One Year Later: Spec Review for 7/19/17

What up CHUllectors!?! Shawn B. the One Year Later Investigator, back with another One Year Later round up, where we take a look at some of the comics that Anthony, Mel, and Poyo specced on one year ago. Their specs turn out to be quick flips, slow burns, straight up misses, straight up winners and on and on. Sometimes they spec with their hearts out of their passion for comics. Sometimes they spec based on data. And sometimes they spec based off the word on the street. Either way, all their specs appeal to a few or many collectors whether it is due to them having similar taste in writing or art, or just an opportunity for a collector to flip a book and make money to “support their habit”. So, this is our weekly chance to look back at how some of our buys from a year ago are doing today.

Winners

Aquaman #26 Variant Joshua Middleton Cover – Anthony & Mel Pick
Original Value: $4           Current Value: $10
One of Middleton’s earlier Killer B Covers. Depending on how you look at it, he may be the hottest cover artist of 2018.

Harley Quinn #24 Variant Frank Cho Cover – Anthony Pick
Original Value: $3           Current Value: $7
It’s the CHOOOO train! Connecting cover with #25. Sets are selling for $15-20. It figures that I jumped off the Cho train at issue #23.

Totally Awesome Hulk #21 Cover A 1st Ptg (Weapons Of Mutant Destruction Part 4)
Totally Awesome Hulk #21 – Anthony Pick
Original Value: $4           Current Value: $13
Weapon H cameo. We all know what came next!

Quick Flip Winners

Trump Vs. Time Lincoln #1 – Anthony Pick
Original Value: $4           Quick Flip Value: $10           Current Value: $4-7
Sold copies average at $7 on the bay while mycomicshop.com has copies for cover price.

Misses

Archie #22 – Anthony & Poyo Pick and Mel Pick on Cover C
Original Value: $4           Current Value: $4
Don’t believe the hype! Betty was walking 5 issues later. There may have been some quick flip potential here (which was the recommendation a year ago) but I do not have the data. I do know if there was any it lasted only a short while.

X-Files #16 Variant Tom Whalen Cover – Mel Pick
Original Value: $4           Current Value: $4
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Universe #12 Variant Tom Whalen Cover – Mel Pick
Original Value: $5           Current Value: $5
I know these Whalen variants were usually sold out (not anymore),  but I don’t think any of them that I know of really took off.

Unspecced Winners

Ducktales #0 Marco Ghiglione Design Variant Cover
Original Value: $12           Current Value: $100
While, Anthony and Poyo did mention Ducktales in their specs, neither specifically called out the variant. I haven’t totally dug in yet but has anyone else noticed that these Disney blue print design variants seem to have some heat?

  1. I has a DT 1:10 that I picked up for cover on release day. It sat on my ebay page for a few months, then sold about 2 weeks or so before it blew up. Win some, lose some.

      1. Yes and I’m just surprised since I kind of stopped spec’ing on Archie books, this one might of been the last.
