. If tandem divers got paid more I’d totally do it as a weekend job.

    2. Ive been skydiving once, but I went static line. Thats to say that you jump solo but there is a tether on the chute pull to automatically pull the chute after you reach a certain distance away from the plane, as youre free falling. It is pretty intense when youre in a perfectly good plane flying along, with your feet hanging out the side, and you willingly jump out. Strange mix of highs and emotions. If I remember correctly, which I usually dont (cough, cough), I think my instructor said you can jump solo on your 4th jump. But Im in Canada. Im sure the rules vary between regions. I have also been bungee’n. It was only 120 ft from a crane over the Ottawa River, but, I was 25, I had been up for 40 hrs, I was probably 20-30 beers deep, high on nose candy, and the European guy who jumped right before me, pencil dove off the bungee crane. Feet first, lol. He got a serious case of whiplash when he hit his bottom dead centre. One of the funniest things I have ever witnessed in my adult life. I have my perfect swan dive, bungee jump with head dunking in the river, on VHS tape!

        1. One of my exes tandem jumped when she was in New Zealand. It was from ridiculous height like 24000 ft. or something like that. She free fell for 1 minute.

          1. From what I’ve read average altitude for jumps is 10-12k feet and you average a 40-60 second free fall. The highest jumps in U.S are at 18k feet but requires supplemental oxygen but one can get an 85 second free fall at this altitude. I dont think tandem dives anywhere in the world would goto 24k feet.

            1. I dont remember the height, but I remember the free fall time. 1 minute free fall just always stuck in my head. It seems insane to me.

              1. 13k feet one can usually get 1 minute free fall and it doesnt require oxygen. I was curious now and looking it up. πŸ™‚

              2. ^^^ I would totally do it…. 128k feet… 24 miles up… 4 minutes 20 second free fall…. Max speed 833 MPH….

  4. Back on topic, I’ve been buying spawn, flash, suicide squad and Deathstroke…just because of he mattina B covers.

  5. Poyo, you really ought to read “Deathstroke,” from the start of its run with, “Rebirth,” to today. Christopher Priest writes it and is an amazing enough creator he actually makes the character interesting.

  6. Good luck on Skydiving Poyo. It’s on my bucket list for sure. But I think I need to lose some weight first.
    Enjoy these posts every week.
