Rumor: Riri Williams Could Be Coming to the Marvel Cinematic Universe

Riri Williams, who took over for Tony Stark as Iron Man, now known as Iron Heart, could be coming to the Marvel Cinematic Universe if rumors are true. Riri, who had her first full appearance in Iron Man #9 (Vol. 2) , was a spec hit for a while.

The rumor started over at the Hashtag Show and CBR picked up on it.

From Hashtag Show

The Black List is an online script marketplace that allows writers the opportunity to have their scripts seen by studios, giving up an comers some exposure they might not otherwise get. Recently, Marvel Studios hired a pair of Black List writers in Matthew and Ryan Firpo to develop a script for their upcoming Eternals project. Now, it seems that a script for one of their legacy characters has made its way to the Black List and has been well-received.

According to a tweet from The Black List, screenwriter Jada Rodriguez developed a script for the Marvel property Ironheart.

From CBR.com:

While Marvel fans are still reeling after the events of Avengers: Infinity War and awaiting the game-changing events of Avengers 4, a new rumor may indicate a whole lot about what kind of changes are coming in Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe: an Ironheart movie is reportedly in development:

The Hashtag Show has added that the script appearing on The Black List (a list of Hollywood’s most popular unmade screenplays) could be a sign that she was indeed commissioned by Marvel to write an exploratory draft. There’s no comment from Marvel Studios yet, so this is just a developing rumor at the moment.

Ironheart, aka Riri Williams, is a successor to Tony Stark / Iron Man in recent Marvel Comics runs. She was created by comic book maestro Brian Michael Bendis, as a young teenage prodigy who is manages to reverse-engineer the Iron Man armor tech all by herself, while studying at MIT. While doing some moonlighting int he armor, she’s eventually discovered by Pepper Potts and Tony Stark, who endorse and help support her on the road to becoming a superhero. Tony sends Riri an A.I. version of his consciousness, which serves as her mentor and allows her to build her own new armor, becoming the hero “Ironheart.”

This movie would make a lot of sense for Marvel Studios, as it enters a vastly different Phase 4 landscape of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. As we’ve previously discussed, an Avengers 4 time jump may find Tony in a very different place as an “eye-in-the-sky” kind of world defender, as well as a father to he and Pepper’s child. Whether Tony dies during, or survives Avengers 4, it may be time for him to hang up his Iron Man title, instead following the comics by becoming head of SHIELD, or some other supervisor role. That would clear the lane for this rumored Ironheart film to actually be the Iron Man franchise release for MCU Phase 4, with room for Downey to cameo (read: get paid for vocal/facial performance ) as the Tony Stark A.I., and return in the flesh for key big MCU events or cameos. For his part, Downey has already publicly stated that he’s behind the idea of Riri taking over.

  1. After the big hype a couple of years ago where this book skyrocketed in price it has since gone went down in price a bit, but was still roughly a $20 book for the regular cover. So, not a cheapo, dollar bin find at all. Prices have already doubled for the regular cover and the 1:25. As far as possible spec? I don’t know, the third print does have Riri on the front cover. Not sure of the print run on it, but if low enough it could be a good one to get “if” they do decide to introduce her into the Cinematic U. The third print is also dirt cheap.

  2. I was talking about this with someone recently about Tony Stark possibly dying next movie and passing the mantle and I said Riri and my friend said it should be Shuri because she already uses similar blasters and is smart enough to keep up the suits and she could easily be nicknamed Riri since her name ends with ri.

    1. Also in the same conversation he mentioned Hawkeye will be the main lead character of the next Avengers movie because he believes cap and Tony will die.

    2. I could actually get behind this idea. It would make more sense than pulling a character out of the blue to succeed Tony Stark, and Shuri has already proven herself to be a likable and intelligent character. Of course, her experience could also be a reason not to use her; since they’d want someone who’s new to the action, who’s never been in a super-heroic fight before to be the new lead for the next generation of fans. Hard to believe it’s already been a whole decade of the MCU!

  3. #7 her cameo is doing better then #9 I don’t think there is a 1:25 for either there’s woman of Power for #7 and age of apocalypse for #9 if I remember they were both open order.

    1. I think you’re right on all these postings Alana. The 1:25’s only came into play later than the key books. As to the cinematic goings on, you seem to have some great sources….you’ve been well ahead of the curve on these. Riri or Shuri? Market already loves Shuri and doesn’t know Riri. Disney will surely introduce Riri, but is smart enough to bank on the sure thing.

  4. Nope. It was an “all you can order” book….but who in their right mind would have ordered multiples of this awful title with an even worse cover? This is why the values will climb on this book….not because anyone loves the art, but because small amounts of retailers ordered this awful cover.
