One Year Later: Spec Review for 8/9/17

What up CHUllectors!?! Shawn B. the One Year Later Investigator, back with another One Year Later round up, where we take a look at some of the comics that Anthony, Mel, and Poyo specced on one year ago. Their specs turn out to be quick flips, slow burns, straight up misses, straight up winners and on and on. Sometimes they spec with their hearts out of their passion for comics. Sometimes they spec based on data. And sometimes they spec based off the word on the street. Either way, all their specs appeal to a few or many collectors whether it is due to them having similar taste in writing or art, or just an opportunity for a collector to flip a book and make money to “support their habit”. So, this is our weekly chance to look back at how some of our buys from a year ago are doing today.

Just got back from vacation. Man I love the beach. I was in a small town in the North East and found a comic shop. They were more gaming oriented which worked out for me.

  1. Holy moly.. two weeks in a row I picked winners.

I almost picked Mister Miracle last year as my top DC pick but since I try to limit them to just one per publisher for the big 2… I went with Artgerm. To date I still think that’s one of his best Killer B for Supergirl.

    1. If I had a copy I would sell. In a few weeks or months, it will be worth cover price or slightly over when people forget about it or the hype dies as those willing to pay got their copies.

    2. I sold both my copies of Riptide last night. Both sold within 15 minutes of posting, went for around $22-25 range. I couldn’t find any NM’s. What I sold were VFNM. It was a great flip. Wish I had more.

    3. If I had just one, I would consider holding. Red 5 comics has an extremely low print run and one of their last minis, The Rift, got a media deal and issue #1 of that can fetch $30-$35 right now. I would say there is a decent chance of Riptide having the same fate as The Rift. Mind you, if you can get $25 now, thats not a bad idea either. Roll it over every week, successfully, and youll bring home way more than selling upon news of a potential media deal in 1-2-3…years.

      1. Or….. Sell now, make profit. Wait for prices to drop, buy cheap…. Hold and gamble on media deal. 😉

      2. And actually, Rift is back now as a $10 book or so and dropping. My last sold listing was for $10.50 and it was an auction. I’m happy though, I sold 2 at $28 each. 1 at $22 (auction), another auction at $10.50 and my last BIN for $13.99. I had a few other damaged books sell too, one for $10 and another for a whopping $1. The damaged books were Midtown books that got damaged that they replaced for free. So I’m sitting pretty on the profit margin for Rift sales. 🙂

      3. Thank you both for answering. I will probably flip. If this were a marvel or DC I may have kept. Not a lot of history of a small press book holding value.

  2. I have a harley 24 & 25 set sitting pretty in my PC. The entire edge of venomverse set and supergirl artgerm covers. This post is just good news

  3. Great list, yet another list that I had almost every comic. I had no idea Mister Miracle was going for so much. Tom King should only do 12 issue series for characters, not mainstream characters but B level ones. Too bad he left Marvel because I would love to see what he would do with Sentry.

  4. I preordered 6 of each cover on Mister Miracle, first time ever ordered multiples. His God of Light story and previews convinced me.

I know I am bragging but it is literally the once good choice Ive made that will pay for all my bad ones, so its really a wash. Fun wash though.

    1. We all brag when we get a win in this crazy game. Its part of the fun and they can be few and far between. Good on you.
