One Year Later: Spec Review for 6/7/17

What up CHUllectors!?! Shawn B. the One Year Later Investigator, back with another One Year Later round up, where we take a look at some of the comics that Anthony, Mel, and Poyo specced on one year ago. Their specs turn out to be quick flips, slow burns, straight up misses, straight up winners and on and on. Sometimes they spec with their hearts out of their passion for comics. Sometimes they spec based on data. And sometimes they spec based off the word on the street. Either way, all their specs appeal to a few or many collectors whether it is due to them having similar taste in writing or art, or just an opportunity for a collector to flip a book and make money to “support their habit”. So, this is our weekly chance to look back at how some of our buys from a year ago are doing today.
Winners

Batman #24 Regular Cover – Anthony Pick & Variant Tim Sale Cover – Mel Pick
Original Values: $3     Current Values: Regular $18 Variant $14
Pretty huge marriage in the DCU. Can’t wait til they have babies!

Darth Vader #1 – Poyo Pick
Original Value: $5     Current Value: $7
Not a huge win but my money says it will continue to slowly rise.
Future Potential

Darth Vader #1 Incentive Mark Brooks Homage Variant Cover – Mel & Anthony Pick
Original Value: $60     Current Value: $55
Most variants drop much lower in value a year later. I am sure most of us CHU Heads get our variants for cheaper than the original value. Money could have been and still could be made here.

Walking Dead #168 Variant Sina Grace Pride Month Cover – Anthony & Mel Pick (sort of)
Original Value: $3     Current Value: $5
I say sort of because they specced on this one but never said “this is the cover to get”. Weird one though. The bay sales average at $5 but you can get copies at online retailers for cover or below.
Misses

Street Fighter vs Darkstalkers #2 Incentive Warren Louw Guest Artist Variant Cover – Mel Pick
Original Value: $30     Current Value: $16
No quick flip data here unfortunately. Based of the success of #1’s Artgerm variant I would imagine there was some potential.

Pestilence #2 – Anthony & Poyo Pick
Original Value: $4     Current Value: $4 or less
Didn’t quite pick up the expected steam but with the new series starting who knows what the future holds.

Heathen #4 Incentive Natasha Alterici Variant Cover – Anthony Pick
Original Value: $7     Current Value: $6
No quick flip data again. Later issue variants a year later? Not usually huge.

Babyteeth #1 – Anthony Pick
Original Value: $4     Current Value: $4
Not sure if this one ever lived up to all the hype!
Unspecced Winners

Failsafe #2
Original Value: $4     Current Value: $20
Tough to predict the option happening a year ago.

Injustice 2 #3
Original Value: $3     Current Value: $6
First appearance of Athanasia al Ghul?

  1. I was enjoying Babyteeth but decided to drop it when Cates started at Marvel. I was cutting back titles and it just didnt make the cut.

      1. I dropped it after issue 3 or 4. Was just gonna wait to buy it in trade if and when I do get around to reading it.

  2. i know #2’s are often way lower print runs but why is this one more valuable than #1, especially with a movie deal?

    1. Demand + Availabilty = Value
Failsafe #1 had already a small print run but #2 got even smaller. So what were likely seeing with #2 is just demand from buyers scrambling to find and buy after the media option. #1 is likely easier to find and obtain than #2.

      1. That equation makes sense but i dont understand the high demand for #2’s in general, even when they’re scarce. For me personally, significance of an issue is much more important that scarcity.

        1. So even if the demand is slightly smaller than those seeking #1 issues, the slight demand for #2 in which it’s even harder to find mixed with the available for sale = higher value.
That’s why in any equation, it all boils down to demand. Demand drives the value. Then you have to factor in availability (which consists of print run and number for sale).
One has to realize this also is fairly new with just a handful of issues out, so one could likely make the case that the demand is higher on #2 since there’s likely collectors and readers who are seeking these out as they’re completists and just generally want to read.

  3. Injustice #2 and #3 have been picking up steam! Injustice #2 because of the 1st App of the New Suicide Squad and #3 because as you mentioned it’s the 1st App of Anathasia Al Ghul… daughter of Talia Al Ghul and Batman.
Anathasia also makes Damian her bit#&.
Lot’s of potential with this character me thinks!

    1. The only problem with her gaining traction is the fact that this story is not part of the main DC universe. There’s a really good chance we never see or hear about her again after this. I made sure I got it just in case, but I don’t really expect anything more than what it currently is.

    1. Also I think some shops went light on these or didn’t buy them at all. I can imagine there’s plenty of shop owners who aren’t into the whole “pride” thing. So a little harder to come by.. hehe.. harder.. come.. does that make me gay? Shhh.. don’t tell my wife! 🙂

      1. They didn’t really move either. The shops near me that ordered them have been sitting on stacks of them that didn’t sell. There are Soo many of these out in the wild for cover I don’t know why people are buying them above on eBay.

        1. Probably depends on area as well. I recall my shops went light on them and sold out pretty quickly. Honestly I think the cover isn’t all that great.

  4. I got a couple on this list, including about 3 or 4 Batman #24 newsstands. I really wanted that Brooks Vader, but never got one.
