One Year Later: Spec Review for 8/2/17

What up CHUllectors!?! Shawn B. the One Year Later Investigator, back with another One Year Later round up, where we take a look at some of the comics that Anthony, Mel, and Poyo specced on one year ago. Their specs turn out to be quick flips, slow burns, straight up misses, straight up winners and on and on. Sometimes they spec with their hearts out of their passion for comics. Sometimes they spec based on data. And sometimes they spec based off the word on the street. Either way, all their specs appeal to a few or many collectors whether it is due to them having similar taste in writing or art, or just an opportunity for a collector to flip a book and make money to “support their habit”. So, this is our weekly chance to look back at how some of our buys from a year ago are doing today.

    1. And that’s so weird because I only ever hear people say good things about them. I thought the TMNT covers were terrific but maybe doing some more mainstream titles would help?

      1. Yeah, these were limited to just IDW titles, which are pretty limited themselves. I bet these would have gotten more recognition if he did them for DC or Marvel.

    2. These Whalen books are nice, but I think if they were virgin covers they would’ve done better. Looks like they need a frame instead of a read.

  1. I got everyone on this list except for the Robotech and the True Believers. Am I going to have to start pre-ordering copies of all the True Believers ? I had no idea the Mech Cadet Yu was going for so much, I’m going to have to get the rest of the series.

  2. Prices seem to be all over the place on that True Believers Black Panther when I check the sold listings..some as low as $3.99 plus shipping, others near $20.

  3. I found that the success of the BP movie did not translate well into comic sales for me. Im thinking some of the higher ‘sold’ listings for that TB BP book may be schillings.

      1. Remember when Black Panther #1 was a $5 book not that long ago… Jungle action #5, and #6 as well as FF#52 saw a nice pop.

    1. Could be schillings but could also be the not so informed people who arent aware that these are reprints of the classics. Yes, they walk amongst us.

      1. Regardless if it is schill purchases or dummy buys, those $20 sales are not reflective, at all, of the secondary value of that book.

        1. I agree but unless someone comes up with facts that say otherwise…. All we have are assumptions of why or how they sold for $20.

          1. Agreed, Poyo. I did not state my theory as fact, but did state it as opinion and pure speculation, but grounded in reasonable logic, I think.

      1. I didnt say it was. I simply stated that the success of the movie did not translate into sales, for me. I watched BP about a month ago for the 1st time, and it is near the bottom of my MCU list. I didnt like it very much.

      2. My comment wasn’t directed at you in that kind of context Jay. Just a blanket statement to the masses. BP was a great movie outside of the MCU, but in the chain it’s just a link. I didn’t spec on BP because their simply isn’t anything to spec.

    1. No worries. I was just clarifying myself. All good.
Agreed about BP spec. Mind you, Shuri’s 1st would have been nice to spec on. I missed that one.

  5. Justice league rebirth 26 Cover B is doing better than cover A. I have a nice hoard of both covers lol
