Poyo’s Spec and Drek for June 27th, 2018

Silk is heading to the big screen. Kirkman is still milking the cash cow. Liefeld is being Liefeld. What can we expect this week on the comic speculation market?

There’s a few clear winners and then there are readers for this week.

DC/Vertigo Pick
Hands down, possible Batgirl #23 Cover B potential is this weeks DC winner and yet again, it’s another Middleton Cover B.

This weeks pick is Batgirl #24 Cover B.

I like this one better than #23. Did retailers catch on and make this one easier to obtain or did they all fall asleep again and we’re looking at another easy $20 book before it even hits the local shop shelves? I guess we’ll find out.

Already selling out online at most retailers, grab it if you see it.

There’s also that Teen Titan’s Special #1 that introduces a new character. I know the hype is building on this character already within the DC fan base but I just don’t get it. I’m not a Lobo fan so I doubt I’m going to be a fan of his daughter. Just feels like she’s a mashup of a gothic punk rock Harley Quinn.

Marvel Pick
I mentioned Venom #3 in my Likes and Dislikes (grab a copy or two, don’t pass it up since Cates is on fire with his writing and new characters he’s introducing) but the other winner this week is Ms. Marvel #31 Stephanie Hans Cover B.

Already sold out online at most retailers, this one will be a book every Ms. Marvel fan will want to collect to tuck away into their personal collections.

Grab two copies if you’re a fan, tuck one in the personal collection. Sell the other. If you’re not a fan, grab a copy to flip but leave the others for the fan boys/girls so they get a chance at their copy without paying secondary market prices.

Indie Pick
Can’t say enough about this series. It fills my void of zombies for sure since I’m now done with the Walking Dead.

This weeks pick goes to Pestilence A Story of Satan #2.

This is a great original story about the plague back in the dark ages. Issue 1 was almost near non-existent in my neck of the woods, I’m expecting issue #2 will be as well or perhaps a bit harder to find.
I’m not expecting this book to heat up or be a quick flip but this book has media deal all over it. I think it would make a great show. So grab it, read it, hold. These would be worthy if and when that media deal occurs.

Small Publisher Pick
The small publisher pick goes to The Sixth Gun creators new series, set in a world of the remains from The Sixth Gun, Shadow Roads #1 is out from Oni Press this week.

Already selling out online, I’m expecting a smaller print run on these but we won’t know until Wednesday.

Cullen Bunn is a great writer. His work is not to be overlooked. But I do feel he’s taking too many titles under his belt at once, seems like a new book of his comes out on a weekly basis. Maybe he’s just a robot writing machine.

Hopefully all this weight doesn’t weigh these new titles down. It’s still definitely worthy of checking out, especially for all you Sixth Gun fans. I’m predicting more of a reader than flipper though.

Now on with the dreaded “avoid” pick, every writer and artist worst nightmare when it comes to selling their hard work.

Bloodstrike #23 and it’s 4 covers. There’s really no reason to have 4 different covers for a book that has nothing special about it. Do people even read this? Pouchman might be a good laugh but don’t expect it to carry this as a potential winner, short term or long term.

I know he’s not writing or drawing this new Bloodstrike series but he created this series so..   yeah, that’s my avoid this week. Sorry Michael Fiffe, but you should have known what you were getting into reviving a crappy 90s comic book.

  1. I have to agree with you on Bloodstrike.
I really hope reviving 90s era Image crap doesn’t become a thing. I know they’re really trying to force it, but we have to fight back.

    1. Yeah, some things are meant to be revived from the past. Others not so much. Bloodstrike is one of those things as is a majority of the Image titles from the 90s.

    1. I didn’t even pre-order to be honest. If I see some tomorrow I’ll grab one or two but for me, I don’t care if I miss out on these. For some reason I’m just don’t have that gut feeling this character will stay hot. Maybe over time but I think a lot of this is just pre-hype that is making everyone scramble for this new character in hopes to cash out..
